A Greater White-fronted Goose has been present for several days now, but for some reason the guide is apparently calling it a Greylag Goose. To me it is clearly a juvenile Greater White-fronted Goose… ^^; A juvenile Tundra Swan has also arrived on its own. On Iriomote, two Tundra Swans and a Siberian Crane are staying as well.

Multiple Pied Avocets have turned up across the island. That day I tallied six birds in total — a group of four and singles at two separate locations. In the paddies, Northern Lapwings, Pacific Golden Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Little Ringed Plovers, Common Greenshanks, Common Redshanks, Wood Sandpipers, Dunlins, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers and Black-winged Stilts are all wintering.

This season I had already confirmed the subspecies leucopsis and ocularis White Wagtails, but this day I was finally able to see the subspecies alba White Wagtail. That is pretty much how it goes every year.

A Hen Harrier was hunting right in front of me. I could not tell what it was after, but startled Common Pheasants kept flushing repeatedly and the harrier did not seem to catch anything… ^^; My daughter, who was watching with me, was thrilled — when the Hen Harrier banked sharply she could actually hear the wind cutting through its wings. ^^

In the channels there were wintering Black-faced Spoonbills, in the paddies several Chinese Pond Herons, and we had Saunders's Gulls and Black-headed Gulls flying together — all in all a fun day of birdwatching for the kids.

About five days on Yonaguni for work. Managed a little birdwatching in the spare time. Around Yonaguni Airport: two Upland Buzzards, an Eastern Buzzard, a Hen Harrier, a Peregrine Falcon and a Common Kestrel, apparently hunting small birds in the grass along the runway.

Pale Thrushes were present in large numbers across the island — flocks of thirty or more in the best spots. A few Brown-headed Thrushes were also seen. Pale Thrushes and Brown-headed Thrushes were concentrated mainly in the northern part of the island from Sonai to Kubura, while Dusky Thrushes were conspicuous in the south from Minamimakiba to Hikawa.

Little Buntings, Eastern Yellow Wagtails, Red-throated Pipits and Daurian Redstarts were all holding on through the strong winds. At Kubura fishing port, two Black-tailed Gulls and four Black-headed Gulls were staying over.

Three Pied Avocets have been staying for several days. Single birds have also been found elsewhere, so they may have dispersed from the flock of eleven that arrived in November.

The first Black-tailed Godwit of the season has turned up. Also wintering in the paddies: Common Greenshanks, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers, Dunlins, Common Snipes, Black-winged Stilts, Common Redshanks and Wood Sandpipers.

While watching the Oriental Stork, a Black Bittern flew into view, so I searched for where it had landed — and a Baillon's Crake appeared. ^^; It was a wary individual that ducked straight into the grass at the slightest disturbance. The habitat looks good, so it might stick around.

The Oriental Stork was a ringed individual. ID number "J0701", apparently hatched on 31 March this year in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture. It had also been observed in Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture, a week earlier. It stayed on Ishigaki for several days before crossing to Iriomote.

Two Pied Avocets are still present. Whether they are part of the flock of eleven that arrived on 6 November is unknown.

Encounters with juvenile Crested Serpent Eagles have been increasing. On this day I found the previously recorded "No. 7" and a new individual. With the second-crop rice harvest now underway, it is becoming a good season to watch Crested Serpent Eagles. This season's sugarcane harvest is scheduled to start around 6 December.

The Collared Kingfisher on Ishigaki has been staying a long time. Its daily routine is settled, and it really feels like it will see the new year in. Caspian Terns and Black-headed Gulls are also visiting the beach where the Collared Kingfisher is found.

In nearby rice paddies, the first Taiga Bean Geese of the season were confirmed — a flock of six. Chinese Pond Herons, Red Collared Doves and Common Starlings are also present. It is all right on the doorstep, so there is plenty to enjoy there during the times when the Collared Kingfisher is not showing.

Around seven Pied Avocets are staying at several sites. Water levels in the island's paddies are low, so shorebirds are scarce.

One Pheasant-tailed Jacana arrived. Summer records of Pheasant-tailed Jacana fall roughly between late May and the end of June.

A Red Collared Dove also turned up — numbers have been low this season. Two years ago was a banner year, with flocks of twenty-plus birds coming through, but last autumn and this season have been quiet.

The Whiskered Tern peak seems to have passed, but birds are still trickling through. An out-of-season Black-headed Gull was also noted. It appears to be a different individual from last week's bird.

A look at the terns around Ishigaki Island over the past few days. After Typhoon No. 2 passed, a flock of Whiskered Terns and White-winged Terns arrived. Among roughly twenty Whiskered Terns, three White-winged Terns were mixed in.

