6th Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp side notes: a Broad-billed Sandpiper showed at close range, and the paddies also produced a flock of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Long-toed Stints in summer plumage, freshly arrived Eurasian Whimbrels, breeding Greater Painted-snipes, and Cinnamon Bitterns in beautiful nuptial plumage.

While traveling between sites, we encountered Ruddy Kingfishers, a Crested Serpent Eagle, Red-throated Pipits, and a large flock of Eastern Yellow Wagtails.

When I first spotted it the Broad-billed Sandpiper was at the far end of the rice paddy, but it gradually worked its way closer.

One month after the first Javan Pond Heron, the Chinese Pond Heron has finally arrived. In recent years a pattern has continued in which Chinese Pond Herons arrive after the Javan Pond Herons. There are also more years now when Javan Pond Herons outnumber Chinese Pond Herons.

The Eastern Yellow Wagtails first confirmed last month are increasing steadily in number. The white-supercilium form appears to predominate. Every flock is a mix of juveniles and adults.

The Javan Pond Heron that arrived in July has been staying long-term and numbers have been building.

In the same rice field, Greater Painted-snipe and Common Moorhen are incubating eggs. They appear to breed multiple times a year. White-breasted Waterhens are at all sorts of different breeding stages simultaneously — newly hatched chicks alongside large, well-grown ones. They too may be raising several broods a year.

Three Javan Pond Herons are staying in the same rice field. They have also been recorded in other areas, and there seem to be a fair number on the island. On the Okinawa main island, arrivals have been confirmed in the north, central, and south. Their range appears to be expanding steadily eastward in recent years.

Common Emerald Doves are approaching the end of the breeding season, and encounters are becoming more frequent. Northern Boobooks, Ryukyu Scops Owls, and Ruddy Kingfishers are fledging one after another.

I recorded my first Cinnamon Bittern and Purple Heron of the season, along with a juvenile Little Egret.

Ishigaki Island is lively with a mix of winter visitors that have not yet headed north, passage migrants stopping over, and resident birds active as breeding season gets underway.

Most conspicuous lately are Cinnamon Bitterns in full breeding season — I am encountering them in rice paddies all over the place. Tufted Duck and Eurasian Coot are among those that should have gone north but are still here; most have departed, but a few individuals appear to remain. I have also recorded snipe on passage.

A juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle rescued on 28 October has been released. With no fractures or other serious injuries, it was returned to the wild in under a month. Ishigaki is a small island — please drive at a safe speed.

I had a close-range view of Lesser Cuckoo — an adult and a young bird, foraging in a pine grove. Around six Asian Koels were in the area too, making it a spot with a notably high concentration of cuckoos.

Despite the heavy rain, the Northern Boobook's incubation seems to be going smoothly; the male was keeping a steady watch. Year by year it has become less wary, and it shows no concern when walkers pass right in front of it.

Little Terns have arrived at the planned site of the cruise-terminal building — close to 30 birds, the same location as last year. Some individuals were already incubating. Last year the nest colony was completely wiped out by a PAC-3 deployment, so I wonder whether this season will go better. Kentish Plovers were running about — several chicks at various stages, from just-hatched to those that could manage a short flight.

White-breasted Waterhen are in full breeding mode; I often come across pairs with chicks. The breeding season is long, so for a while yet I expect to encounter families at all different stages of development.

In the paddies after the rice harvest, Purple Herons, Grey Herons, Intermediate Egrets, and Little Egrets are gathering to hunt.

The season's first Javan Pond Heron and White-browed Eastern Yellow Wagtail have arrived. Javan Pond Herons will trickle through from here on, while the Eastern Yellow Wagtails will suddenly surge in numbers.

This year's Cinnamon Bitterns appear to be dispersing; individuals in the same area have been thinning out.

With migration winding down on Ishigaki, the island's breeding species — Ruddy Kingfisher, Ryukyu Scops Owl, Northern Boobook, Ryukyu Sparrowhawk, Malayan Night Heron and others — are busy building nests and incubating.

Ruddy Kingfishers in particular are very active. On this day, while working my regular job, I counted 13 individuals in the morning and 7 in the afternoon — 20 in total with no duplicates. I get the feeling Ruddy Kingfisher numbers are higher than usual this year.

