Red Collared Doves have turned up at various spots around the island. The largest flock I saw was nine birds, roughly half male and half female.

Wintering Common Kestrels are also increasing, and a nearby water area had growing numbers of Little Grebe and Eurasian Coot — these too will be wintering on Ishigaki.

The Crested Serpent Eagles have finished breeding and are now easier to find in open habitats such as paddy fields.

The Javan Pond Heron that arrived in July has been staying long-term and numbers have been building.

In the same rice field, Greater Painted-snipe and Common Moorhen are incubating eggs. They appear to breed multiple times a year. White-breasted Waterhens are at all sorts of different breeding stages simultaneously — newly hatched chicks alongside large, well-grown ones. They too may be raising several broods a year.

Three Javan Pond Herons are staying in the same rice field. They have also been recorded in other areas, and there seem to be a fair number on the island. On the Okinawa main island, arrivals have been confirmed in the north, central, and south. Their range appears to be expanding steadily eastward in recent years.

Chinese Sparrowhawk migration is under way. The weather has been unsettled but it should pick up in earnest from here. Two Eurasian Teal — my first of the season — had arrived.

The Grey-headed Swamphen staying on Ishigaki has had a Hen Harrier turning up at its paddy field for the past few days, causing havoc. Several friends have come to Ishigaki to see the Swamphen, but it has become wary and is showing poorly, so they are having a hard time.

A Pheasant-tailed Jacana is also in residence and going about its business peacefully. I had noted Garganey several times over the past two weeks or so, but this time I finally managed to get it on camera.

I also recorded my first Greater White-fronted Goose and White-faced Wagtail of the season.

The paddies are lively, with Ruff, Dunlin, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint, Red-necked Stint, Common Snipe, and Black-winged Stilt, as well as Eastern Red-rumped Swallow, Amur Stonechat, Eastern Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Red-throated Pipit, and Little Bunting.

I found a Pin-tailed Snipe that is the latest spring migration record I've had. In just three more months the autumn migration of Pin-tailed Snipe will be starting… With Typhoon No. 2 approaching Ishigaki, there's a good chance it will stay into June. Something to look forward to.

Shorebird migration is nearly over, but a small group of Black-winged Stilts and Common Greenshanks has arrived.

今季初のハマシギを確認。タカブシギやヒバリシギは成鳥、幼鳥とも数を増やしています。ウズラシギ、クサシギ、コチドリなどもいましたが、幼鳥の到着はまだのようです。

石垣島で唯一、繁殖するシギのタマシギは親子連れが水浴びをしていました。

定例調査で海岸3カ所巡り。オオメダイチドリの幼鳥が増えていました。ムナグロやキアシシギ、ソリハシシギ、メダイチドリ、キョウジョシギなどもぼちぼち。

昨年と同じエリア で今年もズグロミゾゴイの繁殖がありました。ヒナは独り立ちしているようでした。 こちらのズグロミゾゴイのヒナ たちは巣立ちまでもう少しかかりそうです。

ムラサキサギも幼鳥を見る機会が増えてきました。各地で子育てが終わっているようです。

バンの繁殖はほとんど終わって、幼鳥を見る機会が増えているのですが、まだ小さなヒナを抱えたペアもいました。

リュウキュウアカショウビンは今季九つ目となる巣を発見。カラスが近くと親鳥が体当たりで追い払っていました。

今年3月に見つけたけがをしたアマサギに久しぶりに出会いました。やはり治ることはなく、飛べないようです。

4月1日に石垣島に飛来したブロンズトキは、1カ月の滞在となりました。以前は、常に19羽の群れで行動していましたが、ここ数日は分散して過ごしています。2羽仲良く連れ立って餌探しする個体もいて繁殖の予感がしています。^^

リュウキュウアカショウビンもまだ移動個体もいるようで日に日に数を増やしています。昨日はわが家の隣家の庭で2羽のアカショウビンが盛んにさえずっていました。移動個体と思われます。ほかにも中央運動公園や港の小さな公園でもアカショウビンが確認されています。

