I went birdwatching on the side while on a work trip to cover the Yonaguni Town Council election. ^^

I confirmed multiple migrating Chinese Sparrowhawk, and Common Kestrel had also arrived to overwinter. Migrating Oriental Dollarbird and Grey-streaked Flycatcher were also present, along with good numbers of overwintering Brown Shrike, Arctic Warbler, and Eastern Yellow Wagtail.

In recent years the rice paddies on Yonaguni Island have decreased, so waders and plovers are sparse — just small numbers of Black-winged Stilt, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint, Common Sandpiper, and Red-necked Stint.

Common Emerald Dove, having finished breeding, formed small flocks and I watched them feeding on several occasions.

A work trip to Yonaguni Island gave me a little time for birding. I had hoped for rarities like the Chestnut-winged Cuckoo and Grey-faced Buzzard from the previous year, but it didn't quite work out that way. Even so, I got to see a flock of Eurasian Siskins — a species you rarely encounter on Ishigaki — so it was an enjoyable trip.

My first Naumann's Thrush of the season turned out to be on Yonaguni Island.

As I cruised the forest road with a sense that autumn migration was well and truly getting under way, I spotted a fig tree that birds were gathering in. While watching a flock of Warbling White-eyes, a yellow warbler flew into my field of view. I got it in the binoculars — it was a Willow Warbler!! It was moving from branch to branch, apparently picking off small insects.

I also had first records for the trip of Chinese Sparrowhawk, Oriental Dollarbird, Dark-sided Flycatcher, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Grey-streaked Flycatcher, Garganey, Common Snipe, and White-shouldered Starling. Yonaguni Island delivers, as always. ^^

Arctic Warbler makes an appearance. It stands out clearly — obviously different from the other Japanese leaf warblers.

I had a work trip to Yonaguni Island after a long absence, so I went birding in my spare time. I came across a Chestnut-winged Cuckoo — found it at a private house in Sonai. It looked annoyed at being pestered by a Brown-eared Bulbul. I also spotted what appeared to be a Pale Buzzard.

Across the island, Emberizas were coming in in good numbers — Rustic Bunting, Yellow Bunting, Little Bunting and others. Narcissus Flycatcher, Daurian Redstart and Grey-streaked Flycatcher were staying all over the island. One Common Pochard had dropped into Kubura Mitou.

I couldn't get away for summer vacation because work was too busy, so we made a last-minute family trip to Miyako-jima. We visited the Grey-faced Buzzard migration survey site on Irabu-jima. The terrain is very flat, and the tsunami evacuation shelter at the survey point is only three stories tall — quite different from the mountaintop surveys on Ishigaki-jima. Birds that had headed out over the sea but given up heading south were coming back and dropping down onto Shimoji-jima one after another.

One of the surveyors told me that back when Grey-faced Buzzards were still hunted, crowds of people would show up at night with torches in the Casuarina forest along the channel between Irabu-jima and Shimoji-jima — from a distance it looked like some kind of festival. Of course, nobody hunts Grey-faced Buzzards anymore.

A small patch of scrubby woodland held plenty of Grey-streaked Flycatchers on migration. I also picked up two Blue-and-white Flycatchers. I heard Black Wood Pigeons calling and got fairly easy views by following the sound, but I was out walking with the kids so I never got to the point of raising the camera…

I finally got photos of the Pechora Pipits whose calls I had been picking up from the grassland for the past few days.

Red-throated Pipits have arrived in large numbers, so picking out the Pechora Pipits took some patience — but when I waited by the call, a bird popped up onto a rice-paddy berm right after the rain stopped. Finding a bird exactly as planned is a special kind of satisfaction. ^^

Chinese Sparrowhawk migration has been under way since early September, but bad weather has continued thanks to the typhoon and a lot of birds are lingering on Ishigaki-jima. At peak times three or so were perched on the power lines together. Once the weather clears they should push through all at once.

Grey-streaked Flycatchers on migration and wintering Arctic Warblers are also increasing. A large flock of around 500 Chestnut-cheeked Starlings was moving through parks in the town centre.

The first Pied Avocet, Spotted Redshank, Eurasian Wigeon, and Northern Shoveler of the season have arrived. I had been hearing Japanese Leaf Warbler by call for several days, but this time I finally managed a photograph.

Pin-tailed Snipe numbers have dropped; today I could only squeeze out a single bird. Swinhoe's Snipe are past their peak but still well represented. Common Snipe are increasing.

Found the first Pectoral Sandpiper of the season. Red-throated Pipits are also increasing but still difficult to photograph.

Garganey seem numerous this season — they are being recorded in paddies all over the area.

