Pechora Pipits have arrived again this season, in small numbers. Last year I found two among a flock of Red-throated Pipits. This time I noticed them by their calls overhead, and after a flock of five dropped into the paddy I searched and found two individuals. ^^

While looking for the Pechora Pipits, a Brown-cheeked Rail also appeared. It was a brief encounter — the bird was very wary — but a welcome one.

Ducks are growing in number and variety; I had my first Northern Shoveler of the season on this day. By the time the ducks arrive, both Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe have already moved on, leaving large numbers of Common Snipe behind.

The Javan Pond Heron that arrived in late July was still present. At peak there were three, but now only one remains. It should stay until around February, being in wintering mode.

Elsewhere, I noted Masked Bunting and Yellow Bittern. A Pied Avocet apparently made its way into the grounds of a facility where a friend of mine works.

Paddyfield Pipit seen again this season.

林道でズグロミゾゴイの幼鳥に遭遇。座って見ているとこちらへ寄ってきて2メートルほど横を通り過ぎました。ズグロミゾゴイは警戒心の弱い個体が多いです。

越冬中のクイナに最近、よく会います。この日は、バンやタシギの群れていました。

田んぼにはムネアカタヒバリ、コホオアカ、ハクセキレイなどが多くいます。シベリアジュリン、ノゴマ、ミヤマホオジロ、キマユホオジロも滞在中ですが藪の中にいて姿を見るには、なかなか根気が入ります。

ツグミが再び増えてきました。シロハラ、アカハラ、トラツグミもいますが、こちらも根気がないと写真には収められませんね。^^;

今季2個体目のクイナ。前回は水路で今回は田んぼ。クイナとヒメクイナは毎年のように確認されますが、警戒心が強くてなかなか撮影まではいたりませんね。今回はタシギを見ていたらひょっこり現れました。^^ 以前から同所で越冬している個体だと思われます。

Okinawa Rail in winter plumage. It was moving in and out of the grass. At first glance it looks plain, but on a closer look it wears an extraordinarily beautiful plumage.

クイナ科に属するクイナ。クイナの中のクイナをやっと写真に収めることができました。この「クイナ」と名のつくやつらの警戒心の強さはなんなんでしょう?

事前に沖縄本島の師匠から情報をもらっており、前日には、友人が見たと言うクイナをぜひ撮りたいと仕事を終えて教えてもらったポイントへ行ってきました。夕方、現場についてすぐに水たまりを歩くクイナを発見。しかし、警戒心が強く、すぐに草むらに隠れてしまいました。水浴びをしたい感じだったので同じところに出てくるだろうと50メートルほど離れて見張っていると約15分後に思惑通り出てきてくれました。

その後も、自動車や町内放送に驚き何度か草むらに潜るのですが、やはり10分から20分たつと出てきてくれます。小雨が降り暗かったので証拠程度の写真ですが、初めてクイナを撮ることができました。師匠と友人に感謝!!
