Ishigaki Island is lively with a mix of winter visitors that have not yet headed north, passage migrants stopping over, and resident birds active as breeding season gets underway.

Most conspicuous lately are Cinnamon Bitterns in full breeding season — I am encountering them in rice paddies all over the place. Tufted Duck and Eurasian Coot are among those that should have gone north but are still here; most have departed, but a few individuals appear to remain. I have also recorded snipe on passage.

I did some birdwatching during free time on a work trip to Yonaguni Island.

The timing was good — in a short while I was able to see Oriental Plover, Black Redstart, Citrine Wagtail, Common Hoopoe, Pin-tailed Snipe, and Swinhoe's Snipe. It was all thanks to the senior birders staying on the island!!

Seven Large Sand Plovers arrived early in the morning at the go-to spot on Yonaguni Island. I got the message while I was at work, so I was fidgeting.

First records this season of Black-tailed Godwit, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Striated Heron. Unless the weather turns rough, large waders like the Black-tailed Godwit don't come down to Ishigaki. Striated Heron is scarce on the island, so finding one felt like a bonus.

The Grey-headed Swamphen had become difficult to see for a while, but from this day it started showing well again. It may be because the Hen Harrier, which had been causing the poor appearance rate, was no longer around.

I had been kept waiting 40 minutes for a work appointment, so in frustration I stopped by the paddies — and there was the Swamphen, walking along the farm track.

I contacted several acquaintances who had come to Ishigaki specifically to see it, and we all got to watch it together. Hearing them say "I can see it!! The trip was worth it!!" made me happy too. ^^

I confirmed the first juvenile Grey-tailed Tattler of the season. Swinhoe's Snipe and Pin-tailed Snipe have crashed in numbers after the typhoon — almost none left. Snipe-watching will have to wait until the next wave arrives.

The Greater Painted-snipe chicks from the first brood of the year are fully grown but still seem to be moving around together as siblings. A second brood is underway and I am seeing adults with small chicks.

A flock of around 200 Eastern Cattle Egrets came into the paddies. Numbers will keep climbing.

The season's first Javan Pond Heron and White-browed Eastern Yellow Wagtail have arrived. Javan Pond Herons will trickle through from here on, while the Eastern Yellow Wagtails will suddenly surge in numbers.

This year's Cinnamon Bitterns appear to be dispersing; individuals in the same area have been thinning out.

Three juvenile Cinnamon Bitterns were in rice paddies in the same area — likely three siblings. A juvenile Purple Heron was nearby. In the forested hills, Malayan Night Herons are breeding; two fledglings appear to have left their parents.

Ruddy Kingfishers are becoming more numerous. On Ishigaki they can be seen through October.

While searching for Ruddy Kingfishers I came across some noisy Ishigaki Tits. One was carrying food, so I watched from a distance and saw it disappear into a tree hollow — evidently nesting. I confirmed breeding at two locations.

The paddies are lively too, with Chinese Pond Herons in breeding plumage and Eastern Cattle Egrets adding to the bustle.

One Javan Pond Heron and three Chinese Pond Herons are staying on — all four are always together.

Oriental Pratincoles are increasing. On this day, nine were resting in the paddies, taking a break from the rain.

A Siberian Yellow Wagtail was on a paddy bund. The distance and the grass obscuring the bird made observation difficult; getting a few photos was the best I could manage. A Siberian Pipit was nearby.

The wintering Common Snipe have all but disappeared, though migrants are trickling through. Swinhoe's Snipe should be arriving soon.

Four Garganey turned up. If there's a duck that says spring on Ishigaki, it's the Garganey.

The Chinese Pond Herons that have been wintering since last year — about four of them. One individual appears to be a Javan Pond Heron. When the tractors started turning over the paddies, they joined the Eastern Cattle Egrets and took part in the attendant feeding.

Purple Herons can be found as young birds from last year as well as adults. The adults are in nuptial colour and looking particularly fine.

Wader numbers in the paddies have dropped considerably; just scattered Common Greenshank, Common Redshank, Green Sandpiper, and Black-winged Stilt. The wintering Common Snipe seem to have headed north, and almost none remain. Looking forward to the arrival of passage birds.

