Red Collared Dove, Javan Pond Heron, Chinese Pond Heron, Black-winged Kite and more

That day I confirmed about 10 Red Collared Doves at four locations on Ishigaki Island. Both adults and juveniles were present in good numbers. As usual, they were mixed in with flocks of Oriental Turtle Dove.

A small flock of three Javan Pond Herons and one Chinese Pond Heron also arrived. They seemed to be feeding in the rice paddies and irrigation channels.

The Black-winged Kite pair raising three newly fledged chicks was busy hunting for food, catching rats and carrying them back to the nest.

Most of the snipe were Common Snipe, with a few Swinhoe's Snipe; I could not find any Pin-tailed Snipe. The rice and weeds have grown tall, making them harder to find.

I also confirmed a few Red-throated Pipits, but unfortunately the grass got in the way and I could not take any photos.

Black-winged Kite, Black Wood Pigeon, Garganey, Pied Avocet and more (video)

For the first time in a while, I came across a Black-winged Kite pair with little wariness at Kabira. They seemed to be eyeing prey in the grassland. On Ishigaki Island they can now be seen anywhere: Hirakubo in the north, Kabira in the west, and around Ishigaki City Hall in the south. I can watch them hunting in the evening almost every day from my own living room.

The Crested Serpent Eagles have finished raising their young, and wintering Common Kestrels are increasing. The migration of Chinese Sparrowhawks and Grey-faced Buzzards is also going well.

This season I have had many chances to observe Black Wood Pigeons, with flocks of several birds flying across the island and individuals eating fruit in the trees.

In the rice paddies, I was able to confirm Pied Avocet, Garganey and Eurasian Teal together, the first of the season.

All Three Snipe Species Together

All three snipe species on Ishigaki Island — Pin-tailed Snipe, Swinhoe's Snipe, and Common Snipe — are finally present at the same time. From here, Pin-tailed and Swinhoe's Snipe numbers will decline, while Common Snipe will increase.

Yonaguni Island

I went birdwatching on the side while on a work trip to cover the Yonaguni Town Council election. ^^

I confirmed multiple migrating Chinese Sparrowhawk, and Common Kestrel had also arrived to overwinter. Migrating Oriental Dollarbird and Grey-streaked Flycatcher were also present, along with good numbers of overwintering Brown Shrike, Arctic Warbler, and Eastern Yellow Wagtail.

In recent years the rice paddies on Yonaguni Island have decreased, so waders and plovers are sparse — just small numbers of Black-winged Stilt, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint, Common Sandpiper, and Red-necked Stint.

Common Emerald Dove, having finished breeding, formed small flocks and I watched them feeding on several occasions.

Isabelline Shrike
Isabelline Shrike

Isabelline Shrike were found in a variety of habitats — farmland, residential areas, the harbour, forest tracks and more.

Isabelline Shrike

Subspecies such as Isabelline Shrike and Chinese Grey Shrike turn up, but the subtle differences make identification tricky, especially for females and juveniles.

Grey-streaked Flycatcher
Grey-streaked Flycatcher

Grey-streaked Flycatcher were coming into Yonaguni Island in considerable numbers.

Arctic Warbler
Arctic Warbler

I also heard Arctic Warbler calls. Numbers are still low, but wintering birds will be increasing from now on.

Citrine Wagtail
Citrine Wagtail

Found a leucistic Eastern Yellow Wagtail. It was in a flock of "Siberian Thrush"-type Eastern Yellow Wagtails, so it's probably that subspecies. When I first spotted it I thought it might be a crazy rare subspecies. ^^;

Pacific Golden Plover

Pacific Golden Plovers were also in, with multiple flocks on farmland and grassland.

This Mallard was observed at the same reservoir last year as well. It may be spending the entire year at this pond, unable to migrate due to some kind of trouble.