A strong north wind, almost typhoon-like, was blowing, and Barn Swallows had come down to rest on the farm tracks.

I searched for birds in an area where Black-naped Oriole has been appearing repeatedly over the past few days. I couldn't find the Black-naped Oriole itself, but Arctic Warbler, Eastern Crowned Warbler, Dark-sided Flycatcher, and Grey-streaked Flycatcher turned up in good numbers.

9月末から10月上旬が渡りのピークのはずのエゾビタキがまだいました。田んぼにはノビタキが2羽。今季はノビタキを確認する機会が多いです。ジョウビタキも数を増やし、この日はオス8羽とメス2羽を確認しました。

ムナグロは幼鳥を今季、やっとの初確認。成鳥が来てから長かった…。

ハリオシギは滞在中でチュウジシギは結構な数が逗留中。タシギもどんどん増えています。

新型コロナで県外へ出られないので、シルバーウイーク中は2泊3日で与那国島へ家族旅行に行ってきました。

移動途中、林道や海岸線などをちょっとだけ鳥見。秋の渡りには若干早かったのと、2日目まで南風が吹き続けていたので与那国らしい鳥は出せませんでした…。^^;

2日目の夕方から北寄りの風になり、前日まで全くいなかったアカハラダカは林道などでたくさん見られました。西崎で観光していると南側の海上から目線の高さでアカハラダカが単独で島へ飛び込んできました。アマサギやコサギの群れは北風が吹き出した3日目に幾度となく海から与那国島へ到着する群れを見ました。40羽から最大で100羽ほどの群れでやってきました。

ブッポウソウは2日目の夕方に1羽、3日目にもう1羽を確認しました。八重山のブッポウソウはだいたいこの時期で石垣島でも1羽出ていました。

この時期、島内で特に目につくのはエゾビタキとシマアカモズ とツメナガセキレイで、何羽見たかわかりません。ツメナガセキレイは珍しい亜種も期待したのですが、全てマミジロツメナガセキレイでした。

東崎では、まさに到着したばかりというチュウジシギが岬の先端にいました。

ライファーとなるアリスイも確認。沖縄ではなかなか見ることができず「やばいの見つけた」というと息子が「長芋見つけた?」と聞き返し3歳児のかわいさ全開です。^^

沖縄県が設置したウリミバエの不妊虫放飼カゴ周りにはサンコウチョウやキマユムシクイ、キセキレイ、エゾビタキ、ツバメ、タイワンヒヨドリなどが集まっていました。

林道ではトケン3羽を見たのですがどれも飛び去る後ろ姿だけなので同定できず…。カラムクドリは十数羽の群れ、サンショウクイも数羽の群れを何度か見ました。ムシクイは子連れでの撮影は厳しいですね…。^^;

そして与那国島で一番の成果はハリオシギの死体を拾ったことです。^^ このハリオシギは featherbase にて 羽根標本(Exhibit #5698) になりました。

今季初となるエゾビタキを確認しました。この鳥を見ると秋の深まりを感じますねー。

カンムリワシは今季、4羽目と5羽目を確認。4羽目は警戒心が強めで写真が撮れませんでした。^^;

先日のアカエリヒレアシシギはまだ滞在中。チュウジシギは畔にぼちぼち、タシギはかなり増えてきました。

田んぼには、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギ、アカアシシギ、タカブシギ、セイタカシギ、ヒバリシギ、トウネンなどがそこそこいます。

ノビタキが田んぼに飛来していました。2羽いるようですが、警戒心が強く撮影できたのは1羽のみ。

エゾビタキもまだ残っている個体がいます。この日は同じポイントで2羽を確認しました。

ベニバトは10月中旬ごろから増え出し、現在は石垣島内の複数箇所の田んぼで10羽ほどが観察できます。

八重山では、ベニバトよりもノビタキの方が珍鳥ですね。^^

同じ田んぼにムネアカタヒバリの群れが入りました。鳴き声を聞く限り、十数羽すべてムネアカタヒバリのようです。

昨日、撮影し忘れたベニバト を撮ってきました。昨日とは打って変わって猛禽が多くて鳥が隠れがち。ベニバトもキジバトも茂みからなかなか出てきてくれません。ベニバトも昨日は2羽いたのですが、今日見つけられたのは1羽のみ。

ジャワアカガシラサギはいつもの場所にいました。ジャワアカガシラサギはこの水路ともう少し離れた草地のどちらかに必ずいます。何かに驚いて逃げた時は、ねぐらの林まで飛びますがそこは、通路から中を見ることはできない。

エゾビタキもまだ多少残っています。ハクセキレイも10月中旬に入って以来、どんどん増えてきています。

Both the Pale-backed Dove and the Oriental Turtle Dove would not come out, wary of raptors such as Japanese Sparrowhawk, Common Kestrel, and Eurasian Sparrowhawk.

