We held the 4th Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp again this year. Two participants came down from Hokkaido. That said, snipe numbers were already low during the pre-camp scouting the day before, and I had a bad feeling about it. Sure enough — poor results. It ended up being the worst outing yet: one Pin-tailed Snipe, a few Swinhoe's Snipe, and a few Common Snipe.

On the plus side, we managed to see around 50 species including Collared Kingfisher, Ryukyu Kingfisher, Crested Serpent Eagle, and various resident and migratory birds, which everyone was happy about, so I'll call it good. Years like this happen.

The only Pin-tailed Snipe of the day. A beautiful individual — I knew what it was the moment it came into the binoculars.

The Collared Kingfisher that had been absent since around mid-February has come back to Ishigaki Island. Based on behavioral patterns and physical features — bill shape and plumage — it appears to be the same individual as before.

In the paddies, Pied Avocet, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, and Sharp-tailed Sandpiper have been forming impressive mixed flocks, much to the delight of visiting birdwatchers from off the island. ^^

The Collared Kingfisher, which had not been seen for over a month, has returned to Ishigaki Island.

A friend was visiting Ishigaki Island, so I checked on the Collared Kingfisher. It was doing well at its usual stretch of coastline. There are some guys drinking there in the middle of the day, but the bird doesn't seem to mind much. It flushes when pedestrians approach, but quickly returns to its regular perch on the tetrapod or the windbreak branches.

I spotted the Black-winged Kite on the way back from the municipal office — it was perched on a phone line eating a mouse. The town birds have lost a lot of their wariness toward people and are easy to observe.

The Collared Kingfisher that appeared on Ishigaki Island last October has safely made it through the new year and is wintering in good health. Watching from the bridge is fine, but if you walk along the farm road to get a closer look it flies off in an instant. Once it disappears, it can be hours before it shows again. I recommend approaching by vehicle. However, in an ordinary passenger car the seat is too low to see into the channel, so rent a minivan, kei truck, or kei van!!

On this day it caught centipedes and mudskippers (Periophthalmus modestus). Prey items confirmed so far are: crab, hermit crab, centipede, and mudskipper. The Collared Kingfisher that wintered at Manko Wetland on Okinawa Island between August 2017 and April 2018 was only ever seen taking crabs, but it seems that in a different habitat the bird takes a wider variety of prey.

Before heading home to Nagoya I went for one last look at the Collared Kingfisher for 2024. Temperatures have dropped and crabs — its main prey — seem to be less available; its ranging area has expanded considerably.

The Common Hoopoe was still present too, but my camera was already packed in the carry-on bag, so no photos this time.

There was also a strangely pale Chinese Pond Heron. Looking closely, the median coverts on the left wing are white. Three Chinese Pond Herons are wintering in the same area.

The last Collared Kingfisher of the year. This happy blue bird drew many birdwatchers to Ishigaki Island. Moult appears to have begun slightly, with fresh bright feathers coming in on the head. I hope it stays until the plumage is fully renewed.

It has been over a month since the Collared Kingfisher appeared on Ishigaki. Its daily routine has become predictable, so the encounter rate is staying at nearly 100%. It has become more wary, though, so the key is to observe without letting the Collared Kingfisher notice you.

The Tundra Swan that was on Iriomote has moved over to Ishigaki. Conversely, the Oriental Stork that was on Ishigaki has crossed over to Iriomote.

In the woodland, a Narcissus Flycatcher was found. Arctic Warblers, Japanese Bush Warblers and Manchurian Bush Warblers are also wintering.

The Collared Kingfisher on Ishigaki has been staying a long time. Its daily routine is settled, and it really feels like it will see the new year in. Caspian Terns and Black-headed Gulls are also visiting the beach where the Collared Kingfisher is found.

In nearby rice paddies, the first Taiga Bean Geese of the season were confirmed — a flock of six. Chinese Pond Herons, Red Collared Doves and Common Starlings are also present. It is all right on the doorstep, so there is plenty to enjoy there during the times when the Collared Kingfisher is not showing.

Has it decided to winter here? The Collared Kingfisher is now into its third week of stay.

It appeared as if timing the moments when no one was around, then struggled to swallow a large crab whole. When a bicycle passed, it flew off somewhere with the crab still in its bill.

A Collared Kingfisher has turned up on Ishigaki Island. There was previously a Collared Kingfisher that stayed at Manko on Okinawa Main Island from August 2017 through April 2018.

I was posted to the Naha bureau at the time, so I saw more than enough of that bird — but it is good to see one close to home. This individual seems more vivid in colour than the Okinawa Main Island bird.

