While driving through farmland I spotted an orange-coloured bird. Through binoculars it turned out to be a strikingly bright Naumann's Thrush. Eight Olive-backed Pipits came into the garden — a flock that has been wintering in the village. They have grown considerably more accustomed to people over the course of the winter.

White Wagtails and Eastern Yellow Wagtails, apparently moving through, can be seen on a day-by-day basis.

Oriental Greenfinch, scarce on Ishigaki Island, is staying on and feeding in unharvested rice.

The new year got off to a rough start — the entire family came down with COVID-19 right at the beginning of the holidays. We couldn't go anywhere, and I spent the time in bed until the 8th. ^^

My first birding of the year was on the 9th. Overwintering since last year: Common Crane, Ruddy Shelduck, Common Shelduck, Tundra Swan, Korean Kestrel, Grey-faced Buzzard, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, thrushes, wagtails, Amur Stonechat, Chinese Pond Heron, and four species of starling.

For New Year's, you can't leave out a juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle — the bird celebrated in the Okinawan song "Washi nu Tui-bushi."

At year-end, having coughed up blood to get all my copy filed before the end of the year, I squeezed in a short final birdwatch for 2022.

Entering December, Dusky Thrushes, Brown-headed Thrushes, and Pale Thrushes had increased sharply. Most of the Dusky Thrushes were Naumann's Thrushes, and the variation in plumage tones makes comparing them a pleasure in itself. Brown-headed and Pale Thrushes have also relaxed since shortly after arrival and are easier to observe.

Manchurian Bush Warblers and Dusky Warblers were calling from patches of scrub here and there, though slightly fewer than last year.

Daurian Redstart, Amur Stonechat, Red-throated Pipit, and Eastern Yellow Wagtail are also wintering.

In addition to the three Ruddy Shelduck already present, four Common Shelduck also arrived. Tundra Swans, Common Cranes, and Eurasian Spoonbills continue to stay on.

Among the ducks, Northern Shoveler were the most numerous, followed by Eurasian Wigeon, Eurasian Teal, and Tufted Duck. Ferruginous Duck has not been confirmed this season.

Large numbers of Common Snipe are wintering; among roughly 200 counted across multiple paddies, there was one Swinhoe's Snipe.

Crested Serpent Eagles — both immatures and adults — have become easier to see. Road casualties will increase from here on, so care is needed when driving on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island.

アサクラサンショウクイを久しぶりに見てきました。人が集まるのを避けてゆっくり見られる場所で観察。 昨年のアサクラサンショウクイ と同様にホウオウボクにつく緑色のシャクトリムシを食っていました。

Ashy Minivet, first-winter. Busy moving around in search of insects, but when I watched quietly it stopped to preen. That's when you get your shot.

シギの春の渡りのヒバリシギの群れが到着しました。春、秋ともに沖縄や八重山で渡りの初陣を飾るのはヒバリシギです。

ヒバリシギを見ていると10羽近い数のホオジロハクセキレイの群れも舞い降りてきました。こちらも北上組と思われます。全てオス個体でした。

越冬していたコガモやハシビロガモもほとんど姿を消し、残りはわずかです。石垣島など沖縄では数少ないマガモも1羽だけいました。

石垣島で繁殖するカルガモはこの時季、増えてきました。繁殖組と通過組がいます。

ツグミの仲間も渡りが始まり、民家の屋根に渡る決意を固めた数羽が群れていたりします。

いろいろ忙しくてほとんど鳥見に行けません…。移動中に見た鳥を撮るのが精一杯です。

春の渡りが本格化するまでには、なんとか時間を作りたいですね…。^^;

そろそろ渡ってしまうので久しぶりに越冬中のハチジョウツグミを見てきました。相変わらずの警戒心のなさでした。

アカガシラサギはここ数日で複数羽を確認しましたが、どれも警戒心が強い。この個体は比較的落ち着いて観察できました。

カンムリワシの幼鳥を田んぼで確認。 一昨日の個体 とは別のようです。

妻の実家からほど近い駕与丁公園で子どもを遊ばせつつ横目でバードウォッチング。^^;

ここの公園は、池に柵がなかったりルアー釣りをしている人がいたりと比較的、自由な感じでした。

鳥の方はというと期待していなかったカササギが収穫。ほかにハチジョウツグミやツグミ、シロハラ、エナガ、シジュウカラ、キュウシュウコゲラ、ヒドリガモ、コガモ、マガモ、カンムリカイツブリ、カイツブリなどなどでした。

池に柵がないので子どもから全く目が離せない鳥見でした。頑張ればもう少し見つけられるかもしれませんね。

So it turns out you can see Eurasian Magpies in Fukuoka without going all the way to Saga.

