11月中頃から咲き出したリュウキュウツチトリモチの開花が最盛期を迎えています。例年より少し早めです。

久しぶりに夜の森を見回ってきました。強い北風が吹いて強風注意報が出ている石垣島でしたが、リュウキュウコノハズク、リュウキュウアオバズク、ゴイサギなど夜行性の鳥が見られました。

昨年のサカツラガン4羽 も多かったのですが、ことしはサカツラガン過去最多数の5羽で飛来しました。
近くに沖縄では珍鳥なマガモのオスもいたのですが、警戒心が強くて写真は撮れず。
今季初のホシハジロは1羽で飛来。オナガガモと行動を共にしていました。
クロツラヘラサギは島内の複数箇所に何羽か散らばって越冬中。

たまには時間を気にせず鳥を見たいのですが、きょうも仕事の移動中に田んぼで少しだけバードウオッチング。
今季初ではないですが、2カ月ぶりのソリハシセイタカシギが登場。警戒心のない個体ですが、強風が吹き付けるので撮りにくかったー。
田んぼのオニアジサシは、少しだけ場所を変えて休んでいました。どうも餌場はダムっぽいです。
強風と雨の中、ミサゴが畔で食事をしていました。草が茂って何を食っているのかは不明。
今まで知らなかった沈砂池を発見したのでのぞいてみるとキンクロハジロやハシビロガモ、コガモ、カワウなどがいました。石垣島内では大きめの沈砂池なので今後、何か入るかもしれません。
稲刈りが終わった田んぼではオナガガモの幼鳥たちがカルガモと採餌していました。カルガモについて回っていました。安心するのでしょうか。
シギ、チドリはアカアシシギやアオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、クサシギ、タシギ、タゲリ、コチドリ、シロチドリ、メダイチドリなどが越冬中。
今季はユリカモメとの出会いが多く、ここ数日で4羽を観察。漁港にはウミネコらしきもいたそうですが、私は見られず…。
ムネアカタヒバリやハクセキレイ、キセキレイ、ツメナガセキレイたちは激しい北風が吹き付けるので草陰なでに避難している個体が多かったです。

昨日のソリハシセイタカシギ に加えて新たに3羽が田んぼに飛来しました。
現在、石垣島には2カ所合わせて4羽のソリハシセイタカシギが滞在中です。

きょうはサカツラガンなどを見たいというお客人を連れての短時間鳥見。
先月から石垣島の田んぼで越冬中のオオカワラヒワ2羽。警戒心がめちゃくちゃ強く、やっとまともな写真が撮れました。と言っても、63メートル先の15センチ程度の小鳥なので超トリミングしてます。^^; 長逗留中ですので、もう少し近くで撮りたいですね。
これで最近、独立種という研究が発表されたオガサワラカワラヒワ( 論文 )と亜種オオカワラヒワ、亜種カワラヒワを撮影できました。あとは亜種チョウセンカワラヒワを撮るだけ。

ハクセキレイの群れが入っているというので変なのいないかなと見に行ってみたら、いい感じに分かりにくいのがいくらか交じっていました。^^
今季はハクセキレイよりもホオジロハクセキレイが多いのですが、さらにその中にシベリアハクセキレイみたいな個体とか、一瞬、タイワンハクセキレイかと思うようなあやしげな個体もいます。
ほとんど第1回冬羽なのでなかなか決定打がないのですが、いろいろ検討するのもこの時季のハクセキレイの楽しみの一つですね。^^^
The bill looks thick, but the face is White Wagtail (ssp. ocularis/leucopsis type), and the body is White Wagtail — a puzzling individual.
At first glance a White Wagtail, but the apron-shaped black breast patch looks like a White-faced Wagtail.
Something feels off, but it's too much trouble, so: White-faced Wagtail. ^^;
Hmm. Same as above — another borderline individual. Going with White-faced Wagtail for now… ^^;

カンムリワシが大きなオオヒキガエルと格闘していました。最大クラスの個体だったので体重は数百グラムはあるはずです。
カンムリワシは両足でしっかりと押さえつけるのですが、力の強いオオヒキガエルは体重800グラム程度のカンムリワシを乗せたまま移動。カンムリワシは何度も足でつかみ直すのでオオヒキガエルの目は鋭い爪でつぶれてしまいました。
カンムリワシは大きなオオヒキガエルを捕まえるとひっくり返して毒腺を避けるようにはらわたから食うのですが、この時はカンムリワシとともに三面張りの水路に落ちて見えなくなってしまいました。

