Made a circuit of the estuary for the first time in a while. Three Red Knots, Great Knot, Bar-tailed Godwit, Far Eastern Curlew, Terek Sandpiper, Grey-tailed Tattler, and Greater Sand Plover were all observed. A Pied Avocet had turned up in the paddies.

We held the Ishigaki-jima Snipe Camp again this season — five years running, thanks to everyone who has taken part. This time there was one participant. We met at 9 a.m. and spent the day watching snipe until around 4 p.m.
Because we held it about a month later than usual, Pin-tailed Snipe numbers were low — only 2 individuals out of several dozen snipe seen. Swinhoe's Snipe were the most numerous and are at peak, so almost all were juveniles. Common Snipe juveniles are now arriving to join the adults, and numbers should peak soon.

First Grey-tailed Tattler juvenile of the season, Great Knot, and Temminck's Stint juvenile were all seen. Common Greenshank juveniles are increasing. While watching the snipe, a Ruddy-breasted Crake appeared — the first in a while.

While watching a group of around ten Swinhoe's Snipes, a snipe appeared in the grass. It was a typical Pin-tailed Snipe juvenile, so I followed it with binoculars hoping to get a look at the tail feathers — and it bathed rather sooner than I expected. ^^
With shorebirds on the increase, I spent the entire day searching for waders. The result: starting with Asian Dowitcher, I recorded Pectoral Sandpiper, Little Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Pin-tailed Snipe, Greater Sand Plover, and more — 21 species of waders in total. Seeing this many species in a single day is one of the great pleasures of this time of year. ^^

Stopped to check the coast on my way past and scanned for sandpipers and plovers. The tide was wrong and everything was far off. ^^;
Great Knots arrived in a small flock.
I went to Nagoya for a post-operative check-up after cervical spine surgery and did some birding while I was there. After three years of trying, I finally got to see Western Sandpiper. I also observed Broad-billed Sandpiper, Great Knot, and Red-necked Stint.
Along with the Western Sandpiper, Baikal Teal and Japanese Wagtail were lifers for me.
The Little Stint was at first sitting and resting in a hollow, but there was something about it that felt slightly off. ^^ Still, once it mixes into a flock of Red-necked Stints it gets difficult.
石垣島をかすりもしなかった台風14号の通過後、少しだけ海岸と田んぼの巡回。今季初確認のオバシギが2羽のほかはほぼいつものメンバーでした。
友人から、ホウロクシギとダイシャクシギがいると連絡をもらいましたが、回る時間はなし!! やはり飛翔力の秀でた大型シギは台風が当たらないと石垣島にはなかなか降りないですね。

春の渡り中のシギやチドリを台風2号が直撃したため、飛翔力が高く天候が良ければ石垣島に降りずにノンストップで行ってしまうような大型のシギが多く降り立ちました。また、波が高いことから沖合の岩礁での休憩ができず、いつもより多くのシギとチドリが海岸に身を寄せていました。
この日、一番の収穫はコオバシギ。スポッターさんに教えてもらって現場に出向いたのですが、散歩の人に飛ばされてロストしたとのこと。近くを探してみると200メートルほど西の海岸に降りていました。
別の海岸にはオオソリハシシギ。こちらはノンストップで1万1000キロを飛べるとあって天候に恵まれた年は会えませんが、今回は台風の影響で4羽が飛来しました。
ホウロクシギも台風の影響が出だしてから立て続けに確認。この日は2羽が砂浜で採餌していました。
沖縄本島や宮古島では多くみられますが、なぜか石垣島では少ないチュウシャクシギも到着。オバシギ3羽とハマシギは数日前から場所を変えつつ滞在している模様。キアシシギは一気に数を増やして30羽ほどをカウント。ダイゼンは越冬組は抜けて渡り組が到着。キョウジョシギ、ムナグロ、アオアシシギ、メダイチドリなども台風で足止めを食らっていますが、これからどんどん北上していきます。

