A Greater White-fronted Goose has been present for several days now, but for some reason the guide is apparently calling it a Greylag Goose. To me it is clearly a juvenile Greater White-fronted Goose… ^^; A juvenile Tundra Swan has also arrived on its own. On Iriomote, two Tundra Swans and a Siberian Crane are staying as well.

Multiple Pied Avocets have turned up across the island. That day I tallied six birds in total — a group of four and singles at two separate locations. In the paddies, Northern Lapwings, Pacific Golden Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Little Ringed Plovers, Common Greenshanks, Common Redshanks, Wood Sandpipers, Dunlins, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers and Black-winged Stilts are all wintering.

This season I had already confirmed the subspecies leucopsis and ocularis White Wagtails, but this day I was finally able to see the subspecies alba White Wagtail. That is pretty much how it goes every year.

I tracked down the second-ever Ring-necked Duck for Okinawa Prefecture among a flock of 600 Tufted Ducks. The distance was over 200 metres and branches and leaves limited the view, but after searching for about an hour I managed to find it. Once I knew which area it was floating in, I didn't lose it again and was able to watch it for over an hour.

The Pied Avocet is down to one bird, but it shows no wariness and has been staying for an extended period. Nearby, several Northern Lapwings and two Grey-headed Lapwings are also lingering.

A flock of Common Snipe is present at the same site. There are no Swinhoe's Snipe or Pin-tailed Snipe. Two Tundra Swans are happily wintering together on this southern island.

The Pied Avocets that arrived in a group of eleven in November have dwindled one by one, down to a single bird now.

The juvenile Black-winged Kite seems to have finally become independent recently. Black-winged Kites on Ishigaki breed multiple times a year, so the population keeps growing. The Peregrine Falcon pair that wintered here last year has returned to the same spot again this year. An Upland Buzzard is also in the same area, keeping the Eurasian Coots and herons on edge. A nearby juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle looked startled as the two Peregrines chased it around.

The two Tundra Swans are still present. Around ten Northern Lapwings — all juveniles — have arrived. The rice paddies are busy with Marsh Sandpipers, Common Greenshanks, Common Redshanks, Wood Sandpipers, Northern Shovelers and Eurasian Teals. The first Tufted Duck of the season was also confirmed.

A Black-winged Kite juvenile with zero wariness. Given the location and timing, it may be the individual that was being fed in mid-air by a parent bird previously.

It has been over a month since the Collared Kingfisher appeared on Ishigaki. Its daily routine has become predictable, so the encounter rate is staying at nearly 100%. It has become more wary, though, so the key is to observe without letting the Collared Kingfisher notice you.

The Tundra Swan that was on Iriomote has moved over to Ishigaki. Conversely, the Oriental Stork that was on Ishigaki has crossed over to Iriomote.

In the woodland, a Narcissus Flycatcher was found. Arctic Warblers, Japanese Bush Warblers and Manchurian Bush Warblers are also wintering.

The long-staying Collared Kingfisher. When the sun hits it, it flashes brilliantly and the contrast intensifies.

The Ruddy Shelduck that have been present since last year fluctuate between three and five birds. Two Tundra Swans are also on a long stay.

One Mallard was among a flock of Eastern Spot-billed Ducks — an unusual sighting for Ishigaki Island. A flock of 42 was at the dam.

It has become considerably less wary than when it first arrived.

At year-end, having coughed up blood to get all my copy filed before the end of the year, I squeezed in a short final birdwatch for 2022.

Entering December, Dusky Thrushes, Brown-headed Thrushes, and Pale Thrushes had increased sharply. Most of the Dusky Thrushes were Naumann's Thrushes, and the variation in plumage tones makes comparing them a pleasure in itself. Brown-headed and Pale Thrushes have also relaxed since shortly after arrival and are easier to observe.

Manchurian Bush Warblers and Dusky Warblers were calling from patches of scrub here and there, though slightly fewer than last year.

Daurian Redstart, Amur Stonechat, Red-throated Pipit, and Eastern Yellow Wagtail are also wintering.