幼鳥のころから石垣島で越冬している暗色型の通称ブラックサシバ は3年目の越冬も順調です。毎年、11月の下旬にやってきて同じ場所で越冬し、3月ごろまで滞在して私たちを楽しませてくれます。
雨が降ったり止んだりの中、カンムリワシは幼鳥、成鳥とも出会えました。
渡ってきたばかりの先月は近くで撮れた のですが、きょうは遠かったー。
ツグミやハチジョウツグミ、シロハラ、アカハラも増えていますが、警戒心が強くてどれも遠い。
シマアカモズは越冬組が農地のあちこちでみられます。成鳥のオスもいますが、幼鳥が圧倒的に多いです。
越冬カワウはダムに多くいるのですが、どれも遠い。そんな中、沈砂池で休む群れを発見。翼を広げて乾かしながらくつろいでいました。

Around 40 Great Cormorants had gathered at a small settling pond. I searched for Pelagic Cormorant, which is rare in Okinawa, but found none.
今季初となるヤツガシラが飛来しました。石垣島ナンバーワン野鳥ガイドの スポッター さんに教えてもらいました。
仕事中、そろそろランチに行こうかと思っていたらメールが飛んできて「ヤツガシラがいるぞ」と。あわてて駆けつけて、ヤツガシラを見ることができました。
ヤツガシラはこれまで何羽見たか分からないくらい見ていますが、それでも初物はいいですねー。^^

オオカワラヒワ2羽は11月から滞在中。ハクセキレイやムネアカタヒバリの群れと行動を共にしていますが、ハクセキレイによくいじめられていました。
このオオカワラヒワは警戒心がめちゃくちゃ強く、撮影が困難で 1週間ほど前に撮影 したときは60メートル以上離れていました。きょうは風雨が強く風を避けた鳥たちが集まる場所が決まっていたので、そこでしばらく待ってみると比較的近くまでやってきてくれました。

ハクセキレイ数十羽のうち、3分の1ほどがホオジロハクセキレイでした。その中にタイワンハクセキレイが2羽。ツメナガセキレイやキセキレイ、ムネアカタヒバリ、ヒバリなども合わせて相当数が群れを形成しています。日々、増減があるので入れ替わりもあるようです。

12月2日に現れたサカツラガン5羽 は相変わらず警戒心がなく田んぼに滞在中です。島内の田んぼを移動しているようです。
ことし生まれのズグロミゾゴイたちは、どの個体も換羽が始まっています。
クロツラヘラサギは島内複数箇所に数羽が滞在中。クロツラヘラサギのすぐそばにはムラサキサギとカンムリワシがいました。ムラサキサギとカンムリワシはこの季節、どこの田んぼにもいます。

石垣島の田んぼではソリハシシギが2カ所で3羽のほかアカアシシギやアオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、クサシギ、ハマシギ、タシギなどが越冬中。

Watching from close range, I could hear the sound of the bill slicing through the water — "jyak, jyak."

ことしは石垣島のベニバトは当たり年のようで秋からこれまでに20羽以上を撮影しています。条件が悪かったり、飛ばれたりして撮影していない個体を合わせたらいったい何羽見たのだろうか。^^;
今回の3羽はどれもことし生まれなのですが、第1回冬羽にほとんど変わっていました。
ツグミ、シロハラ、アカハラもいましたが、警戒心が強く、ツグミ以外は写真に撮れず…。^^;
石垣島BIRD観察さんにツメナガホオジロ、ヤツガシラ、イカル情報をもらいましたが、時間切れで見られず…。^^;

今季2度目の出会いとなったツメナガホオジロ。前回、10月下旬の個体はメスの成鳥でしたが、今回はオスの成鳥でした。今年の10月ごろは、石垣島のほかに沖縄本島や与那国島、粟国島とツメナガホオジロがよく現れます。環境も良く、ムネアカタヒバリやツメナガセキレイなど越冬組も多くいるのでツメナガホオジロもこのまま越冬する可能性が高いですね。
シベリアアオジは昨年の春にメスを撮影して以来です。ご多分にもれず、この仲間は草むらによく潜るので撮影するのに難儀しますね。シベリアアオジは単独でいましたが今のところ滞在2日目です。
オオカワラヒワも相変わらず警戒心が強いですが、しばらくの石垣島逗留を決めたようです。
アカハラは今季初撮影。ツグミ、アカハラ、シロハラは渡ってきてまもない個体が多く、まだまだ警戒心が解けないです。
大量に滞在中のムネアカタヒバリは警戒心が多少緩んできました。わずかにタヒバリも交じっているのですがこの日はチョウゲンボウが3個体もうろうろして驚いて群れが飛ぶたびにシャッフルされてツメナガホオジロを見失うのでタヒバリ属には時間を割けず…。^^;