Crested Serpent Eagles are incubating at this time of year, so encounters are fewer. Black-winged Kites breed year-round, so a few sites are also in the incubation stage right now.

Black Paradise Flycatchers have been increasing too, and their songs can be heard from all directions.

A male Ruddy Kingfisher sang at close range on a forest track. I was able to record fine detail in the recording.

The rice fields are lively with migrants, though the spring shorebird passage feels like it may be winding down. In good weather, birds seem to be turning over every two or three days.

Pin-tailed Snipe, Swinhoe's Snipe, Little Stint, and Broad-billed Sandpiper — all popular birds — are still present.

今季初のハリオシギ、タカブシギ幼鳥、クサシギ、キセキレイが到着しました。

シロハラクイナは2回目の繁殖なのか真っ黒なヒナを連れたペアが目立ちます。

石垣島の留鳥たちの繁殖は早いです。 オリイヤマガラはすでに巣立ち 、私の勤める会社の社屋に巣を作ったリュウキュウツバメは3月後半に巣立ちしました。

シロハラクイナは親鳥2羽で6羽のヒナを連れて歩いていました。前の日にも見ているのでお気に入りの場所のようです。

昨日、自宅のベランダからアサクラサンショウクイを発見したので、付近を探しているとカタグロトビのペアを発見。何度か自宅前のサトウキビ畑で見ている個体だと思われます。農地にぽつんとある小さな雑木林で繁殖しそうです。

リュウキュウツミも繁殖期に入っており、メスが鳴いて威嚇しながらカラスを追い払っていました。オスは見当たりませんでしたが、昨年、一昨年も同所で子育てしているので今年も期待がかかります。

リュウキュウキビタキもあちこちで盛んにさえずっています。農地を車で走っているとリュウキュウキビタキのさえずりが聞こえてきました。小さな雑木林なので、よく探してみるとさえずっている若い個体を発見。まさかこんな場所にまでいるとは思いませんでした。

リュウキュウコノハズクもすでにペアができており、オスがメスを営巣木に誘っています。 先日は、昨年も繁殖に成功しているペアと思われる オスが樹洞からメスを呼ぶ姿 が観察できました。今夜は、新規の場所でオスがメスを巣穴に呼ぶ姿が確認できました。最近、自宅に引き込まれる電線にリュウキュウコノハズクのオスがやってきてしきりにメスを呼んでいます。通風口を狙っているのかもしれません…。^^; 近々、巣箱をかけたいと思います。

キンバトは姿は見えませんが「ウー、ウー」というさえずりと呼ぶにはあまりにも低音の鳴き声がよく聞こえるようになりました。

小雨の降る中、近所の田んぼを見回ってきました。

美しいリュウキュウヨシゴイの成鳥夏羽やアカガシラサギの夏羽、赤く染まったムネアカタヒバリ、ぐぜるハクセキレイ、婚姻色のセイタカシギ、夏羽がすこし見えだしたオジロトウネンなど季節の移ろいを感じさせる野鳥たちに出会えました。^^

前日までいたヤツガシラ、クロウタドリ、オオチドリ全て抜けていました。天気が良くなり、夜のうちに旅立ってしまったようです。(P.S. 翌日の27日には、ヤツガシラなど再び入りました)

それでも一縷の望みを託しつつ石垣島を回るとカンムリワシ、ズグロミゾゴイ、ムラサキサギ、シロハラクイナ、シマアカモズなど八重山らしい鳥たちが出迎えてくれました。越冬セキレイがどんどん姿を消す中、ホオジロハクセキレイが撮影できました。

いなくなる鳥ばかりでなく、先日から鳴き声は聞こえているアカショウビンがついに姿を現しました。石垣島ナンバーワン野鳥ガイドのスポッターさんから連絡をもらったのですが、私たちが現場についた時にはどこかへ引っ込んでしまったようでした。

ほかからもアカショウビンの姿を確認したと報が入り、いよいよ石垣島のアカショウビンシーズン到来ですね。^^

春の渡りが始まりつつあるのか、石垣島内のサシバはほとんどいなくなっています。暗色型サシバも見当たりませんでした。11月から滞在していたアオシギもここ数日の間に見られなくなりました。

