Stopped to check the coast on my way past and scanned for sandpipers and plovers. The tide was wrong and everything was far off. ^^;

Great Knots arrived in a small flock.

About five days on Yonaguni for work. Managed a little birdwatching in the spare time. Around Yonaguni Airport: two Upland Buzzards, an Eastern Buzzard, a Hen Harrier, a Peregrine Falcon and a Common Kestrel, apparently hunting small birds in the grass along the runway.

Pale Thrushes were present in large numbers across the island — flocks of thirty or more in the best spots. A few Brown-headed Thrushes were also seen. Pale Thrushes and Brown-headed Thrushes were concentrated mainly in the northern part of the island from Sonai to Kubura, while Dusky Thrushes were conspicuous in the south from Minamimakiba to Hikawa.

Little Buntings, Eastern Yellow Wagtails, Red-throated Pipits and Daurian Redstarts were all holding on through the strong winds. At Kubura fishing port, two Black-tailed Gulls and four Black-headed Gulls were staying over.

A juvenile Upland Buzzard appeared in the distance.

The one Crested Serpent Eagle juvenile that's been reliably viewable was at it again today — foraging at its own pace in the rice fields, walking the bunds and catching what looked like small insects.

Malayan Night Heron adults are turning up more often. This day I had three adults and one juvenile.

The Pin-tailed Snipe is still present. The same paddy field held nearly 30 Common Snipe — presumably spring migrants passing through. New arrivals of Common Redshank, Common Greenshank and Wood Sandpiper were also noted. Migration is picking up pace.

The season's first Northern Lapwing and Grey-headed Lapwing have also arrived.

Warm days have continued, and I can now hear Ryukyu Flycatchers singing as I drive the forest roads. Common Emerald Doves are calling too. I also confirmed a Ruddy Kingfisher calling from my house — earlier than usual, possibly due to the mild winter.

Crested Serpent Eagles are in the early stages of the breeding season; wherever I go — rice paddies, sugarcane fields, forest roads — I find them in pairs.

Eastern Yellow Wagtails look set to finish the season without ever reaching their peak wintering numbers. Could this also be a mild-winter effect, with fewer flocks moving south from the continent?

A quick burst of birdwatching in a spare moment. Crested Serpent Eagles are active and encounters with both adults and juveniles are frequent. Common Kestrels are wintering all over the place.

Two Black-tailed Gulls were at the fishing harbour, apparently eyeing up bait from the anglers.

Northern Lapwing flocks have appeared in various locations. The largest was over ten birds. Red-billed Starlings and Dusky Thrushes come to the compost heaps in the sugarcane fields every day.

いろいろ忙しくて鳥を見に行けない日が続き、約3週間ぶりのバードウオッチングへ。といっても短時間のうちに海岸を2カ所ほど回っただけでした。

海岸はシギやチドリでずいぶんにぎやかになっていました。春の渡りが始まったようです。

小学生の野鳥観察会の取材をしたついでに鳥見。

カンムリワシ、サシバ、ウミネコの飛翔と愛想のいいアカガシラサギやタイワンハクセキレイ、沖縄では珍しいマガモ、越冬シマアカモズ、アカハラなど見られました。^^

家族旅行で北海道へ4泊5日。最終日の朝、3時間だけ時間をもらい石狩市の石狩湾新港と札幌市内を流れる茨戸川で鳥見。

鵡川でカモメを見る予定でしたが、時間が思った以上に取れず何の情報も予習もないままの探鳥でしたが札幌市内でオジロワシが見られるとは!! しかも成鳥と幼鳥の2羽。さすが北海道だなー。

石狩湾新港では、オオセグロカモメやシロカモメ、ワシカモメ、ウミネコ。同港からはまなすの丘公園に延びる道では、カワラヒワの群れやホオアカ、アカゲラを確認しました。

茨戸川では、オジロワシのほかにハジロカイツブリやマガモ、キンクロハジロなどを撮影することができました。

一日中逆光の海岸を見てきました。カモもシギもチドリもまばらでしたが、リーフ内を鳥を脅かさないようにぐるーっと歩いて順光側まで周り姿勢を低くして双眼鏡で数少ないカモを見ていると見慣れない模様のカモを発見。手元に図鑑はないのでとりあえず何枚か撮影し、自宅で図鑑を見てみるとヨシガモのメスでした。妻の実家の福岡へ行った時は和白干潟でヨシガモはたくさんみるのですが、どうしても目が行くのは美しいオス。地味なメスこそしっかり観察しておかないといけませんね。反省。おそらく以前から同所で越冬していたものと思われますが、今まで全く気づきませんでした…。^^;

しばらくヨシガモを眺めていると、いつの間にかやってきたカモメの仲間が近くで水浴びを始めました。この海岸で見かけるズグロカモメにしてはずいぶん大きく感じたので双眼鏡で見てみるとなんとウミネコでした。沖縄でウミネコを見たのは初めてです。 2年前に与根漁港で見たカモメ ほどではないですが、ウミネコも沖縄では珍鳥の部類です。

クロツラヘラサギが3羽いました。この場所はクロツラヘラサギの生息環境ではないので長くは止まらないと思われます。新しく飛来した個体でしょうか。

シギやチドリは少なく、シロチドリの群れがいたほかは、アオアシシギが数羽。ヒバリシギやメダイチドリがまばらにいた程度でした。
