Among the wintering warblers, Manchurian Bush Warblers can no longer be found, while more and more Japanese Bush Warblers are beginning to practise their song.

The Chinese Pond Heron that has been here since last autumn is still in its winter plumage as before. In the same paddy, a few Temminck's Stints arrived on spring passage. Common Snipe from the overwintering population were scattered, apparently disrupted by rice-planting and other farm work.

The Minister of Defense was visiting Yonaguni Island, so off I went on another work trip. I managed a little birdwatching in between duties. ^^

Driving through the farmland, I could hear Siberian Rubythroat, Ryukyu Robin, Manchurian Bush Warbler, Japanese Bush Warbler, Arctic Warbler, and Emberiza buntings calling. The density is considerably higher than on Ishigaki Island. It was a short visit, but I enjoyed it a great deal.

Common Hoopoes are being reported from all over the island. It looks like a decent start to the season.

The Rosy Starling that has been wintering since last year is gradually moulting. I'm hoping it will stay as long as possible, but I have a feeling it may move on soon…

Lately, a fairly large flock of Red-billed Starlings has been coming to the car park at my workplace. They appear to be feeding on the fruits of the planted ironwood trees.

A completely fearless White's Thrush turned up — spotted and pointed out to me by a friend visiting from Akita Prefecture. I had several encounters with White's Thrush from late last year into early January, but after that they vanished. This individual seems to have stopped in on spring passage.

Japanese Bush Warblers have increased sharply, just as the Manchurian Bush Warblers have completely disappeared. I'm hearing subsong frequently these days. Little Buntings and Red-throated Pipits — whether they're on passage or moving around within the island I can't say — are fluctuating, with numbers going up and down.

Japanese Bush Warblers are becoming noticeably more active. Along the coastal woodland, several seem to be gathering as if preparing for migration. I'm also hearing their clumsy subsong.

石垣島ではさまざまな野鳥が越冬します。その中で観察しにくいのが小鳥たち。鳴き声をよく耳にするところでは、コムシクイ、キマユムシクイ、ノゴマ、ウグイスですが、どれもやぶの中にいるので見るのも大変です。

ムクドリサイズだとギンムクドリ、カラムクドリ、ホシムクドリ、バライロムクドリ、ツグミ、シロハラ、アカハラあたりが越冬しています。ムクドリの仲間は電線などに止まり鳴き声も騒がしいので見つけやすいのですが、行動範囲が広いのでだめなときは全く出会えません…。^^;

アカハラの群れが雨の中、水浴びしていました。近くではシロハラも水浴び。アカハラの水浴びを見ているとウグイスも出てきました。

ムギマキ情報をもらい見にいくも空振り。仕方ないので近くを探索してみると藪の中からノゴマの地鳴きが聞こえてくるではありませんか。移動する影が見えるので少し待ってみるとなんとか写真に納められる位置に一瞬だけ出てきてくれました。ノゴマは先日の与那国島で地鳴きを何度も聞いていたので思わぬところで役に立ちました。

ノゴマはウグイスと付かず離れずで一緒に移動しているようでした。ウグイスは目の前まで出てきてくれました。この時期、石垣島ではウグイス、カラフトウグイスが見られます。

リュウキュウキビタキは餌場にしている場所に何度も出てきました。おそらく同じ個体。

豊崎の公園にホシムクドリが40羽ほど群れていました。なんで今日はこんなに群れているのかと思ったら、近くにある与根の公園にハヤブサが入ったらかのようです。そちらの公園にはホシムクドリとムクドリが1羽ずつ。他は何もいませんでした。与根でよく群れているホシムクドリたちが豊崎に避難してきたようです。^^;

糸満の工場地帯にある公園ではウグイスやシロハラを見ることができました。相変わらずシロハラは警戒心が強い。

11月も終わりに近づき、ジョウビタキやビンズイ、タヒバリ、シマアカモズ、ウグイスなど増えてきました。警戒心が強く、写真に収められませんでしたが、シロハラとマミチャジナイも確認しました。ツグミの仲間は、夜、耳を済ましていると姿は見えませんが、鳴き声で渡っているのが分かります。

友人は、アトリも撮影していましたが、私が現場に着いたころには移動したのか見つけられませんでした。

昨年の10月末に見た部分白化のキジバト は全く同じ場所にいました。ここに留鳥としているのか、それともどこかから移動してきたのか…。

那覇のど真ん中、新都心公園にマミチャジナイが飛来しました。シロハラやアカハラなどとアカギの実を食っていた。私もかじってみたけど青臭くて食えたもんじゃない…。^^;

ウグイスは地鳴きしながら藪の中を移動していました。結構な数がいるのですが、写真が撮れる場所にはなかなか出てこないですね。

シジュウカラは、松の実を足で挟んで器用に食っていた。

ツグミもジョウビタキも沖縄本島で見る機会は非常に少ないです。今回を含めて、この冬に見たツグミは3個体目、ジョウビタキは4個体目です。石垣島では両種とも本土よりは少ないながらもそれなりに越冬するのですが、ここ沖縄本島では希少種。^^; シロハラは都市の公園だろうが山の中だろうが畑だろうがどこにでもいます。

ウグイスは、数は少なくはないのですが、藪の中にいることが多いので撮りにくい部類。今日見つけたポイントは、林縁に堆肥が積んであり小さな虫が発生しているようでジョウビタキ、ウグイスのほかにもハクセキレイやツメナガセキレイなども集まっていた。

リュウキュウサンコウチョウが巣作りをしていました。作り始めて2〜3日です。 先日のリュウキュウアカショウビンも巣穴 をまだ掘っている最中のようで、木の屑が増えていました。また、鳴き声も聞こえました。

林道では、ウグイスが鳴いていました。かなり近い感じだったので、茂みをよーく見てみるといました。声はあちこちで聞くのですが、撮影できたのは初めてです。^^

以前見つけたセッカの営巣は、草が刈られて巣が丸見えになっていました。誰かが故意に切ったのか、農家の人が刈って巣があることに気づいて途中でやめたのか。雛は5羽孵化していました。昨日ぐらいに孵化したものと思われます。巣立ちは5月20日前後と思われます。

昨日見つけたズアカアオバトの巣作りもまだ続いていました。かなり見えにくい場所ですが引き続き観察してみようと思います。

帰り道、キジバトの巣立ち雛が道路の真ん中を歩いています。危ないので、捕まえて道路脇のゴルフ場の敷地に放しました。しばらく見ていると親鳥と合流できました。^^
