Ahead of the 6th Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp, I went to scout the paddies around the island. Pin-tailed Snipe, Swinhoe's Snipe, and Common Snipe were all confirmed — a relief. Now there is nothing left to do but hope they stay for a few more days.
First Pin-tailed Snipe of the season!!
I have been able to document Pin-tailed Snipe wintering on Ishigaki Island as a definite record. This is the individual confirmed last November. Construction started nearby and I was too busy with work over the year-end and New Year period to get out and check, but it was wintering at the same spot.
Pin-tailed Snipe had been observed here as late as late February 2024, but a solid wintering record had remained elusive. Having confirmed this bird from November through to late January, it now stands as a firm wintering record. I can only hope this individual stays on through to the spring Pin-tailed Snipe season in April.
This Pin-tailed Snipe left a strong impression, so I've been able to identify it individually. You can tell at a glance. ^^ First-winter plumage.
Two Pied Avocets have been present for several days. A flock of Black-faced Spoonbills and Eurasian Spoonbills, Bar-tailed Godwit, and Garganey have been staying a long time. Wintering Eurasian Teal and Northern Shoveler are also steadily building up.

The Black Drongo that appeared near my home has been drifting slowly eastward and is now into its fourth day of stay. It is an unwary individual, always perched on the roadside wires. This season has been a bumper year for Black Drongo on Ishigaki Island — on peak days nearly 20 birds were recorded in a single day.
A small flock of Oriental Pratincoles had moved into the paddies. They were working the same area as the Whiskered Terns, but while the terns drifted low and picked insects off the rice plants, the pratincoles were up high, hawking incoming insects.
Black-faced Spoonbill, Eurasian Spoonbill and Chinese Pond Heron have also been dropping into the paddies one after another.

First records this season of Black-tailed Godwit, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Striated Heron. Unless the weather turns rough, large waders like the Black-tailed Godwit don't come down to Ishigaki. Striated Heron is scarce on the island, so finding one felt like a bonus.

A Kentish Plover turned up that looks slightly different from the birds that breed on Ishigaki. I haven't paid much serious attention to Kentish Plovers before, but this individual stood out.
First Whiskered Terns of the season confirmed — two birds quartering over the rice paddies. A juvenile Eurasian Spoonbill is also still present; it's an individual with a noticeably pale bill. Wood Sandpiper and Black-winged Stilt numbers are up, though the peak for waders in the paddies hasn't really arrived yet this season. Little Ringed Plover and Long-toed Stint are also gradually increasing.
Isabeline Shrikes are thinning out as they head to breeding grounds. The pair of overwintering Peregrine Falcons is still here. The one-eyed Crested Serpent Eagle near my home is somehow hanging on. Ishigaki Tit appears to be busy with nesting.

A Eurasian Spoonbill and Common Shelduck are staying in the rice fields. The Ruddy Shelducks were startled by a hunting dog, flew off and have not returned — they may have taken refuge somewhere around the dam.
Wintering Common Snipe are everywhere, but a wintering Swinhoe's Snipe has not been found since the end of the year…

Two Pied Avocets have arrived. They may be individuals already wandering around the island — four more Pied Avocets have also been confirmed elsewhere.
The Common Crane is also in wintering mode. At first it was extremely wary, but now not at all. ^^
A Eurasian Spoonbill is also staying on — a friendly individual. Wintering waders are showing up as well.

The three Ruddy Shelducks already on the island have joined up together. Two more have also arrived, bringing the total on Ishigaki to five — a record high.
While I was watching the Ruddy Shelducks, a Eurasian Spoonbill came down. It's likely the individual that has been moving around the island since last month.
I had just spotted a Von Schrenck's Bittern and was waiting at the edge of the rice field where it had vanished in an instant, when a Cinnamon Bittern walked over from the adjacent paddy. A little while later, just as the Cinnamon Bittern seemed to have entered the rice too, it flushed the Von Schrenck's Bittern out…
The Von Schrenck's Bittern dropped into a fallow field a short distance away, but the grass was too tall to see anything. I had to be somewhere else soon, so I left the rest to my friends. Apparently, once a farmer started working the field, both a Von Schrenck's Bittern and a Eurasian Bittern flushed!! All sorts of things are hiding out here — Ishigaki really is a joy to bird. ^^

この時季、島内には留鳥、渡り含めて多くのサギの仲間が滞在中。
留鳥のズグロミゾゴイとムラサキサギは繁殖を控えて活発になっています。渡り途中のクロツラヘラサギとヘラサギも合わせて10羽ほどが確認されています。ほかにはアマサギやコサギ、チュウサギ、チュウダイサギ、アカガシラサギ、ゴイサギなどが渡り途中に立ち寄っています。
カモは石垣島で繁殖するカルガモ以外はすっかりいなくなったのですが、なぜか、ヨシガモのオスが1羽だけ残っていました。ケガなどなければいいのですが…。

メジロガモ3羽、沖縄的珍鳥のスズガモ2羽が滞在中。ホシハジロは八重山では珍しく、沖縄本島ではそこそこ見られます。ヘラサギ1羽が島内を移動しつつ滞在中でユリカモメも1〜8羽が増えたり減ったりしながら逗留しています。
田んぼのシギは、タシギやアカアシシギ、アオアシシギ、クサシギ、タカブシギあたりが滞在中です。
忘れていた10月の保護個体のアカオネッタイチョウも2カ月遅れで掲出しておきます。^^;