Little Terns had been incubating at Painu Hamachō, but with the deployment of PAC3, more than thirty vehicles moved in and that was the end of it. As it's early in the breeding season, I hope they can find somewhere else to nest… We should always keep in mind that human activity affects other living things.

A Gull-billed Tern has been present for several days now. It is completely unafraid — it kept on fishing even with children splashing and making noise nearby.

I couldn't get a photo, but I also had visual confirmation of several Black-naped Terns. I expect their numbers will build from here as they come to breed on Ishigaki. No Roseate Terns confirmed yet.

Two Pied Avocets have arrived. They may be individuals already wandering around the island — four more Pied Avocets have also been confirmed elsewhere.

The Common Crane is also in wintering mode. At first it was extremely wary, but now not at all. ^^

A Eurasian Spoonbill is also staying on — a friendly individual. Wintering waders are showing up as well.

メジロガモ3羽、沖縄的珍鳥のスズガモ2羽が滞在中。ホシハジロは八重山では珍しく、沖縄本島ではそこそこ見られます。ヘラサギ1羽が島内を移動しつつ滞在中でユリカモメも1〜8羽が増えたり減ったりしながら逗留しています。

田んぼのシギは、タシギやアカアシシギ、アオアシシギ、クサシギ、タカブシギあたりが滞在中です。

忘れていた10月の保護個体のアカオネッタイチョウも2カ月遅れで掲出しておきます。^^;

ジャワアカガシラサギと思われる個体が長期滞在中。胸の縦斑がアカガシラサギに比べると薄く見え、ジャワアカガシラサギに比べるとちょっと濃いめという感じです。個人的にはジャワアカガシラサギでいいと思うのですが、地元では意見が割れています。

ソリハシセイタカシギも長逗留。たまにいなくなるけど、1日か2日で元の田んぼにもどってきます。

今季初のユリカモメが到着しました。カモメの仲間ではユリカモメだけが毎年、確認できます。沖縄本島まで行くとユリカモメに加えてズグロカモメも見られるのですが、石垣島にはほとんど来ないです。

オオハシシギも1カ月以上、同じ田んぼで越冬中。このまま春までいてくれたら換羽が観察できるのですが…いかに…。

天気の悪い日が続く石垣島です。鳥たちも島内では移動があるのですが、新たに何か入ってきそうな気配はないですねー。^^;

近所の河口と田んぼを少し回ってきましたが、ほとんどいつものメンバーでした。

オニアジサシは越冬モードなのですが、河口と田んぼを行ったり来たりしているようです。河口にはダイゼンが増えてきました。ムナグロも少々。ミユビシギは2羽が越冬モードです。メダイチドリとオオメダイチドリは日によっていたりいなかったり。ユリカモメは3羽ほどが島内をぐるぐるしています。

たまには時間を気にせず鳥を見たいのですが、きょうも仕事の移動中に田んぼで少しだけバードウオッチング。

今季初ではないですが、2カ月ぶりのソリハシセイタカシギが登場。警戒心のない個体ですが、強風が吹き付けるので撮りにくかったー。

田んぼのオニアジサシは、少しだけ場所を変えて休んでいました。どうも餌場はダムっぽいです。

強風と雨の中、ミサゴが畔で食事をしていました。草が茂って何を食っているのかは不明。

今まで知らなかった沈砂池を発見したのでのぞいてみるとキンクロハジロやハシビロガモ、コガモ、カワウなどがいました。石垣島内では大きめの沈砂池なので今後、何か入るかもしれません。

稲刈りが終わった田んぼではオナガガモの幼鳥たちがカルガモと採餌していました。カルガモについて回っていました。安心するのでしょうか。

シギ、チドリはアカアシシギやアオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、クサシギ、タシギ、タゲリ、コチドリ、シロチドリ、メダイチドリなどが越冬中。

今季はユリカモメとの出会いが多く、ここ数日で4羽を観察。漁港にはウミネコらしきもいたそうですが、私は見られず…。

ムネアカタヒバリやハクセキレイ、キセキレイ、ツメナガセキレイたちは激しい北風が吹き付けるので草陰なでに避難している個体が多かったです。

久しぶりにオニアジサシ。1羽だけの飛来でした。

ユリカモメは3羽が田んぼに入りました。八重山では定期的に入るカモメの仲間といえばユリカモメとズグロカモメぐらいです。

ツクシガモ2羽とユリカモメ数羽滞在中。どちらも南国石垣島では珍しいです。

昼休みに田んぼをのぞいてみるとベニバトのオス2羽と幼鳥1羽がいました。今年は例年になくベニバトの多い年です。秋から途絶えることなくあちこちの畑で確認できています。