例年、幼鳥の到着が一番乗りのアカアシシギ。今季初となる幼鳥を確認しました。 昨年は7月27日に初認 なので、例年と同時期の到着ということになります。

ただ、ことしは幼鳥一番乗りはなんと 7月20日のセイタカシギ 。いつもは8月下旬以降の到着なので島内で繁殖した可能性もあるのかな。

ほかはいつものメンバーのアオアシシギ、タカブシギ、ヒバリシギなどが滞在中。

戻り組のアマサギも増えていました。

昨年の秋から今年にかけてオス3羽、メス1羽を確認したヨシガモ。シーズンで4羽も見るのは、沖縄ではかなり珍しいです。オカヨシガモのメス4羽と行動を共にしていました。

タシギは越冬組に渡り組が加わり多少賑やかになってきましたが、タシギ以外のジシギの確認はまだです。

繁殖シーズンに入っているタマシギが数日間、同じ草むらの中にいます。巣作り中なのでしょうか。

ズグルミゾゴイも繁殖シーズン到来で婚姻色が出だしています。

ハクセキレイも移動が活発で、20羽程度の群れをいくつか見ました。ホオジロハクセキレイも混じっています。

ツグミも増えたり減ったりで入れ替わりが激しい模様。春の渡りが始まっているようです。

水の張られた田んぼにはセイタカシギやアマサギ、アオサギが飛来していました。こちらも春の渡りの最中だと思われます。

今季初となるウズラシギを確認。ツバメチドリは子育てを終えて巣立ったヒナをくわえた30羽ほどの群れが田んぼにいました。

ムラサキサギは親子で餌取り。巣立ちビナは親鳥に餌をねだるもほとんど相手にされていませんでした。

アカアシシギは幼鳥を含めて数を増やしています。タカブシギはかなりの数が渡ってきました。タマシギは見やすくなっており、あちこちで出会います。

アマサギは、渡り途中と思われる20〜30羽ほどの群れを見るようになりました。

昨年と同じエリア で今年もズグロミゾゴイの繁殖がありました。ヒナは独り立ちしているようでした。 こちらのズグロミゾゴイのヒナ たちは巣立ちまでもう少しかかりそうです。

ムラサキサギも幼鳥を見る機会が増えてきました。各地で子育てが終わっているようです。

バンの繁殖はほとんど終わって、幼鳥を見る機会が増えているのですが、まだ小さなヒナを抱えたペアもいました。

リュウキュウアカショウビンは今季九つ目となる巣を発見。カラスが近くと親鳥が体当たりで追い払っていました。

今年3月に見つけたけがをしたアマサギに久しぶりに出会いました。やはり治ることはなく、飛べないようです。

Canon のEOS-1D X Mark IIからSONYのα9IIに乗り換えてちょうど1年たちましたが、SONY初のプロ機となるα1が出たので買い換えました。発売日翌日に到着し、本日、少しだけ試し撮りしてきました。

α1での初撮りは、この時季の石垣島らしくヤツガシラ。きょうは2カ所で2羽の飛来を確認。ISO1600で撮影しましたがα9IIよりノイズは増えますね。5000万画素のハイレゾ機なのでしかたないです…。

次は暗い林道にトラツグミ。林道が狭くまともに撮れない状況でなんとか草の向こうにいる姿を撮影。手前の草にピントを取られることなく撮れました。

公園のペアのズグロミゾゴイは婚姻色で顔が真っ青に染まっていました。鳥瞳AFはしっかりと効いています。

ムラサキサギ、アマサギの飛翔時にも瞳AFは余裕で機能しました。若干、ムラサキサギは迷いましたが、アマサギの方は飛ぼうが歩き回ろうがしっかり目にピントが来ています。

α1の鳥瞳AFは、おそらくカワセミを重点的に学習させてあるようで、以下の写真のような米粒ぐらいの大きさの被写体でも一瞬でしっかりと目を検出していました。公園とかでカワセミ撮ってる金持ち団塊世代がターゲットなのでしょうか?^^;

シギやチドリは苦手なようで、遠いと瞳AFは使えませんが、それなりに近い被写体ならしっかりと目を検出していました。不思議なことにセイタカシギは近くても全く目を検出しません。学習が足りないと思われますので、新しいファームウエアに期待ですね。

