6th Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp side notes: a Broad-billed Sandpiper showed at close range, and the paddies also produced a flock of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Long-toed Stints in summer plumage, freshly arrived Eurasian Whimbrels, breeding Greater Painted-snipes, and Cinnamon Bitterns in beautiful nuptial plumage.

While traveling between sites, we encountered Ruddy Kingfishers, a Crested Serpent Eagle, Red-throated Pipits, and a large flock of Eastern Yellow Wagtails.

When I first spotted it the Broad-billed Sandpiper was at the far end of the rice paddy, but it gradually worked its way closer.

With shorebirds on the increase, I spent the entire day searching for waders. The result: starting with Asian Dowitcher, I recorded Pectoral Sandpiper, Little Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Pin-tailed Snipe, Greater Sand Plover, and more — 21 species of waders in total. Seeing this many species in a single day is one of the great pleasures of this time of year. ^^

A Bar-tailed Godwit in summer plumage that suddenly dropped in alongside Black-winged Stilts and Black-tailed Godwits near the end of a shorebird search. Looking sharp in that summer plumage.

The Collared Kingfisher that had been absent since around mid-February has come back to Ishigaki Island. Based on behavioral patterns and physical features — bill shape and plumage — it appears to be the same individual as before.

In the paddies, Pied Avocet, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, and Sharp-tailed Sandpiper have been forming impressive mixed flocks, much to the delight of visiting birdwatchers from off the island. ^^

The Collared Kingfisher, which had not been seen for over a month, has returned to Ishigaki Island.

I have been watching snipe every day, but in between I also had two Broad-billed Sandpipers. Marsh Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Red-necked Stint, Dunlin, Black-winged Stilt, Long-toed Stint, and Wood Sandpiper are also still present.

I went out to scout for the 3rd Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp. That said, these are rice paddies I check every day, so I already have a fair idea of who's around.

First records for the season: juvenile Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint, and Dunlin. All three are season firsts as juveniles.

Swinhoe's Snipe, juvenile. A dark individual — or rather, one with a strong brownish tone. Every now and then you get a Swinhoe's Snipe like this.

There was a Pin-tailed Snipe in the finest condition I've seen this season. Among the Swinhoe's Snipe, one individual had notably narrow outer tail feathers — an interesting bird.

The juvenile Broad-billed Sandpiper is a first for the season.

Ishigaki had a rough day under the influence of a tropical depression. When the rain eased I did the rounds of the paddies and found the first Broad-billed Sandpiper of the season had arrived — encountered in a puddle in a sugarcane field. Out on the grassland I also picked up first records of Curlew Sandpiper and Grey Plover. Bad weather does have a way of pushing birds into unexpected places.

In the same area, the Javan Pond Heron count is up to two birds and the Broad-billed Sandpiper to three, much to the delight of visiting birdwatchers from outside the prefecture.

A juvenile Asian Dowitcher has arrived. It is moving around the paddies together with Common Greenshank and Black-winged Stilt.

Broad-billed Sandpipers are turning up in paddies across the area — four birds in three locations. All juveniles, naturally. I'd love to see an adult one of these days….

Multiple Ruffs have also arrived. Temminck's Stint numbers are slowly building too.

The first juvenile Eurasian Whimbrel of the season was also confirmed. The paddies are getting livelier with each passing week of autumn.

I recorded my first Broad-billed Sandpiper and Temminck's Stint of the season — both juveniles. A few Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe were also present. Common Snipe still not showing up as usual.

In the paddies: Black-winged Stilt, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint, Red-necked Stint, Little Ringed Plover, Pacific Golden Plover, and Terek Sandpiper.

The rice fields are lively with migrants, though the spring shorebird passage feels like it may be winding down. In good weather, birds seem to be turning over every two or three days.

Pin-tailed Snipe, Swinhoe's Snipe, Little Stint, and Broad-billed Sandpiper — all popular birds — are still present.

The shorebird passage seems to be reaching its peak and the rice fields are extremely busy. Greater Painted-snipe — the only snipe that breeds on Ishigaki — are active as a couple.