In addition to the three Ruddy Shelduck already present, four Common Shelduck also arrived. Tundra Swans, Common Cranes, and Eurasian Spoonbills continue to stay on.

Among the ducks, Northern Shoveler were the most numerous, followed by Eurasian Wigeon, Eurasian Teal, and Tufted Duck. Ferruginous Duck has not been confirmed this season.

Large numbers of Common Snipe are wintering; among roughly 200 counted across multiple paddies, there was one Swinhoe's Snipe.

Crested Serpent Eagles — both immatures and adults — have become easier to see. Road casualties will increase from here on, so care is needed when driving on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island.

The Greylag Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, and Tundra Swan are settling in for a long winter stay. Duck numbers are also increasing. Quite a few have turned up at the dam, but without a scope they're just too far away…

Two Ruddy Shelducks, two Lesser White-fronted Geese, a Common Crane, and a Greater White-fronted Goose are all on an extended stay. On this day I couldn't find the Greylag Goose or the Taiga Bean Goose. They were quite wary, so perhaps they've retreated to the Ampar wetlands area.

A Tundra Swan arrived for the first time in about two years. Last time it stayed until spring — I wonder how long this one will stick around. It shows almost no wariness, so it would be great if it settles in for a long stay.

Crested Serpent Eagles are becoming more active ahead of the breeding season. I've been hearing them calling back and forth and often seeing them soaring over their territories.

Chinese Pond Herons are overwintering at several locations. Once they step into the grass they blend right in and become very hard to spot.

Eurasian Coots increased sharply after November began. Two years ago they were frequently attacked by Upland Buzzard. This season an Eastern Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, and Peregrine Falcon are all present, so it looks like it will be a tense winter for the coots.

For waders, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Long-toed Stint, Common Snipe, and Wood Sandpiper are all staying on.

I recorded my first Gadwall of the season. Tufted Duck and Eurasian Wigeon numbers are also building up at the dam.

コハクチョウ、カラムクドリ、オナガガモがまだ残っています。普通なら北へ渡っていないといけない時期ですが、のんびりしているようです。シロハラやアカハラなどもまだまだ残っています。シマアカモズも越冬個体や北上組が入り混じりたくさんいます。

春の渡り組としては今季初のホウロクシギ1羽とシマアジ5羽とアカガシラサギ2羽が現れました。アオサギは中継組の群れが沖合の岩礁で休憩していました。

昨日、1羽だったオジロトウネンは3羽に増えていました。同じ田んぼには警戒心ゆるゆるのアカガシラサギ。

ほぼ夏羽に変わった(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイやハクセキレイ、キセキレイなども田んぼで多く見かけます。

ことし1月から滞在のコハクチョウはまだいます。渡る気あるのかないのか分かりませんが、植え付けられた水稲の苗を食害していました…。^^; 田んぼの持ち主は「かわいそうだから追い払わない」とのこと。

石垣島のヤツガシラのシーズンが始まりました。きょうは仕事帰りにヤツガシラの鉄板ポイントへ寄り道。現場に到着して10分ほどで発見しました。芝生をつつきながらゴキブリの次から次に捕まえては口の中へ放り込んでいました。

コハクチョウはまだ滞在中。田植えが終わった田んぼを歩き回っています。農家の人に「苗は大丈夫?」と尋ねたら「食われるし踏まれる」とのこと。でも仕方ないので追い出すようなことはしないそうです。優しい農家のおじさんでした。^^

越冬ジョウビタキは渡って行ったのか数を減らしています。メスが少し残っている程度です。

昨年の12月中旬から越冬中のオオノスリ に久しぶりに遭遇。相変わらずでかくてかっこいいですね。警戒心が強めなので遠いです。^^;