芝生には人馴れしたズグロミゾゴイが現れてミミズなどを捕まえていました。

休耕田にはシマアカモズのオス。まだこの時季になっても複数個体が農地で観察できます。

オグロシギは先日から滞在中。なぜかコアオアシシギと常に一緒にいます。バンはあちこちで巣を作っているようで、近くをほかの個体が通ると大喧嘩が始まっていました。

セイタカシギは群れがいなくなったと思ったら、数日して再び現れるなど入れ替わりが激しいようです。

造成地ではシロチドリがなんつがいか繁殖しているようで、この日はヒナ5羽と抱卵中を1ペア確認しました。ヒナは見つけ切れないだけでほかにも多くいると思われます。

The Glossy Ibis has now been on Ishigaki-jima for one month.

先日の シギ、チドリ合わせて11種 より少ないですが、田んぼの海岸でシギ、チドリ6種です。

今季初のコアオアシシギとセイタカシギやまとまった数のアオアシシギなどが確認できました。

季節外れのソリハシセイタカシギはまだ滞在しています。いつまでいる気なのでしょう?

同じ田んぼにはバンが4羽のヒナを連れてやってきました。ソリハシセイタカシギもバンの親子も農家の人が作業しても警戒心ゼロでした。^^

今季初のオグロシギが1羽、金武の田んぼにいました。ツメナガセキレイも初確認。こちらは、数羽が田植えが終わったばかりの田んぼの中や畦にいました。

カルガモは3羽、ツバメチドリやムナグロ、アオアシシギ、アカアシシギなど少しずつ秋の渡りの鳥たちが増えていました。処暑を過ぎても暑い沖縄ですが、秋の渡りは少しずつ進んでいるようです。

最近、金武で数を減らしているバンは、きょうは幼鳥、成鳥含めて10羽ほどがいました。渡ってきたのでしょうか?

漫湖と三角池と米須にオグロシギが1羽ずつ、合わせて3羽入りました。3カ所同時に入るとは興味深い。

南部の畑を車で走っているとツバメチドリ8羽の群れが上空を旋回中。どこに降りるのか双眼鏡で見ていたら、目の前の畑に3羽が降りた。残りの5羽は少し離れた畑に降りて見失ってしまった。今まさに渡ってきた群れが降りたようで、どの個体も疲れた様子でした。

三角池には、オグロシギの他にヒバリシギやセイタカシギ、ウズラシギ 、タシギなどが数羽ずついました。

バンは抱卵中で、親鳥がいないときに双眼鏡で覗いて見ると卵を二つ温めていた。

沖縄のカモは、ほとんど繁殖地へ渡って行きましたが、米須海岸にヒドリガモが1羽だけ残っていた。沖縄こどもの国のキンクロハジロのように怪我でもしているのだろうか?

旧暦の正月に当たる昨日からカンムリワシ週間が始まりました。沖縄本島には、カンムリワシは生息していないので 沖縄こどもの国 で飼育されているカンムリワシを見てきた。園内のアークおきまるでは、カンムリワシの他にもアカショウビンやカラスバト、ズアカアオバト、サシバ、ミサゴ、シロハラクイナなど沖縄の野鳥が展示してあります。リュウキュウオオコノハズクは、ふれあい動物園の近くの建物に展示してあるのですが、隠れてしまって全く見えません。同園で人工孵化に成功したオオコノハズクがふれあい動物園に出ている時がありますのでそれに期待しましょう。^^

カンムリワシを見たついでに園内の池を覗くと、キンクロハジロ40羽ほどの群れ。毎年、冬の間はこの池に越冬のため渡ってくるとのこと。来園者のやるコイの餌に餌付いていた。

他には、オオバンやバン、ゴイサギ、カワウ、カワセミ、シロハラなども池や周辺に生息していた。

帰り道、田んぼを覗くとヒドリガモが1羽で畔で休んでいた。