Four Curlew Sandpipers in various stages of moult from summer to winter plumage are present. Also here: the third Little Stint of the season, three Broad-billed Sandpipers, the season's first Temminck's Stint, along with Red-necked Stint, Long-toed Stint, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, and Pacific Golden Plover — all in one area.

I went to Nagoya for a post-operative check-up after cervical spine surgery and did some birding while I was there. After three years of trying, I finally got to see Western Sandpiper. I also observed Broad-billed Sandpiper, Great Knot, and Red-necked Stint.

Along with the Western Sandpiper, Baikal Teal and Japanese Wagtail were lifers for me.

The Little Stint was at first sitting and resting in a hollow, but there was something about it that felt slightly off. ^^ Still, once it mixes into a flock of Red-necked Stints it gets difficult.

ジシギはチュウジシギが激増してハリオシギは減少。なぜかタシギが増えず心配です。

7月から長逗留しているジャワアカガシラサギが見やすくなっています。台風後に増えたトンボを捕食しようと農道や畔に出てくるので見つけやすいです。

キリアイの幼鳥も滞在中。また台風が近づいてきているのでしばらくは渡れないでしょうね。

ハリオシギ、チュウジシギも滞在中。

同じエリアにある田んぼにヨーロッパトウネン、ソリハシセイタカシギ、キリアイ、ハリオシギ、アカエリヒレアシシギのほか、トウネン、オジロトウネン、セイタカシギ、チュウジシギ、ウズラシギ、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギ、ヒバリシギ、タカブシギ、クサシギ、コチドリ、ムナグロ、ツバメチドリなどが大集結していました。石垣島のシギ、チドリファンにはたまりませんね。^^

秋の渡りが盛り上がってきている石垣島。

数日前のベニバト5羽 は滞在中。キリアイはたまに姿を消したりしながらも継続的に見られています。ハリオシギは数を増減しながらエリアもその時々で変わりますが、結構な数が逗留中です。チュウジシギ、タシギも順調に数を増やし、ジシギ天国となっています。サルハマシギは幼鳥3羽が飛来。アカアシシギやコアオアシシギは幼鳥が目立ち、ヒバリシギ、タカブシギは嫌になるほどいます。

台風後、島にやってきたハジロクロハラアジサシは3カ所で4羽が残っています。大量に入ったクロハラアジサシは数を減らしていますが、一部が滞在中。

今季はジャワアカガシラサギが多いのですが、アカガシラサギもぽつぽつと入っています。

多忙につき、4月16日までの3日分のバードウオッチングの成果の一部をまとめてご紹介します。今季初となるチュウジシギをやっと確認。後日、追記します。

情報もらっても見に行っていない鳥もいますので、そのあたりは割愛します…。^^; 以下の写真の通り、田んぼや海岸には日替わりで渡り鳥たちがやってきています。この時季の石垣島は、とっても楽しいですよ。

後日追記

ブロンズトキは毎日のようにハヤブサに追われて落ち着きません。群れの数も19羽から16羽に減りました。食われたか逸れたかしたのでしょう。滞在場所も以前とは違う場所になりました。

海岸にはシギやチドリが日替わりで出たり入ったりを繰り返しています。メダイチドリやキョウジョシギ、トウネンあたりがレギュラーメンバーでその合間にサルハマシギやミユビシギ、オバシギなどが渡ってきます。キリアイも珍しく近くで見ることができました。夏羽のハシブトアジサシも河口で飛び回っています。

台風後、期待して田んぼを探してみるといました。キリアイの成鳥!! 秋の渡りではキリアイは幼鳥が多いので嬉しい出会いでした。^^ 厳密には翼を広げないと第1回夏羽から第2回冬羽へ換羽中なのか完全な成鳥羽なのかは分かりませんが…。

しかし、遠かった。70メートル先の17センチ前後の小さな鳥なので全て超トリミング。次は近くで撮りたいですね。

今季初のウズラシギを確認と昨日のオグロシギが2羽に増えていました。台風の影響で昨日、大量に田んぼに入ったシギ、チドリはずいぶん数が減っていました。そんなに焦ることはないとにと思ってしまいますが、さっさと島を後にして行ったようです。
