The second Common Hoopoe of the season has arrived. The Common Hoopoe is one of the birds that herald spring on Ishigaki Island, though it feels as if the arrival date gets a little earlier every year.

With the warmer weather, Crested Serpent Eagle and Black-winged Kite on Ishigaki Island have been observed carrying nesting material and displaying — confirmed breeding behaviour. Wintering waders and ducks are still present.

A Eurasian Hoopoe that turned up a little early. There are good years every few years, but I have a feeling this season will see a large influx of Eurasian Hoopoes on Ishigaki Island.

Visited my family home in Aichi and did some birdwatching on the side. I was targeting Latham's Snipe, but in spring they are far fewer in number and the timing was a little early, so I struck out…

Even so, I managed to see birds that are hard to come by in Okinawa or on Ishigaki, so it was a satisfying trip.

名古屋に行ったついでに鳥見を少々。クビワキンクロ、ヨシガモ×ヒドリガモの雑種が見られたのが最高でした!! それ以外も石垣島ではなかなか見ることのできないミコアイサやカンムリカイツブリなどを見ることができました。

刈谷市の友人宅に遊びに行った帰り、Google Mapsで息子を遊ばせる場所を探してみると池のあるよさげな公園を発見。池の周りの遊歩道を散歩しながらドングリなどを集めていました。横目で池を見てカモはいるけど少ないなーなどと思っていると黒白のツートンカラーのあいつが目の前を横切っていくではありませんか!! 慌てて駐車場の車からカメラを取り撮影。ミコアイサが3羽も池に浮かんでいました。

遊歩道をさらに進むと6羽のミコアイサが休んでいて驚きました。同じ池のマガモやカンムリカイツブリ、コガモ、オシドリなどもランニングの人とか犬の散歩してる人とかいるのに平気なのね…。^^;

遊歩道にいたアオジにいたっては手が届きそうな距離までやってきました。

別の川ではコハクチョウが27羽いました。足環付きと首にGPSらしきものをぶら下げた個体がいましたが、距離があって詳細は不明。

河川敷にはエナガやホオジロ科、ツグミ、シロハラなどもおり、意外と賑やかでした。