多忙につき、4月16日までの3日分のバードウオッチングの成果の一部をまとめてご紹介します。今季初となるチュウジシギをやっと確認。後日、追記します。
情報もらっても見に行っていない鳥もいますので、そのあたりは割愛します…。^^; 以下の写真の通り、田んぼや海岸には日替わりで渡り鳥たちがやってきています。この時季の石垣島は、とっても楽しいですよ。

ブロンズトキは毎日のようにハヤブサに追われて落ち着きません。群れの数も19羽から16羽に減りました。食われたか逸れたかしたのでしょう。滞在場所も以前とは違う場所になりました。
海岸にはシギやチドリが日替わりで出たり入ったりを繰り返しています。メダイチドリやキョウジョシギ、トウネンあたりがレギュラーメンバーでその合間にサルハマシギやミユビシギ、オバシギなどが渡ってきます。キリアイも珍しく近くで見ることができました。夏羽のハシブトアジサシも河口で飛び回っています。
The flock of Glossy Ibises has been relentlessly chased by a Peregrine Falcon for the past several days. This individual was struck on the neck but managed to survive.
オバシギ、ハマシギ、コアオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、トウネンが今季初として確認できました。キリアイもいましたが、撮影はかなわず…。明日、再挑戦したいと思います。
石垣島の春の渡りは活発に動いており、同じ田んぼや海岸でも翌日にはごそっとメンバーが変わっています。
海岸は環境の変化がないからか、毎年、安定して渡りが楽しめるいいスポットです。^^

近所の大浜海岸にオバシギ3羽が飛来していました。海岸を歩きながら貝などを捕まえると丸呑みにしていた。
近くにはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリなどがちらほら。日替わりで鳥が入れ替わっているようで、数も多かったり少なかったり。
農耕地には、セキレイの仲間やシマアカモズがいます。春の渡りのセキレイたちは増減が激しいです。
家の目の前が海岸なのに石垣島に帰ってきてから仕事が忙しくてなかなか時間を割いて鳥を見ることができません…。^^;

春の渡りで越冬地から繁殖地へ北上して行く途中の野鳥たちが毎日のように入れ替わり立ち替わりで沖縄へ立ち寄ってくれます。
人参畑には、ツバメチドリが6羽、海岸には、オバシギ6羽、ホウロクシギ2羽など色々なシギとチドリが羽を休めに舞い降ります。オバシギを6羽の群れで見たのは初めて。大抵1羽か2羽ぐらいでした。
ホウロクシギは、オバシギを撮り終えて帰ろうとしたら鳴き声が聞こえるので双眼鏡で探してみると2羽が餌探しをしていた。今年初のホウロクシギでした。
キアシシギやキョウジョシギ、セイタカシギ、ダイゼン、ムナグロなども夕日に照らされながら次の渡りへ備えて餌探しに勤しんでいた。
Happily, the Great Knots were in a flock of six. They have changed into beautiful breeding plumage.
小笠原諸島から昨日帰ってきて、米須海岸に行ってきました。
EOS-1D X Mark II も届いたのでテストがてらクロハラアジサシやミサゴの飛びもの。オバシギ、ウズラシギ、コアオアシシギなどを観察してきました。やっぱり沖縄がいいね!!
From the EOS-1D X Mark II onward, all-point autofocus works at f/8, so I gave it a test. I photographed White-winged Terns flying around the coast. Conditions were good, but the tracking was spot-on.
佐賀県にあるラムサール条約湿地の「東よか干潟」に行ってきました。鳥屋の間では、「大授搦(だいじゅがらみ)」と呼ぶそうです。シチメンソウの紅葉には少し早かったですが、午前の大潮満潮に当たり、狭くなった干潟に飛来、密集するヘラシギ、ホウロクシギ、ダイシャクシギ、ダイゼン、ハマシギ、メダイチドリなどシギチの姿が観察できました。
すばらしい干潟でしたので、春の渡りの時期にもう一度足を運んでみたいですね。^^
There was a single Spoon-billed Sandpiper among a large roosting flock of shorebirds. I had to scan for ages with binoculars before finally finding it. ^^ When I checked at home later, I found that this Spoon-billed Sandpiper had been first recorded three days earlier on September 12th. Good timing. ^^
It was very distant, so heavy cropping. ^^ ;
