I tracked down the second-ever Ring-necked Duck for Okinawa Prefecture among a flock of 600 Tufted Ducks. The distance was over 200 metres and branches and leaves limited the view, but after searching for about an hour I managed to find it. Once I knew which area it was floating in, I didn't lose it again and was able to watch it for over an hour.

Ring-necked Duck, male breeding plumage. Following a record on Miyako Island in 2023, this became the second record in the prefecture — a valuable sighting.

First records this season of Black-tailed Godwit, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Striated Heron. Unless the weather turns rough, large waders like the Black-tailed Godwit don't come down to Ishigaki. Striated Heron is scarce on the island, so finding one felt like a bonus.

The Black-tailed Godwit is still very much in winter plumage.

那覇空港の南側に位置する具志干潟、瀬長島と与根の三角池で探鳥してきました。

具志干潟には、ダイシャクシギやチュウシャクシギ、ダイゼン、キアシシギ、ハマシギ、メダイチドリのほか、オニアジサシやミサゴ、ダイサギやコサギなど魚食の鳥たちが集まっていました。

マングローブの根元にはササゴイが獲物を狙っていた。具志干潟にササゴイを見たのは初めて。

瀬長島の球場では芝生でムネアカタヒバリ10やムナグロ、コチドリ、シロチドリ、ハクセキレイ、スズメ、ムクドリ、ホシムクドリなどが餌を採っています。途中、チョウゲンボウ2羽に荒らされましたが、しばらくすると戻ってきた。

三角池には、エリマキシギが2羽入っていました。ほかにコガモ十数羽やセイタカシギ、アオアシシギ、ハマシギ、ヒバリシギなどがいます。

海岸や河川、ため池、ダム湖にササゴイやオオバン、ヒドリガモ、コガモなど冬鳥の姿が増えてきました。

農耕地にはツバメチドリ数羽の群れが入っていました。こちらはさらに南へ渡っていきます。

アカガシラサギが公園の池にやってきました。

昨年の9月からことしの5月までいたアカガシラサギ と同個体かもしれません。 このアカガシラサギは、本来なら夏羽に変わっていないといけない5月に、まだ冬羽をまとう換羽の遅い個体 でした。

そして、ほかのアカガシラサギが冬羽に変わっている中、やはり換羽が遅く、一部に冬羽が見えていますが、未だにほとんど夏羽で身を包んでいます。 1週間前に石垣島で見つけたアカガシラサギ は完全な冬羽でした。

水路には、ササゴイの幼鳥がいました。カイツブリやウを見ていたら上流の方からやってきて目の前を横切っていった。しかし、警戒心がとても強く、散歩の人が来るたびに右往左往していた。落ち着かない様子でしたが、ここで越冬するのだろうか。
