This is the extras edition of the 7th Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp. Since we had already observed both adult and juvenile Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe to a reasonable degree on the first day, the second day was spent observing a wider variety of species beyond snipe. This post covers those sightings, including observations from day one.

Made a circuit of the estuary for the first time in a while. Three Red Knots, Great Knot, Bar-tailed Godwit, Far Eastern Curlew, Terek Sandpiper, Grey-tailed Tattler, and Greater Sand Plover were all observed. A Pied Avocet had turned up in the paddies.

As the young birds begin to move away from their parents, juvenile Crested Serpent Eagles are becoming easier to observe. Multiple juveniles have been confirmed across Ishigaki Island. There were no typhoons this season so breeding success looks good — I'm looking forward to seeing how many individuals are counted.

Of the recent Greater Painted-snipe brood, one chick died in the nest, but the surviving chick is doing well with the parent. There are plenty of predators — cats, crows, and Black-winged Kites — so let's hope it makes it through safely.

The wader migration has started on Ishigaki Island. Along the coast, Grey-tailed Tattlers, Terek Sandpipers, Eurasian Whimbrels, and Greater Sand Plovers have appeared, while the paddyfields have received Common Greenshanks, Black-winged Stilts, Wood Sandpipers, Long-toed Stints, and Little Ringed Plovers. Numbers and species will keep building from here. With any luck, the snipe we have all been waiting for will show up in late August.

As the tide came close to high, Grey-tailed Tattlers and Terek Sandpipers gathered on the coastal rocks.

With shorebirds on the increase, I spent the entire day searching for waders. The result: starting with Asian Dowitcher, I recorded Pectoral Sandpiper, Little Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Pin-tailed Snipe, Greater Sand Plover, and more — 21 species of waders in total. Seeing this many species in a single day is one of the great pleasures of this time of year. ^^

The first fledgling of the season was a Northern Boobook. Two birds successfully fledged from the same site as last year. For Northern Boobook, the timing was quite early.

I confirmed a Ruddy Kingfisher excavating a nest hole. Individual numbers are high this season, and I have found so many nests that I have lost count. All I can do is hope each one goes well.

I also recorded Terek Sandpiper on Ishigaki Island — a species that seems to be down in numbers nationwide this year. Being late is normal for this species, but the low numbers are a concern. Nearby, a single Common Redshank was there alone. Several Grey-tailed Tattlers are staying in the area. Wandering Tattler has been recorded on Okinawa Island, so I am hopeful for Ishigaki Island too.

I recorded my first Terek Sandpiper and Sanderling of the season.

There were 3 Terek Sandpipers and 4 Sanderlings, along with Greater Sand Plovers, Siberian Sand Plovers, Grey-tailed Tattlers, Ruddy Turnstones, Red-necked Stints, Pacific Golden Plovers, and Kentish Plovers. Coastal birds are going to keep building from here on.

鳥見る時間が全く取れなくて海岸は久しぶりの訪問。オオメダイチドリが多く滞在、メダイチドリはオオメダイチドリより少なめでした。幼鳥の到着はまだです。

チュウシャクシギは10羽ほどを確認。今季初となる幼鳥も2羽混じっていました。ソリハシシギは砂浜を爆走してカニを捕まえていた。

キョウジョシギ、キアシシギ、アオアシシギなども滞在。

昨年、集団営巣したエリア にことしもツバメチドリが帰ってきました。40つがい80羽ほどが確認されています。すでにペアリングは済んでいるようでしたが、産卵、抱卵はこれからのようです。

雨の降る田んぼではアカガシラサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイなどが活発です。ジャワアカガシラサギもまだ滞在中です。

春の渡りもほぼ終わったので数は少ないですが、海岸にはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ソリハシシギ、アカアシシギなどが滞在しています。そんな中、なぜかマガンが1羽だけいました。ほとんどワンタッチでどこかへ飛んでいってしまいました。

石垣島をかすりもしなかった台風14号の通過後、少しだけ海岸と田んぼの巡回。今季初確認のオバシギが2羽のほかはほぼいつものメンバーでした。

友人から、ホウロクシギとダイシャクシギがいると連絡をもらいましたが、回る時間はなし!! やはり飛翔力の秀でた大型シギは台風が当たらないと石垣島にはなかなか降りないですね。

田んぼと海岸を巡回。キアシシギとキョウジョシギ、セイタカシギ、イソシギで幼鳥を初確認しました。本土からはトウネン、ソリハシシギなどの幼鳥飛来情報ありますが、石垣島ではまだ未確認ですね。