同じ田んぼにハチジョウツグミも入っていました。シロハラ、アカハラは大変数が多くどこでも見られます。ツグミも増えてきました。ツグミより北に繁殖分布するハチジョウツグミも確認できるようになりました。

今日のタヒバリの仲間はムネアカタヒバリとタヒバリ、マミジロタヒバリの順に数が多い感じですが、日によって変わるので入れ替わりは激しいようです。

近くの漁港にはユリカモメが飛来しており、田んぼに水浴びにくる個体が観察できました。

ほかにもサカツラガンやヒシクイ、マガン、ブラックサシバ、アオシギ、ソリハシセイタカシギ、アカガシラサギなども元気に越冬中です。^^

沖縄本島に1週間前、ソリハシセイタカシギが入っているので、石垣島でももうすぐかなと探していたらいました。^^

田んぼにはアオアシシギやコアオアシシギ、アカアシシギ、ハマシギ、ヒバリシギなど。

数日前ですが、ホシハジロも初確認。単独の飛来でした。

ユリカモメは3羽のうち、1羽が油爆していました。

与那国島出張で仕事の合間に少しだけ探鳥してきました。観察できたのは45種と少なめ…。

小鳥が大変多く、コホオアカとジョウビタキが特に多かったです。ついでマミジロタヒバリ、ムネアカタヒバリ、ハクセキレイ、シロハラ、シマアカモズ、ノビタキの順。ルリビタキとハチジョウツグミ、　シベリアアオジは1個体ずつ撮影できました。

撮影できなかったけど数が多かったのが、アカヒゲとノゴマ。ノゴマは2回ほど目の前に現れたのですが、狭い道路で一瞬の出来事で撮影できず。アカヒゲは地鳴きをあちこちで聞きました。クロツグミやミヤマホオジロ、ウグイスあたりは粘れば撮れそうです。

猛禽類はノスリやサシバ、チョウゲンボウ、ハヤブサ、ミサゴなどを確認。ノスリのみ撮影。カタグロトビは写真に収めたかったのですが、警戒心が強すぎてかないませんでした。カタグロトビは石垣島のように繁殖している可能性もありますね。

カモはキンクロハジロが数十羽とハシビロガモが十数羽。オシドリも2羽いました。そして、沖縄では珍しいスズガモを2羽撮影することができました!! トビ、ハシボソガラス、モズと同様にスズガモを撮影できたことは沖縄の人にしか分からない感動。^^;

石垣島へ1泊2日のバードウオッチングに行ってきました。島の友人たちから今年は鳥が少ないと聞いていましたが、想像以上に少なかったです。田んぼを回ってもシギやチドリがほんのわずかであとはアマサギやコサギなど。今回、カモ類は軽く見ただけでしたが、池やダムなど合わせて100羽ぐらいしかいませんでした。セキレイの仲間もほとんどいませんでした。

島では、久しぶりにカタグロトビを見てきました。1日目は夕方、餌取りをしているところを発見したのですが、撮影にはいたらず。2日目になんとか見ることができました。^^

暗色型サシバは2日目の午後、意外と近い枝に止まっているところを発見。しかし、警戒心は強めでした。現在、沖縄には暗色型サシバが少なくとも3個体はいることになります。沖縄本島の暗色型サシバは 南部 と 中部 に1羽ずつ。

カンムリワシの幼鳥は、今年は非常に少ないようでした。成鳥は、あちこちの畑や田んぼで見ることができました。

田んぼでは、ベニバトの成鳥メスが1羽電線に止まっているところを発見。地面に降りるのを待っていたら、どこからともなく現れたハイタカに飛ばされた…。^^;

ほかには、タカサゴモズを牧草地で発見したのですが事前情報がなかったため、「シマアカモズか?」と不用意に寄って飛ばしてしまい、写真には収められず…。場所を島の友人たちに教えてきたので、近いうちに写真がウェブログなどにアップされるでしょう。^^ キガシラセキレイもベニバトと同じ場所にいたのですが、こちらもハイタカに飛ばされて行方不明になってしまいました…。キガシラセキレイは、ハイタカが現れたおかげで見られたようなものですが、写真に撮っておきたかったー。

ユリカモメが田んぼに1羽いました。 2016年に同じ時期に同じ場所で見ています が、前回は成鳥で今回は幼鳥でした。

The third dark-morph Grey-faced Buzzard recorded in Okinawa this season. They're supposed to be rarely seen — so why are so many dark morphs turning up this year?