The Collared Kingfisher is said to have 50 subspecies, and this one also appears to be Todiramphus chloris collaris. This year a Collared Kingfisher was also photographed by a friend on Miyako Island, and what looked like one was reported on another island in the Yaeyamas. This may be a bumper year for Collared Kingfishers. There is a good chance more will turn up elsewhere.

漫湖での滞在期間が8カ月の長逗留のナンヨウショウビン。きょうの沖縄は天気もよく汗ばむ陽気の中、何度も目の前に現れ、ナンヨウショウビンファンのみなさんを楽しませてくれました。福岡から来た若いカップルも到着早々にナンヨウショウビンを見ることができ幸先のよいスタートが切れたようです。

一番のお気に入りの枝に止まると、シロガシラ2羽の猛烈な攻撃を受けていました。巣があるのかもしれません。攻撃をうるさがってか、きょうは、いつもはあまり止まらない木を利用していました。

この木は、展望台近辺からも見えるのですが、木道をセンターの方へ戻ると1カ所だけ最短距離で抜ける場所があります。そこから撮ると距離も近く順光でナンヨウショウビンの美しい姿が夏のような太陽に照らされてひときわ輝いていました。みなさんも試してください。1人分の場所しかないので譲り合いの心でお願いします。

漫湖のナンヨウショウビンはまだいます。朝夕と潮の満ち引きに合わせて姿を見せてくれます。遭遇率は98%ぐらいでしょうか。いつ繁殖地へ帰ってしまうか気もそぞろで見守っております。漫湖で会った奈良から来沖のご夫婦には「shimasobaさんですか?」と声を掛けていただきました。見たいと言ってた鳥は見ることができたかなー?

漫湖が完全に潮で満ちるとカワセミがやって来て魚をとっていました。

豊崎では、ムネアカタヒバリ9羽の群れやムクドリ、シロガシラなどがいました。近くの草原にはアジアゾウがいました。沖縄では、空き地にウマやウシ、ヤギがつながれていることは珍しくないですが、アジアゾウは初めて見たゾー。

昨年8月15日に沖縄本島で初めて確認されたナンヨウショウビンは、漫湖で長逗留中。今月でちょうど6カ月が経ちました。

曇りがちな冬の沖縄ですが、ここ数日、晴れ間がのぞくようになりました。いつになるか分かりませんが、ナンヨウショウビンが繁殖地へ戻ってしまう時が日に日に近づいています。いつ抜けてもおかしくないので、この休日、ラムサール条約湿地の漫湖でナンヨウショウビンを拝んで来ました。

漫湖水鳥・湿地センターの木道からナンヨウショウビンお気に入りの枝を見ると早速、現れました。しかし、まだ潮が高く木道からは死角になり、とよみ大橋から見える位置へ飛んで行ってしまった。

重たい機材を担いで橋まで移動するのも難儀なので潮が満ちてくるのを待つと、30分後、先ほどの場所へカニをくわえて戻って来ました。それからは、木道から見える場所で数匹カニを捕まえて数人の観察者を楽しませてくれました。

今日は、一年のうちで一番昼の時間が短い冬至でした。本土では、カボチャを食ったりゆず湯に浸かって体を温めたりしますが、沖縄では「トゥンジージューシー」を食ってこれからやってくる寒さに備えて体力をつけます。沖縄では湯船に浸かる習慣はないので、ゆず湯のようなものはありません。^^;

さて、 8月に漫湖干潟で見つかったナンヨウショウビン はあれから4カ月が経ちました。今年のナンヨウショウビンの見納めにと久しぶりに見に行ってきました。

換羽が進んでいるようにも見えますがどうなんでしょう。

昼過ぎに到着すると、すでにナンヨウショウビンはお気に入りのマングローブに止まって潮が引き、干潟に現れる獲物のカニを待ち伏せしていました。数時間のうちに何度かカニを捕まえました。

いつもの撮影ポイントのとよみ大橋からは死角になる場所だったので、干潟の木道から回って正解でした。^^

きょうは、二十四節気の一つ白露。平年に比べて3度ほど暑い沖縄は、まだまだ真夏日が続きます。いつもなら9月22日ごろには最高気温が30度を下回ってくるのですが、今年はもうしばらく真夏日が続きそうですね。

上げ潮に合わせて時間が取れたので久しぶりにナンヨウショウビンを見てきました。

漫湖干潟を見渡せるとよみ大橋に到着し、しばらく双眼鏡で探しているとナンヨウショウビンが視界に現れました。お気に入りの枝に止まってカニを捕まえていました。30分もすると干潟は見えなくなり、ナンヨウショウビンもマングローブの中へ消えていきました。8月10日に発見されて以来、もうすぐで滞在1カ月となります。この調子だと、このまま越冬しそうですね。^^;

ナンヨウショウビンは、次にいつ見られるか分からないので、きょうも見てきました。^^

昨日と同じ枝に現れましたが、枝が被ってよく見えない。しばらくすると対岸の一番遠い場所へ飛んでいってしまった。しばらく待つと元いた木の近くへ戻ってきましたが、枝が込み入った場所でやはり見難い。^^;

The Collared Kingfisher seems to dislike other birds such as Brown-eared Bulbuls — whenever one came close, it chased them off.