タカサゴモズはお気に入りの餌場でイモムシやバッタなどを捕まえていた。シマアカモズは島内で移動している雰囲気ですが本格的な渡りはまだ始まっていないようであちこちの農耕地で確認できました。

渡りの早いカラアカモズは北上が始まっているのか、田んぼと牧草地が混在する農耕地で1羽確認できました。

田植えが始まった田んぼにはツメナガセキレイやハクセキレイ、キセキレイ、キガシラセキレイ、タヒバリ、ムネアカタヒバリなどの群れ。

穏やかな陽気に包まれ、カンムリワシの姿もよく目にしました。

朝一の取材を終えて、次まで時間が空いたのでお気に入りの田んぼを巡回。

相変わらずチュウジシギが多い中、明らかに異彩を放つ3羽を発見。ハリオシギの幼鳥と成鳥です。念のため尾羽を見せてくれるまで粘ると、群れの中で一番大柄な個体が名前の由来ともなった針のような尾羽を見せてくれました。3羽も同時に見られるなんて幸せ。^^

近くでは、今季初確認となるサルハマシギも撮影。幼鳥でした。

幼鳥といえば、セイタカシギとコアオアシシギの幼鳥もここ数日で増えてきました。残念ながらウズラシギの幼鳥は、まだ確認できていません。

ツバメの大群が入ってきていました。何羽いるのか分からないような数のツバメが田んぼの上空を飛び交っていた。動画がありますので数えてみてください。

沖縄では春か秋から冬にかけて毎年、観察されるソリハシセイタカシギですが、今年は6月という季節外れな時期に成鳥が1羽田んぼに入りました。すでに数日間の逗留です。

石垣島では単独の飛来が多いですが、昨年の11月には沖縄本島の泡瀬干潟にソリハシセイタカシギ10羽の群れが入りました。ワンシーズンに8羽があちこちに入ったこともあり、沖縄本島の方が数は多い印象です。どんなコースで渡りをしているのか興味深いですね。

ソリハシセイタカシギを見ているとシロハラクイナが目の前を走り抜け、水路にはリュウキュウヒクイナが現れました。残念ながらヒクイナの方は撮影できず…。

最近、仕事に忙殺されていましたが、新しい記者経験者が本日より入社し時間の余裕ができたので、取材の移動中に鳥見。もちろん紙面用の撮影も兼ねてです。なに載せようかなー。

町に近い田んぼでは、リュウキュウヨシゴイのオスが営巣の見張り番。メスが飛んできたら一緒に草むらに入って行きました。

カタグロトビも何度かの繁殖をへて、ずいぶん数を増やし、町の方へ進出しています。カタグロトビがホバリングするとシギなどは警戒していましたが、キジバトやリュウキュウヨシゴイは気にならない模様。

田んぼには、ウズラシギ とコアオアシシギ。ウズラシギのうちの1羽はオレンジ色のフラッグとメタルリングを装着。オーストラリアはヴィクトリア州から石垣島にやってきました。まだ旅の途中で最終地点はツンドラ。一体、この小さな体で何キロの旅をするのだろう。

田んぼの畦では子連れのシロハラクイナを見る機会が増えています。

山の方へ行ってみると林道をズグロミゾゴイの幼鳥が歩いていた。警戒心の全くない個体で自動車の通行の邪魔になっていた。^^;

カンムリワシは成鳥と幼鳥に会うことができ、リュウキュウアカショウビンも時折雨の降る曇天で活性が高く、たくさん観察することができました。

山あいの田んぼにはアカガシラサギもいて、今日は雨のおかげで、リュウキュウヨシゴイ、ズグロミゾゴイ、アカガシラサギと石垣島らしいサギ3種を半日で見ることができました。^^

シロハラクイナの親子連れをよく目にするようになりました。一瞬で目の前を通り過ぎることが多く、写真に収めるチャンスは少ないのですが、この日は運よく水たまりで水浴びをしている親子を見つけました。親鳥2羽とヒナが4羽でした。

シロハラクイナの家族の上ではカラスが2羽騒いでいたので、草陰で素早く水浴びするとサトウキビ畑の中に消えていきました。
