Three Pied Avocets have been staying for several days. Single birds have also been found elsewhere, so they may have dispersed from the flock of eleven that arrived in November.

The first Black-tailed Godwit of the season has turned up. Also wintering in the paddies: Common Greenshanks, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers, Dunlins, Common Snipes, Black-winged Stilts, Common Redshanks and Wood Sandpipers.

Working my way around the rice fields, I heard a Ryukyu Flycatcher calling from the forest edge. Searching for it, I found a male in song. For some reason it also moved into the shrubs at the edge of the paddies.

Visiting Banna Park for the first time in a while, I had good encounters with several Ruddy Kingfishers. Males were conspicuous, which may mean many pairs have already moved into incubation.

I also spotted one Red Collared Dove. Perhaps tired from the crossing, it perched on a wire and occasionally closed its eyes.

In the paddies towards evening, a Ryukyu Sparrowhawk came down onto a farm track and looked around. Watching it, I could see it was targeting a Eurasian Tree Sparrow that had ducked into a thicket.

During a work break I counted four Common Hoopoes. Others were being seen elsewhere on the island — there were apparently at least seven birds present that day.

There was an odd thrush that looked like a Naumann's Thrush. The pattern on the breast and flanks wasn't quite right for Naumann's Thrush, and the bird gave an overall impression of Redwing. It seems quite likely to be a Naumann's Thrush × Redwing hybrid.

Eyebrowed Thrush, Brown-headed Thrush and Pale Thrush were all feeding on Machilus berries, but they disappeared into the branches and I couldn't get any photos.

The Arctic Warblers that have been wintering on Ishigaki are thinning out as the weather warms — they appear to be moving steadily northward. The individual that had been wintering around my house has quietly vanished.

A Eurasian Hoopoe that has been staying for over a week. It's unusual for one to linger that long on spring passage.

Two small Taiga Bean Geese together with Greater Bean Geese. They appear to be one of the smaller subspecies, but identification is difficult.

A small settling pond has Mandarin Duck, Tufted Duck, Eurasian Wigeon and others staying over. There was also an unidentified duck — I couldn't picture either parent for a hybrid, so domestic fowl may be mixed in.

An individual thought to be a Tundra Bean Goose, a smaller Bean Goose, and a Lesser White-fronted Goose.

名古屋に行ったついでに鳥見を少々。クビワキンクロ、ヨシガモ×ヒドリガモの雑種が見られたのが最高でした!! それ以外も石垣島ではなかなか見ることのできないミコアイサやカンムリカイツブリなどを見ることができました。

家族旅行で年末年始を沖縄本島で過ごしたついでに昨年の11月22日から滞在中のハイイロガン5羽を見てきました。正月の夜には4時間ほど夜探にでかけ、リュウキュウオオコノハズクやヤンバルクイナ、ヤマシギなどを観察しました。

出だしが悪く、やんばる夜の御三家コンプリートは厳しいかと思われたのですが、午前2時過ぎまで粘ってなんとか。オオコノハズクは鉄板ポイントを何カ所か回るも見つけられずでしたが、小雨が降り出すと鳴き声も3個体聞け、姿も3個体見ることができました。繁殖期のさえずりと思われる鳴き声も録音できました。下の動画から聞くことができます。

ヤンバルクイナは2羽、ヤマシギも2羽でした。久しぶりの長時間夜探は疲れました…。^^;

三角池では、2013年に韓国で標識された個体含めて15羽のクロツラヘラサギが所狭しと採餌していました。

年末年始、実家の名古屋へ里帰りしたついでに鳥見してきました。最終日の1月6日の午前中だけ河口にカモを見に行きました。しかし、肝心な双眼鏡を忘れてしまい、肉眼で探す羽目に…。

事前に情報をもらっていたオオホシハジロはなんとか見つけることができましたが、帰宅して写真の整理をしているとなんだか見慣れないカモが写っていました。おそらくメジロガモとホシハジロの雑種と思われます。双眼鏡を忘れなければ、現場で気づいていればと悔やまれます。

オオホシハジロは2016年に東京 で見ていますが、オスの成鳥は初めてです。やはりオスはかっこいいですね。耳から嘴の付け根あたりはまるで馬のよう!!

そのほか、ホオジロガモやマガモなど沖縄では見る機会が少ないカモも色々見ることができました。

年末年始で妻の実家と私の実家へ里帰り。妻の実家では、12月31日と年が明けた1月2日に和白干潟でミヤコドリなどを見てきました。 2018年の正月も和白干潟でミヤコドリ を見ており、1年ぶりの再会です。ミヤコドリは25羽いました。

2日は、早朝から赴き、ミヤコドリの寝起きから採餌に移るまで観察できました。午前7時半ごろが満潮でしたので、ミヤコドリたちは岸から30メートルほどの距離で休んでいました。明るくなるにつれ羽繕いなどしだし、太陽が顔を覗かせると干潟で餌探しを始めました。

ツクシガモは昨年同様、数え切れないほどの数が飛来していました。アメリカヒドリとヒドリガモの雑種は5羽確認。クロツラヘラサギは3羽のほかヨシガモやオナガガモ、マガモなども比較的近くで休んでいた。沖合にはカモが浮かんでいましたが、種類まで判別できず。

最後はオオタカが上空にやってきて全て飛ばしてしまいました…。^^;