昼休みに田んぼをのぞいてみるとベニバトのオス2羽と幼鳥1羽がいました。今年は例年になくベニバトの多い年です。秋から途絶えることなくあちこちの畑で確認できています。

同じ田んぼにハチジョウツグミも入っていました。シロハラ、アカハラは大変数が多くどこでも見られます。ツグミも増えてきました。ツグミより北に繁殖分布するハチジョウツグミも確認できるようになりました。

今日のタヒバリの仲間はムネアカタヒバリとタヒバリ、マミジロタヒバリの順に数が多い感じですが、日によって変わるので入れ替わりは激しいようです。

近くの漁港にはユリカモメが飛来しており、田んぼに水浴びにくる個体が観察できました。

ほかにもサカツラガンやヒシクイ、マガン、ブラックサシバ、アオシギ、ソリハシセイタカシギ、アカガシラサギなども元気に越冬中です。^^

Adult male Ruddy Ground Dove. It looked small among a flock of Oriental Turtle Doves, but its beautiful plumage stood out all the more.

与那国島出張で仕事の合間に少しだけ探鳥してきました。観察できたのは45種と少なめ…。

小鳥が大変多く、コホオアカとジョウビタキが特に多かったです。ついでマミジロタヒバリ、ムネアカタヒバリ、ハクセキレイ、シロハラ、シマアカモズ、ノビタキの順。ルリビタキとハチジョウツグミ、　シベリアアオジは1個体ずつ撮影できました。

撮影できなかったけど数が多かったのが、アカヒゲとノゴマ。ノゴマは2回ほど目の前に現れたのですが、狭い道路で一瞬の出来事で撮影できず。アカヒゲは地鳴きをあちこちで聞きました。クロツグミやミヤマホオジロ、ウグイスあたりは粘れば撮れそうです。

猛禽類はノスリやサシバ、チョウゲンボウ、ハヤブサ、ミサゴなどを確認。ノスリのみ撮影。カタグロトビは写真に収めたかったのですが、警戒心が強すぎてかないませんでした。カタグロトビは石垣島のように繁殖している可能性もありますね。

カモはキンクロハジロが数十羽とハシビロガモが十数羽。オシドリも2羽いました。そして、沖縄では珍しいスズガモを2羽撮影することができました!! トビ、ハシボソガラス、モズと同様にスズガモを撮影できたことは沖縄の人にしか分からない感動。^^;

冬のヤツガシラの季節がやってきました。12月下旬から渡りと越冬組のヤツガシラが石垣島にはやってきます。川平石崎にヤツガシラが1羽いました。師匠、名古屋からのバードウオッチャーの経由で教えていただきました。鳥の世界も狭いですねー。

ツグミの仲間はここ数日でドカンと増えました。今年もハチジョウツグミはたくさんです。ツグミの仲間はここ3年連続で多い冬が続いています。

This Eurasian Hoopoe is usually all about cockroaches, but today it was eating what looked like a hawkmoth larva. The thing was so big the bird kept wandering around with it dangling from the tip of its bill, but it finally managed to swallow it.

取材の合間に島の西側を回ってきました。川平石崎には、ハチジョウツグミやツグミ、ジョウビタキ、シマアカモズなど、崎枝には小さな沈砂池にハシビロガモやコガモがいました。帰り道にはサシバが獲物を狙って枝から牧草地を見下ろしていました。

When I arrived at Kabira Ishizaki, a female Daurian Redstart came out to meet me.

ハチジョウツグミやツグミ、シロハラなど渡ってきてから2カ月近く経っているので警戒心は薄れています。

This Naumann's Thrush was particularly approachable and kept wandering around close by.

数日前入手した、EF600 F4L IS II USMをテストしてきました。2倍のエクステンダーをつけてもよく解像します。レンズの解像度が上がったのと手ぶれ補正が4段になったことが大きいと思われます。

田んぼにいたカンムリワシとハチジョウツグミとイソシギでテストしました。それぞれの写真の等倍にクロップしたものも掲載しています。

A Crested Serpent Eagle shot with the EF600 F4L IS II USM alone. I kept the shutter speed lower than usual and shot at 1/320, but there is no camera shake and the resolution is good.

新しく購入したEF600mm F4L IS II USMを使ってみました。新型は軽くていいですね。

The call is slightly higher-pitched than a Dusky Thrush. In flight, the orange in the tail feathers stands out beautifully.

久しぶりのハチジョウツグミ。