Food is plentiful, and there are also large numbers of Red-throated Pipits and Eastern Yellow Wagtails, so it should be able to winter here without any trouble.
The Lapland Longspur and the birds around it were very wary, but by settling in to wait, they eventually came right up in front of me.
You can see the jet-black, elongated hind claw — one of the hallmarks of the Lapland Longspur.

A Black-faced Bunting was also picking up grass seeds.
It called occasionally with a sharp 'chit, chit' as it repeatedly moved in and out of the grass along the paddy bank.
Two Grey-capped Greenfinches are also getting through the winter without trouble.
A Pale Thrush that has been showing up since the end of last month. An adult female. While most individuals are quite wary, this one was relatively calm.

今季初のニュウナイスズメをスズメの群れの中に確認。飛び立ってシャッフルされるたびにニュウナイスズメの姿を見失いました…。^^ 狙って見つけたとはいえ、石垣島ではニュウナイスズメの飛来が少ないので嬉しいですね。
長期滞在のサカツラガンはほぼ同じ場所に滞在中。
今季は少なくて心配していたギンムクドリはここにきて増えてきました。市街地のアカギやガジュマルなどの実を食っています。ムクドリやカラムクドリ、インドハッカなどと群れたり離れたりで公園や図書館、市民会館あたりを巡回しているようです。
田んぼにではタシギが一か所に固まっています。石垣島では、ほかにもアカアシシギを中心に数種類のシギたちが越冬中です。

Common Snipe, juvenile. Most of the other individuals were also juveniles.
A White-shouldered Starling feeding on Ryukyu tallow tree seeds. The reddish base of the bill is probably stained from eating strangler fig fruit.
On Ishigaki Island the White Cheeked Starling is a winter visitor. On the Okinawa mainland it also breeds near the airport.
西表島へ日帰り出張。大原港に近い沈砂池をのぞいてみるとソリハシセイタカシギやセイタカシギ、コガモ、オオバンなどがいました。
ナベコウは石垣島と西表島を行き来しているので、少しだけ探しましたが見つかりません。その翌日、妻が石垣島でホテルグランヴィリオ上空を西方の海上へ飛び去る姿を確認。ナベコウは私と入れ違いで再び西表島へ渡ったようです。

石垣島に久しぶりのオオノスリ参上。オオバンを食っていました。
家族でドライブしていたら石垣島BIRD観察さんからオオノスリがいるぞと連絡が入り、ちょうどすぐ近くを走っていたので急行。念願のオオノスリをなんとか写真に収めることができました。カメラは常にもっておくもんですね。^^
ことしの石垣島は 愛想のいいチュウヒ や チョウセンチョウゲンボウ が越冬したりと猛禽類が当たり年です。

今季、2羽目と3羽目となるアサクラサンショウクイが現れました。11月に出たアサクラサンショウクイは連絡もらったのに仕事で行けず。今回も仕事中の連絡だったのですが、その翌日、首尾よく2羽とも撮影することができました。
警戒心もなく余裕の撮影なのですが、強風と小雨で画質はいまいち。越冬しそうな雰囲気なので撮り直したいですね。
宮古島などでも出ていて石垣島では2カ所3羽とアサクラサンショウクイの多い年です。

アカハラの群れが雨の中、水浴びしていました。近くではシロハラも水浴び。アカハラの水浴びを見ているとウグイスも出てきました。

A Japanese Bush Warbler that always stays hidden and only calls finally came out into the open. Perhaps the rain had made it less wary.

