I did some birdwatching during free time on a work trip to Yonaguni Island.

The timing was good — in a short while I was able to see Oriental Plover, Black Redstart, Citrine Wagtail, Common Hoopoe, Pin-tailed Snipe, and Swinhoe's Snipe. It was all thanks to the senior birders staying on the island!!

Seven Large Sand Plovers arrived early in the morning at the go-to spot on Yonaguni Island. I got the message while I was at work, so I was fidgeting.

Two Citrine Wagtails were mixed in with a large flock of Eastern Yellow Wagtails feeding in a harvested rice paddy. The difference in character makes them stand out clearly even to the naked eye.

In flooded paddies, Black-tailed Godwits, Eurasian Whimbrels, Common Redshanks, Green Sandpipers, Common Shelducks and Eurasian Coots are wintering. Eurasian Coot numbers have been increasing. They have become a main prey item for the Upland Buzzard and Peregrine Falcon.

A bonus from the 2nd Ishigaki Snipe Camp: a Citrine Wagtail turned up — and a strikingly beautiful adult male in summer plumage at that. Juveniles appear every year, but adults are uncommon, so this was a real treat.

It was associating with a flock of Taiwan White Wagtails and Grey Wagtails, though it seemed the Grey Wagtails and the Citrine Wagtail didn't get on — I watched the Citrine Wagtail get chased off several times.

The main post from this snipe camp features large numbers of Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe, so please have a look at that too. The 3rd session is planned for late August. In autumn both Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe are present in good numbers, and it's great fun watching juveniles alongside adults and comparing moult stages between the two species.

農地はツメナガセキレイの大群が通過して行っています。その中にキガシラセキレイが2羽混じっていました。ほかの場所ではハクセキレイの群れの中に1羽確認されており、現在3羽のキガシラセキレイが滞在中です。

ハクセキレイの群れには、ホオジロハクセキレイやタイワンハクセキレイがそこそこの割合でいます。

First-winter plumage still makes up the majority, but breeding plumage is beginning to show on some individuals.

1時間ほどの隙間時間でキガシラセキレイ、タイワンハクセキレイ、ツメナガセキレイを確認できました。2日ほど前から悪天候が続いており、さまざまな鳥が渡りの途中に石垣島に舞い降りている感じです。

年末の追い込みで鳥を見に行く時間がない!! 横目で鳥を見ながら石垣島や与那国島を走り回り回っています。

そん中、移動中に撮影した鳥たちを数種。キガシラセキレイ2羽とコホオアカは数十羽の群れ、ツグミ、ノビタキたち。

タカサゴモズやカンムリワシ幼鳥なども出ていますが、時間がなくて見にいけない…。^^;

ツメナガセキレイの大群の中にキガシラセキレイが少なくとも5羽。あまりに数が多く、群れがとなりあった田んぼ2枚に分かれてしまっているので、鳥友と手分けして確認しました。その結果、友人が3羽、私が2羽撮影できました。

全て第1回冬羽なのですが、ちょっと違和感があります。今まで見てきたキガシラセキレイの第1回冬羽はもっと抜けた灰色で今回はわずかながら褐色が入っているような気がします。

キガシラセキレイの亜種は世界に2亜種(もしくは3亜種)おり、いつものキガシラセキレイより西に分布する亜種がこれに近いそうです。

一つの田んぼでキガシラセキレイやツバメチドリ、クロハラアジサシなどが餌を取ったり、休んだりしていました。

キガシラセキレイは、ツメナガセキレイの群れの中に1羽。忙しそうに歩き回りながら採餌していました。

ツバメチドリは、幼鳥と成鳥合わせて6羽の群れ。渡ってきたばかりなのか疲れたように座り込んでいました。クロハラアジサシ2羽も同じくお疲れモード。

タシギも何羽かいましたがこちらもじっとしていた。

先月も情報をもらっていたのですが、時間が取れず見られなかったキガシラセキレイ夏羽。今日は、なんとか行ける距離で出たとの情報をもらい早速見て来ました。

水路にいるとのことだったので、橋の上から双眼鏡で覗くもキガシラセキレイは見当たらず。反対側の池を探すといました。キガシラセキレイは、思っていた以上に黄色かった。^^

葦の根元や水路の底の小さな虫を食っていた。何かの拍子に驚くと水路と池を行ったり来たりするキガシラセキレイでした。