カルガモやイシガキヒヨドリはバシッと目に反応していました。

今冬、何羽目かのソリハシセイタカシギ。沖縄では珍鳥なモズも飛来しました。しかもうれしいことに初列風切の基部に白斑がないタイプでした。^^

アカガシラサギは昨年からの越冬個体。水路のカモはいつものメンバーで田んぼではタシギ、セイタカシギ、アカアシシギとこちらもいつもと同じメンバーです。

カワウとキンクロハジロ、ダイゼン幼鳥をそれぞれ今季初確認しました。

ダイゼンは成鳥が現れてから遅れること2カ月で幼鳥が到着しました。海岸でシギ、チドリを見ていると海上から黒い大きな鳥が登場。2羽のカワウでした。

水路ではコガモやハシビロガモの群れの中にキンクロハジロが1羽いました。

タゲリやマガンも先日から滞在中です。

相変わらず、秋の渡りで野鳥たちの入れ替わりが激しい石垣島です。今季3羽目となるソリハシセイタカシギのほか、アカアシシギやセイタカシギ、アオアシシギ、ヒバリシギ、タカブシギなど田んぼに赴けば必ずシギたちが出迎えてくれます。ハマシギは8羽の群れが入っていました。

ムラサキサギは幼鳥、成鳥と出会う機会は増えています。リュウキュウヨシゴイも子育てが終わり、田んぼや水路をのぞけば大抵、見つかります。

アマサギやチュウダイサギは渡りが最盛期を迎えており、数百羽の群れが現れたりします。こちらも入れ替わりが激しいです。

先週まで大量にいたツバメチドリは数を減らしましたが、クロハラアジサシは相変わらず島内のあちこちで逗留しています。

新型コロナで県外へ出られないので、シルバーウイーク中は2泊3日で与那国島へ家族旅行に行ってきました。

移動途中、林道や海岸線などをちょっとだけ鳥見。秋の渡りには若干早かったのと、2日目まで南風が吹き続けていたので与那国らしい鳥は出せませんでした…。^^;

2日目の夕方から北寄りの風になり、前日まで全くいなかったアカハラダカは林道などでたくさん見られました。西崎で観光していると南側の海上から目線の高さでアカハラダカが単独で島へ飛び込んできました。アマサギやコサギの群れは北風が吹き出した3日目に幾度となく海から与那国島へ到着する群れを見ました。40羽から最大で100羽ほどの群れでやってきました。

ブッポウソウは2日目の夕方に1羽、3日目にもう1羽を確認しました。八重山のブッポウソウはだいたいこの時期で石垣島でも1羽出ていました。

この時期、島内で特に目につくのはエゾビタキとシマアカモズ とツメナガセキレイで、何羽見たかわかりません。ツメナガセキレイは珍しい亜種も期待したのですが、全てマミジロツメナガセキレイでした。

東崎では、まさに到着したばかりというチュウジシギが岬の先端にいました。

ライファーとなるアリスイも確認。沖縄ではなかなか見ることができず「やばいの見つけた」というと息子が「長芋見つけた?」と聞き返し3歳児のかわいさ全開です。^^

沖縄県が設置したウリミバエの不妊虫放飼カゴ周りにはサンコウチョウやキマユムシクイ、キセキレイ、エゾビタキ、ツバメ、タイワンヒヨドリなどが集まっていました。

林道ではトケン3羽を見たのですがどれも飛び去る後ろ姿だけなので同定できず…。カラムクドリは十数羽の群れ、サンショウクイも数羽の群れを何度か見ました。ムシクイは子連れでの撮影は厳しいですね…。^^;

そして与那国島で一番の成果はハリオシギの死体を拾ったことです。^^ このハリオシギは featherbase にて 羽根標本(Exhibit #5698) になりました。

台風通過後で田んぼにはいつもの数倍の鳥たちが集まっていました。

田んぼを午後6時から1時間ほど回った結果、特に増えたのがセイタカシギで170、その次はタカブシギで150、アカアシシギ50、アオアシシギ40、トウネン20ほどです。ヒバリシギも多いのですが、なにせ小さいので50まで数えたところでギブアップしました…。^^; さんざん載せているので写真は省略で…。

そんな中、1羽だけいたのが今季初のオグロシギ。春と秋には定期的に石垣島を中継していきますが、数は多くないです。コアオアシシギも1羽だけ。こちらはまもなく、幼鳥も含めて増えて来ると思われます。

台風が来てこれだけ一気に増えるということは、天気がいいと石垣島に寄らずに通過していくシギやチドリの群も多いのでしょうね。