多忙につき、4月16日までの3日分のバードウオッチングの成果の一部をまとめてご紹介します。今季初となるチュウジシギをやっと確認。後日、追記します。
情報もらっても見に行っていない鳥もいますので、そのあたりは割愛します…。^^; 以下の写真の通り、田んぼや海岸には日替わりで渡り鳥たちがやってきています。この時季の石垣島は、とっても楽しいですよ。

ブロンズトキは毎日のようにハヤブサに追われて落ち着きません。群れの数も19羽から16羽に減りました。食われたか逸れたかしたのでしょう。滞在場所も以前とは違う場所になりました。
海岸にはシギやチドリが日替わりで出たり入ったりを繰り返しています。メダイチドリやキョウジョシギ、トウネンあたりがレギュラーメンバーでその合間にサルハマシギやミユビシギ、オバシギなどが渡ってきます。キリアイも珍しく近くで見ることができました。夏羽のハシブトアジサシも河口で飛び回っています。
The flock of Glossy Ibises has been relentlessly chased by a Peregrine Falcon for the past several days. This individual was struck on the neck but managed to survive.
1月14日に名古屋から再び福岡入り。せっかくなので諫早名物のナベコウを見てやろうと義母の車を借りて高速道路をひた走り。2時間半ほどかかりました。遠かった…。^^;
広大な諫早干拓なのに事前の情報ゼロで訪れたので、探せど探せどナベコウは見つからず。あきらめかけた時、上空の高いところを黒っぽい怪鳥が飛んでいます。双眼鏡でのぞいてみると念願のナベコウでした。写真を数枚撮り、降り立った地点を確認の上、現場に現場に駆けつけるも見つけられず…。大きく目立つ鳥ですが、水路に降りてしまうと意外と見つけにくいようです。
干拓内では、マナヅルやコチョウゲンボウ、ハイイロチュウヒ、オオジュリン、ミヤマガラスのほか、石垣島でもおなじみのタヒバリやタゲリ、タシギ、ヘラサギ、クロツラヘラサギなどがいました。

今季初のヘラサギがクロツラヘラサギとともに飛来しました。コサギ、クロツラヘラサギと並ぶとヘラサギの大きさが一段と目立っていました。
クロツラヘラサギがかなり若い個体で不安なのかヘラサギについて回るのですが、あまりヘラサギに近づき過ぎるとしかられていました。^^ それでもヘラサギが飛び立つとクロツラヘラサギも飛び立ってついて行っていました。

昨年12月ごろから滞在のヘラサギ は多い時は3羽いましたが、現在は1羽のみが越冬中。同じく 11月から三角池で越冬中のエリマキシギ は最初はオスとメスの合わせて幼鳥2羽でしたが、現在は、メスが1羽のみ越冬中。換羽が進み幼羽もなくなっているようでした。
他には、コガモやハシビロガモ、アオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、タシギ、コチドリなどがいました。

6羽入ったオニアジサシが最後の1羽 になったのがちょうど1カ月前でしたが、ふたたびオニアジサシが入りました。強風が吹いていて寒そうに寝てばかりでしたが、いつまで滞在してくれるのか。具志干潟では、ダイシャクシギやダイゼンも越冬中。
三角池のソリハシセイタカシギ は2羽に増えていました。ヘラサギも 2年前 に見て以来の飛来でした。渡ってきたばかりなのか少し疲れた顔をしています。エリマキシギも逗留中です。

豊崎干潟と三角池で、それぞれ嘴が特徴的なソリハシセイタカシギ、ヘラサギ、クロツラヘラサギを観察して来ました。豊崎干潟の6羽のクロツラヘラサギたちは、休憩モードでたまに羽繕いをする程度でほとんど動かず。
三角池のソリハシセイタカシギとヘラサギ、クロツラヘラサギは餌を探したり、羽繕いをしたりと割と活動的でした。
現在、沖縄本島内のクロツラヘラサギは9羽とヘラサギは1羽が豊見城市と糸満市で確認できます。

妻の実家、福岡へ遊びに行ったついでに、ハチクマの渡りを佐賀県唐津市の鏡山にある西展望台で観察してきました。この展望台は、眼下に長さ4.5kmの「虹の松原」と、その奥には穏やかな唐津湾が一望できる風光明媚なロケーションです。
この日は、午前9時ごろに展望台の東に見える一番高い山の上あたりを双眼鏡で覗くと数十羽のハチクマのタカ柱が認められました。それから30分後には、なんとか肉眼で見えるところまでタカ柱がやってきたのですが、雲に入ってしまいました。
午前10時すぎから、ぼちぼちハチクマが現れ出すのですが、残念ながら鏡山の南側を通過し、山が邪魔してうまく写真に収められません。
午前11時ごろになると、やっと山の北側を通過する群が現れだし、写真にも収めることができました。石垣島でもアカハラダカやサシバの渡りの時季に観察できることがあるのですが、シーズンに1羽か2羽程度と非常に少なく、今回、午前9時から午前11時半までの間に100羽以上のハチクマを観察でき大変感動しました。いつかは、五島の福江でハチクマの渡りを見て見たいものです。
和白干潟では、多くのカモと一緒にヘラサギとクロツラヘラサギが休んでいました。例年であれば、7〜8羽は飛来しているそうですが今季は遅いとのこと。どこの渡りを見に行ってもみなさん異口同音に今年の渡りは遅いと言います。台風の影響なのか繁殖地の問題なのか、はたまた気象条件が変わってきているのか…。

南城市の佐敷干潟に行ってきました。ヘラサギの幼鳥が1羽でいました。
ミサゴは餌をどこかで獲ってきてはこの場所で食うようで、3羽のミサゴが思いおもいの場所に降りて干渉し合うこともなく獲物の魚を食っていました。