エゾビタキがバンナ公園や市街地の公園に結構残っていました。チョウゲンボウは9月半ばに初確認して以来、やっとまともな写真に撮れた。カンムリワシは成鳥も幼鳥もそこそこ見やすくなっています。

西表島と与那国島の連続出張。空いた時間で軽くバードウオッチングしてきました。

今年は全国的に長雨や台風の影響のなのか秋の渡りが遅れており、ピークにはわずかに早かったようですが、西表島では大量のマミジロツメナガセキレイの群れに数羽のマミジロタヒバリが入っていたり、農耕地の電線にはブッポウソウがいたりしました。1泊でしたが、翌日には北風が強くなり上原航路は欠航。大原から帰る羽目になりました。

与那国島では、エゾビタキ、シマアカモズ、ツメナガセキレイの3種が大量に入っていました。エゾビタキは農道に数羽が固まって降りてたり、シマアカモズは10メートルから20メートル間隔であちこちに、ツメナガセキレイは数種の亜種が牧草地や畑、牛舎に群れていました。

初日と2日目はシギはセイタカシギぐらいしかいなかったのですが、4日目には、タシギやハマシギ、エリマキシギなどが入りだしました。

台風の北風が強まると鳥たちは風裏に避難してきたのか、宇良部岳の南側では高密度でアカハラダカとエゾビタキ、シマアカモズ、ツメナガセキレイが林道に集まっていた。その中で、1羽の青い鳥がいると思ったらなんとオオルリの幼鳥でした。

ほかには、田んぼや沈砂池でクロハラアジサシ、林道ではコサメビタキ、牧場ではキタツメナガセキレイかシベリアツメナガセキレイと思われる幼鳥などに出会えました。

与那国島では4泊の予定でしがた、帰る予定の19日から北風がさらに強まり飛行機が欠航。結局、台風17号も発生し、1週間もの間、与那国島に閉じ込められました。風も強く、やることもないので、宿で仕事をして過ごすという最悪のパターンに…。食材確保も大変で石垣島に帰ってくる頃には1キロほど体重が減っていました…。^^;

先日のキビタキのオス は2羽ともまだいました。滞在1週間になります。秋の渡りのキビタキにしては長逗留。ここのところ天気が悪かったからかな。前回は、数人に囲まれていたので高い枝ばかりに止まっていましたが、今日は、ベンチに1人で座っていると目線の高さで近くまで向こうから寄ってきました。やはり鳥は待たないとダメですね。最短では3メートルまで寄ってきましたよ。^^

エゾビタキも数羽が滞在中。こちらは入れ替わっているのかどうなのか個体識別ができないので分かりませんが、キビタキと同じで天候待ちの渡り待機組でしょう。

足元には何匹かリュウキュウカジカガエルが現れました。雨が降ったり止んだりだからか?

渡りの途中、鳥たちが立ち寄る公園を散歩してきました。エゾビタキ、コサメビタキがあちこちに飛来していました。他の小鳥も期待したのですが、撮影できたのはエゾビタキ5個体とコサメビタキ1羽。

どの個体もフライングキャッチはせずに、芝生に降りては小さな虫を捕まえていた。

昨年、セアカモズ(雑種?) が入った草はらにはシマアカモズの幼鳥がいました。そう毎年はやってきませんね。^^;

今日は、二十四節気の寒露です。冬鳥たちがやってくる季節ですね。

今朝は、午前5時半に起床し、午前7時半には名護岳の天上展望台に到着しました。到着後、1時間ぐらいは何も飛びませんでしたが、午前8時半ごろから北の方角からアカハラダカの群れがやってきました。今日最大のタカ柱は100羽ほどでかなり迫力がありました。

午前9時までも観察で250羽ほどが南へ渡って行きました。

また、サシバも十数羽がアカハラダカの群に混じって南に渡って行きました。石垣島では、アカハラダカは早朝にサシバは午後15時以降に飛ぶので両者が同じタカ柱をつくることはなかったのですが、名護岳では、アカハラダカとサシバの交ざったタカ柱が観察でき得した気分!!

エゾビタキも小さな群れがいくつも南に飛び去って行きました。田んぼには、ヒシクイが5羽やってきていました。季節の移ろいを感じさせます。

10月10日追記： この日は、最終的にアカハラダカ500オーバー、サシバ40ほどが飛んだそうです。