田んぼはシギ、チドリの数、種類とも多くなっていますが、海岸はそれほどでもありません。越冬組が到着すればもう少し賑やかになると思われます。

複数羽いたハリオシギは残すところ1羽のみとなりました。チュウジシギはたくさんいます。タシギはまもなく到着するものと思われます。

今季、3羽目となるハシブトアジサシが飛来しました。 前回の2羽 とはことなり鷹揚な個体で目の前を軽快に飛び回っていました。

台風6号でコロニーが全滅したエリグロアジサシは再繁殖に挑戦するようで岩礁を変えてその上を飛び回っています。

今季初のオオバンが田んぼに飛来。島内では 越夏個体が2羽 いますが、それとは別エリア。

海岸のソリハシシギや田んぼのヒバリシギも少しだけ増量。

まだ7月というのにアカアシシギの幼鳥が登場です。ずいぶん早いですね。

田んぼにはアカアシシギ以外にもアオアシシギやタカブシギ、セイタカシギなどがいました。

海岸にはオオメダイチドリ20羽ほどの群れやソリハシシギ、トウネン、シロチドリ、チュウシャクシギなどが滞在中です。

台風後、期待して田んぼを探してみるといました。キリアイの成鳥!! 秋の渡りではキリアイは幼鳥が多いので嬉しい出会いでした。^^ 厳密には翼を広げないと第1回夏羽から第2回冬羽へ換羽中なのか完全な成鳥羽なのかは分かりませんが…。

しかし、遠かった。70メートル先の17センチ前後の小さな鳥なので全て超トリミング。次は近くで撮りたいですね。

今季初のウズラシギを確認と昨日のオグロシギが2羽に増えていました。台風の影響で昨日、大量に田んぼに入ったシギ、チドリはずいぶん数が減っていました。そんなに焦ることはないとにと思ってしまいますが、さっさと島を後にして行ったようです。

田んぼと海岸を回ってシギ14種とチドリ6種を確認しました。今季初のチュウシャクシギは残念なことに写真に収められませんでした。ムナグロとコチドリはたくさんいましたが撮り忘れ…。^^;

今季初のクサシギは3カ所で合わせて4羽確認。幼鳥も増えてきて、今季初のヒバリシギ、セイタカシギ、メダイチドリそれぞれの幼鳥のほかにアカアシシギ、タカブシギで幼鳥を確認しました。

田んぼでは、今季初確認のチュウサギが1羽いました。

近所の海岸と田んぼで秋の渡りチェック。7月ともなれば、渡り鳥の世界ではすでに秋の移動が始まっています。楽しい季節がやってきましたね!!

海岸では、ツバメチドリやメダイチドリ、シロチドリ、トウネン、イソシギ、ソリハシシギが田んぼでは、タカブシギやヒバリシギ、アオアシシギ、アカアシシギ、コチドリが長旅で疲れた体を休めていました。

また、海岸や岩礁ではベニアジサシやエリグロアジサシ、コアジサシが繁殖しており大変賑やかです。

海岸と田んぼとサトウキビ畑を回ってシギ、チドリを見てきました。

田んぼには、今季2羽目のオグロシギが入っていたほか、サルハマシギやコアオアシシギ、ウズラシギなどが羽を休めていました。石垣島で繁殖もしているタマシギもいました。

海岸では、今季初確認のホウロクシギと今季初撮影のソリハシシギ、ダイゼン、キアシシギ、イソシギなどがいました。チュウシャクシギとダイシャクシギもいましたが、干潮で鳥が遠くて撮影できず…。

刈り取りが終わったさとうきび畑にはツバメチドリが50羽以上群れていましたが、発見して間もなく現れたカタグロトビに飛ばされてしまいました。^^;

海岸や田んぼなどに秋の渡りのシギ・チドリがたくさん入っていました。沖縄本島に異動してからは、あらためて石垣島の野鳥の密度の濃さに気付かされました。早く島に帰りたいなー。

エリマキシギやトウネン、ヒバリシギ、ソリハシシギ、キアシシギ、チュウシャクシギ、セイタカシギ、ジシギ、オオメダイチドリ、シロチドリ、ムナグロなどどこにでも何かしらのシギチがいました。^^

また、田んぼにはツメナガセキレイやキセキレイなどセキレイの仲間もたくさん入っていました。イワミセキレイは残念ながら探せませんでした。

大きな台風15号が石垣島を23日ごろ直撃する予報です。しかし、予報通り90度曲がって八重山に来るとは思えないので、それほど心配はしていません。

きょうは台風の影響もあり風が朝から強く吹いていました。正午の用事を済ませてから大浜海岸から宮良牧中、白水、平田原と回ってきました。ムナグロがここ数日でかなり増え、数羽の群れから二十数羽の群れまで田んぼや海岸で見られました。他は、チュウシャクシギやコアオアシシギ、ハマシギ、キアシシギ、ソリハシシギなどが見られました。

アジサシ類ではコアジサシとベニアジサシも見られました。

仕事の合間に時間が空いたので鳥見です。^^

大浜海岸には、シギチが増えてきました。きょうは、チュウシャクシギ、ムナグロ、ダイゼン、ソリハシシギ、ハマシギ、オオメダイチドリ、シロチドリなどが観察できました。^^

潮が引いていて遠かったので、ロクヨンに2倍のエクステンダをかまして1200mmです。^^;