家族でドライブ中、右足を骨折したズグロミゾゴイを発見。捕獲を試みましがた飛び回って捕まえられませんでした。地面で採餌する鳥なのでこのまま生きながらえてくれることでしょう。

天気の悪い日が続く石垣島です。鳥たちも島内では移動があるのですが、新たに何か入ってきそうな気配はないですねー。^^;
近所の河口と田んぼを少し回ってきましたが、ほとんどいつものメンバーでした。
オニアジサシは越冬モードなのですが、河口と田んぼを行ったり来たりしているようです。河口にはダイゼンが増えてきました。ムナグロも少々。ミユビシギは2羽が越冬モードです。メダイチドリとオオメダイチドリは日によっていたりいなかったり。ユリカモメは3羽ほどが島内をぐるぐるしています。

林道ではカンムリワシがカエルやカメが出てくるのを待ち構えていました。
海岸にはハヤブサが待機。獲物がやってくるのを待っていました。

11月から滞在のチョウセンチョウゲンボウ を久しぶりに観察。一瞬の出会いでした。チョウゲンボウは島のあちこちで越冬中。
シマアカモズも農耕地に行けば会えるのですが、きょうは警戒心の弱いオスがいました。

アカガシラサギはまだ石垣島に残っていたようで牧場で牛に囲まれながら採餌していました。
サカツラガンも12月2日に現れて以来、場所をほとんど変えずに越冬中。サカツラガンとは別にマガン、ヒシクイ、オオヒシクイからなる群れがいるのですが、そちらとは合流しないようです。
田んぼにはムラサキサギやアカアシシギ、セイタカシギ、アオアシシギ、クサシギ、タシギ、コチドリ、ケリなどが越冬中です。

雨上がり、カンムリワシの成鳥6羽と幼鳥3羽に出会えました。
カニを食っているカンムリワシがいたので飛びたちを狙ってみました。SONYのα9iiはやっぱすごいわ。そして200-600mmのレンズも素晴らしい。顔にピントが来たら放さず近距離のピントがシビアな状況でも余裕で追います。
しかもCanonからSONYに乗り換えてからは三脚を使わず手持ちでの撮影。軽いは正義ですね。^^
カンムリワシ幼鳥は3羽と遭遇。今季の幼鳥はこれで13羽目とカンムリワシ幼鳥の戸籍係の石垣島BIRD観察さんに教えてもらいました。^^

The combination of Sony α9 II and EF 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS keeps focus locked on the face even at this close a distance — where no cropping gives you this frame size. Mirrorless also helps because the wider focus area means autofocus works even at the edges of the frame.
Crop from the photo above. AF tracking performance matters, but if the lens isn't fast to focus you simply can't keep up with birds in flight at this distance. Sony is impressive for the price.

先日のチョウセンチョウゲンボウの写真 があまりにもひどかったので撮り直してきました。警戒心もなく観察しやすい個体です。チョウセンチョウゲンボウは完全に越冬モードなので来春までは見られそうです。
ヒシクイ、オオヒシクイ、マガンの群れは9羽まで増えました。最初は 10月にマガン1羽 、 11月にヒシクイ4羽 、いつの間にかオオヒシクイが3羽合流してしばらく8羽でいたのですが、つい数日前にさらにヒシクイが1羽追加され、現在は9羽の群れで越冬中。石垣島でこの数は初記録と思われます。西表島では過去にコハクチョウ9羽の記録があります。
サシバは沖縄本島に比べると少ないですが、それでも安定して越冬個体が見られます。
ツグミも日に日に数を増やしています。ことしはハチジョウツグミは少ないですが、石垣島では年によってはツグミが少なく、ハチジョウツグミだらけのこともあります。
ことし生まれのリュウキュウヨシゴイは換羽が進んでいました。

A flock of Tundra Bean Geese, Taiga Bean Geese, and Greater White-fronted Geese — up to nine birds in total. I wonder why they haven't joined the Bar-headed Goose that has been wintering here. Last year there was a brief moment when a Bar-headed Goose and Bean Geese did come together, but the Bean Geese were so wary they soon split off again.
They seemed to have settled on this paddy field as their roost for the night. Extremely wary — there was absolutely no getting any closer than this.

昨年、12月に石垣島初記録として確認したハジロカイツブリ が今年も飛来しました。今回で石垣島2例目です。前回は1日で行方不明になりましたが、今回の個体は安定して見られそうです。
ケリも沖縄では珍しく、今季は長いこと滞在しています。 10月に同所で撮影した個体 と同じかもしれません。春までいて夏羽を拝みたいところです。
カンムリワシの幼鳥も縄張りが安定してきて複数個体がほぼ毎日見られます。
池のカモ類はハシビロガモとコガモ、カルガモを筆頭に、ヒドリガモやキンクロハジロなどが見られます。メジロガモも飛来していますが、きょうは見つけられませんでした。
石垣島発記録となるキバラガラが12月24日に確認されました。今季は九州や関東などでも出ています。年々キバラガラの情報は聞くようになりました。分布を広げているのでしょうか?
