I made my third trip to Yonaguni Island this month. Small passerines were the main attraction: White Wagtail, Eastern Yellow Wagtail, Little Bunting, Daurian Redstart, and Brown Shrike among others.
There was a mixed flock of three subspecies of White Wagtail. This is a male leucopsis.
On Ishigaki Island, juvenile Black-winged Kites and Crested Serpent Eagles have been showing themselves and delighting birdwatchers. Common Kestrels, Grey-faced Buzzards, and Eurasian Sparrowhawks are wintering. Upland Buzzards, Peregrine Falcons, and Eastern Marsh Harriers are also present.
A Javan Pond Heron and a Chinese Pond Heron are wintering companionably in the same rice paddy. They have been here since last year and made it safely through the new year. A few breeding-plumage feathers are beginning to show.
A Black-winged Kite observed at eye level at one of my regular spots. It's perching on its favourite branch as usual, eyes gleaming red.
Lesser White-fronted Goose, Siberian Pipit, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Caspian Tern all photographed for the first time this season in one go. Red Collared Doves continue to stay at multiple locations.
Common Snipe numbers are growing as birds settle into wintering mode. Dunlin, Green Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, and Common Redshank are also wintering in the island's paddies, though in small numbers.
Among raptors, Crested Serpent Eagle is becoming easier to find, and Common Kestrel, Grey-faced Buzzard, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, and Peregrine Falcon are all increasing.

田んぼにハイタカがいました。うれしい反面、ツメナガセキレイを飛ばしてしまうのがちょっと迷惑。^^;
近所の河川にはヨシゴイ2羽とリュウキュウヨシゴイ1羽がよく姿を現します。かち合うとけんかが始まります。^^;
A juvenile Eurasian Sparrowhawk. A relaxed individual — it showed no concern even when people walked by on their stroll.
幼鳥時代から石垣島で越冬している暗色型のサシバ(通称ブラックサシバ) が3年連続で飛来しました。 昨年は成鳥になって帰ってきて 3月まで滞在しました。これから先も毎年、元気に石垣島に帰ってくることを願います。
河川沿いではチュウヒがハイタカに追われていました。ハイタカは先月からあちこちの田んぼで見ることができますが、どこも警戒心が強いです。
A dark-morph Grey-faced Buzzard that first appeared as a juvenile in autumn 2018, now returning for the third consecutive year.
石垣島へ1泊2日のバードウオッチングに行ってきました。島の友人たちから今年は鳥が少ないと聞いていましたが、想像以上に少なかったです。田んぼを回ってもシギやチドリがほんのわずかであとはアマサギやコサギなど。今回、カモ類は軽く見ただけでしたが、池やダムなど合わせて100羽ぐらいしかいませんでした。セキレイの仲間もほとんどいませんでした。
島では、久しぶりにカタグロトビを見てきました。1日目は夕方、餌取りをしているところを発見したのですが、撮影にはいたらず。2日目になんとか見ることができました。^^
暗色型サシバは2日目の午後、意外と近い枝に止まっているところを発見。しかし、警戒心は強めでした。現在、沖縄には暗色型サシバが少なくとも3個体はいることになります。沖縄本島の暗色型サシバは 南部 と 中部 に1羽ずつ。
カンムリワシの幼鳥は、今年は非常に少ないようでした。成鳥は、あちこちの畑や田んぼで見ることができました。
田んぼでは、ベニバトの成鳥メスが1羽電線に止まっているところを発見。地面に降りるのを待っていたら、どこからともなく現れたハイタカに飛ばされた…。^^;
ほかには、タカサゴモズを牧草地で発見したのですが事前情報がなかったため、「シマアカモズか?」と不用意に寄って飛ばしてしまい、写真には収められず…。場所を島の友人たちに教えてきたので、近いうちに写真がウェブログなどにアップされるでしょう。^^ キガシラセキレイもベニバトと同じ場所にいたのですが、こちらもハイタカに飛ばされて行方不明になってしまいました…。キガシラセキレイは、ハイタカが現れたおかげで見られたようなものですが、写真に撮っておきたかったー。
ユリカモメが田んぼに1羽いました。 2016年に同じ時期に同じ場所で見ています が、前回は成鳥で今回は幼鳥でした。
稲刈りをしているとムラサキサギも集まってきました。
今回もバードウオッチングガイドのスポッターさんや師匠、Hさんにお世話になり、短い日程でいろいろ見ることができました。ありがとうございます。
