The Common Ringed Plover that appeared in early September was still present — three weeks into its stay. It seems to be moving widely around the island, between the rice paddies and the coast. The Javan Pond Heron is also on an extended visit.

The first Pacific Golden Plover juvenile of the season has also arrived. When these appear, the wader migration is in its final stages.

Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe numbers fluctuate daily as residents mix with birds moving through.

A Common Ringed Plover — a rare bird on Ishigaki Island — has turned up. It's only the second time I've seen one on the island. It was associating with a flock of Little Ringed Plovers. A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper, the first of the season, also arrived. I had noted it a few days earlier, but today I managed to get photographs.

The rice fields have a true migration-season feel, with Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint, Black-winged Stilt, and Red-necked Stint all coming and going.

The Kentish Plover was in transition from breeding to non-breeding plumage.

年末から名古屋の実家に帰省したついでに噂のミズカキチドリを見てきました。

現場の田んぼに着くとハヤブサがドバトを食っている最中で、目当ての鳥はいないかと焦りましたが、コチドリ数羽とハジロコチドリ数羽が隣の水が張られた田んぼで呑気に群れていました。双眼鏡で一羽ずつ確認していくとミズカキチドリらしき個体を発見。足指の間の蹼が写った写真も得ることができました。

この個体についてはミズカキチドリかハジロコチドリかでさまざまな意見があるようですが、中趾と内趾の間に小さな蹼が認められるのと中趾と外趾の間の蹼がハジロコチドリより明らかに大きいこと、1月の時点でくちばしの付け根に赤みが残っていること、過眼線が口角まで届いていないことなどからミズカキチドリだと思われます。

また、沖縄ではハジロコチドリも希少なので数羽が同じ田んぼに群れていることに感動しました。

水の張られていない田んぼではニュウナイスズメやケリ、カワラヒワなどが群れていました。

帰り道、コミミズクが頭上を飛び去りましたが、すでに県道に出ており、駐車することができず残念ながら撮り逃しました。名古屋市内にもコミミズクがいるなんてびっくり。