帰宅途中、漫湖干潟に寄ってみました。きょうもナンヨウショウビンは、いつもの場所に登場。発見されてから15日が経ちました。漫湖干潟には、カニなどナンヨウショウビンの餌となる生き物がたくさんいるので、このまま越冬してくれたら嬉しいですね。

夕方になり現れたナンヨウショウビンは、餌取りなどの行動は見せてくれず、マングローブでまったりと過ごしていた。毎回のことですが、ナンヨウショウビンまでの距離があり、豆粒のようにしか写真には写らなかったので、超トリミングしています。^^; いつかは、もう少し近くで写真に収めたいものです。

ナンヨウショウビンは、しばらく美しい姿を堪能させてくれたのち、ねぐらをとっている林の中へ消えていった。

きょうは、二十四節気の一つ処暑。シギやチドリの渡りが始まり、秋は着実に来ているのですが暑い一日でした。^^;

漫湖干潟では、1週間ぶりにナンヨウショウビンに会えました。きょうもとよみ大橋からの観察で遠かったですが、再び巡り会えてよかった。8月10日に発見されてから2週間がたちました。

「最後にナンヨウショウビンをもう一度見てみたい」と思っていましたが、いざ見つかるとまだまだいてほしいという気持ちになるものです。^^

久しぶりに沖縄本島のマスター(勝手に私が思っているだけ…。^^;)とも数カ月ぶりにフィールドで会うことができた。ジシギの識別の手助けになるようにと、マスター作の沖縄のジシギ写真集も頂いた。昨年も識別頑張ろうとして挫折していますが、今冬こそやるぞ!!

現場に着くとすでにナンヨウショウビンが餌取りにやってきていました。 昨日 に比べると距離が倍ぐらいあり遠い…。^^;

しかし、愛想よく獲物のカニなどをとったりして楽しませてくれました。

今月10日に発見されてから1週間がたちましたが、このナンヨウショウビンは、いつまで滞在してくれるのでしょうか。

漫湖水鳥・湿地センターへは、ナンヨウショウビンについて何件か問い合わせの電話があったそうです。漫湖水鳥・湿地センターへもぜひ立ち寄ってみてください。係の方は非常にフレンドリーで親切ですし、野鳥情報も聞けますよ。

那覇市と豊見城市にまたがる漫湖干潟になんと珍鳥ナンヨウショウビンが姿を見せました。沖縄野鳥の会の会長さんと沖縄南部自然を守る会の会員さんから情報を提供いただきました。ありがとうございます。

午前中は、饒波川からとよみ大橋まで2時間以上かけて歩きながら探したのですが、見つからず。途中、野鳥の会の会員さんとばったり会い、夕方のが出がいいですよとのアドバイスをいただき、出直すことにしました。

夕方は、とよみ大橋からの探索。沖縄本島初記録となるナンヨウショウビンを一目見ようと約10人ほどが集まっていました。

誰かに見つけてもらったナンヨウショウビンは、絶対に嫌だったので最初に見つけてやろうと目を皿のようにして探していると日没直前の午後6時48分に出ました!!

「居た!!」と言って万が一にもカワセミだったら恥ずかしので、息を整えてもう一度双眼鏡を覗くと完全にナンヨウショウビンでした。そこで初めて、沖縄野鳥の会会長さんに報告の上、皆さんに居たことを告げると全員で撮影会。

次はいつ見られるか分からないので、遠い、暗い、橋が揺れるの三重苦の厳しい条件の中、とりあえず写真に押さえようとシャッター音があたりに響き渡りました。^^

湿地のマングローブに止まったナンヨウショウビンは、キアシシギやコサギにアタックしていました。自分の縄張りだと主張しているかのようです。10分ほど、飛び回り、ほかの鳥を散々驚かしてから午後7時10分ごろにはマングローブの中に消えて行きました。

その後は、居合わせた皆さんと固い握手をしてナンヨウショウビンに会えたことを喜びました。^^

小笠原方面の台風の影響なのか今月上旬に名護市で2羽、北谷町で1羽のコアホウドリが迷い込んできているので、このナンヨウショウビンもその影響で沖縄本島までやってきてしまったのでしょうか。