同じく、 昨年の11月から越冬中のチュウヒ もオオノスリの近くで会えました。チュウヒは島内を広範囲に移動しており、自宅前のサトウキビ畑にもやってきます。

今年の1月から滞在しているコハクチョウ は少し大人びてきました。田植えがあちこちで始まり、落ち着きなく田んぼを転々としています。そろそろ北帰行でしょうか。

カンムリワシの幼鳥は、生まれて初めての試練の冬を無事に越しつつあります。成鳥に追われるので場所を転々とし、餌も生命を維持するぎりぎりしか取れていない感じですがなんとかやっているようです。

海岸には 先日からツクシガモとソリハシセイタカシギが滞在中 。仲は良くないようですが、付かず離れず同じ場所にいます。

サカツラガンはまだいます。昨年の12月2日に初認なので1カ月半の滞在です。たまに姿をくらましますが、しばらくするとお気に入りの場所に戻ってきます。

コハクチョウは1月10日からの滞在。当初の場所からは3キロほど離れた田んぼに移動していました。犬の散歩が嫌だったのでしょう。^^;

ホシハジロは八重山では少なく、今冬は昨年の12月2日に初認でこの個体で2羽目の確認です。

沖縄への飛来が少ないマガモがいました。昨年の12月上旬にも見ているのですが、写真が撮れたとのは今冬初。美しいオスでした。

数日前から滞在のコハクチョウも相変わらず同じ田んぼでのんびりと採餌。警戒心がないので散歩する人たちのアイドル的存在になっています^^

水路にはコガモやヒドリガモ、ハシビロガモなどがたくさん休んでいました。

昨日からコハクチョウが滞在中。警戒心のない個体でとなりでトラクターが走ってても全く気にしていませんでした。散歩の人などにも無反応。コハクチョウの餌があるのか心配です。

石垣島には現在、サカツラガン5羽の群れとヒシクイ、オオヒシクイ、マガン合わせて12羽の群れが滞在中なのでどちらかに合流すると安心なのですが…。

クロツラヘラサギは5羽がマングローブ内で休んでいました。今冬はここが彼らのねぐらのようです。

A juvenile hatched this year. Under normal circumstances it would spend the time with its family until the spring migration next year, but it must have become separated for some reason.

刈谷市の友人宅に遊びに行った帰り、Google Mapsで息子を遊ばせる場所を探してみると池のあるよさげな公園を発見。池の周りの遊歩道を散歩しながらドングリなどを集めていました。横目で池を見てカモはいるけど少ないなーなどと思っていると黒白のツートンカラーのあいつが目の前を横切っていくではありませんか!! 慌てて駐車場の車からカメラを取り撮影。ミコアイサが3羽も池に浮かんでいました。

遊歩道をさらに進むと6羽のミコアイサが休んでいて驚きました。同じ池のマガモやカンムリカイツブリ、コガモ、オシドリなどもランニングの人とか犬の散歩してる人とかいるのに平気なのね…。^^;

遊歩道にいたアオジにいたっては手が届きそうな距離までやってきました。

別の川ではコハクチョウが27羽いました。足環付きと首にGPSらしきものをぶら下げた個体がいましたが、距離があって詳細は不明。

河川敷にはエナガやホオジロ科、ツグミ、シロハラなどもおり、意外と賑やかでした。

12月31日から3泊4日で石垣島へ。 カンムリワシ、コハクチョウ編 と リュウキュウコノハズク編 と キンバト、カタグロトビ、ムクドリ科4種編 の三つに分けて掲載します。

2016年最後は、石垣島のバードウオッチングで終わりました。2017年は、石垣島のバードウオッチングで始動。^^ 石垣島へは、今年4回目となった。

17年は、酉年ということで、先ずはカンムリワシ。石垣島に滞在中、晴天に恵まれ気温も27度まで上昇。ビーチでは、観光客が泳いでいました。

カンムリワシの方も非常に活発に活動しているようで、滞在期間中の4日間で十数羽を観察できました。幼鳥は、2羽。

そんな年末らしからぬ暑い中、田んぼにはコハクチョウが2羽休憩しています。親鳥合わせて3羽でやってきたのですが、その親鳥は浜辺で衰弱死してしまいました。幸い、鳥インフルエンザは陰性だったとのこと。
