Short-eared Owls have been wintering here again this season, as they did from around the end of last year. Surprisingly large numbers have turned up. A Long-eared Owl was also reported, but only for a single day — unfortunately I was not able to see it myself.

Out in the paddies during the day there are also wintering waders and plovers. Past mid-January I get the sense that they are slowly starting to move. I expect the main movement to begin around late February.

There was a Short-eared Owl staring intently at a thicket where mice were lurking. It seemed there was another one in the same area.

A Greater White-fronted Goose has been present for several days now, but for some reason the guide is apparently calling it a Greylag Goose. To me it is clearly a juvenile Greater White-fronted Goose… ^^; A juvenile Tundra Swan has also arrived on its own. On Iriomote, two Tundra Swans and a Siberian Crane are staying as well.

Multiple Pied Avocets have turned up across the island. That day I tallied six birds in total — a group of four and singles at two separate locations. In the paddies, Northern Lapwings, Pacific Golden Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Little Ringed Plovers, Common Greenshanks, Common Redshanks, Wood Sandpipers, Dunlins, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers and Black-winged Stilts are all wintering.

This season I had already confirmed the subspecies leucopsis and ocularis White Wagtails, but this day I was finally able to see the subspecies alba White Wagtail. That is pretty much how it goes every year.

A Common Hoopoe has arrived on Ishigaki. Numbers are lower than in spring, but several have been confirmed this season too.

The first Dusky Thrush of the season also confirmed. I heard a Pale Thrush calling but could not see it. Daurian Redstarts and Amur Stonechats are increasing.

Lesser White-fronted Goose, Taiga Bean Goose, and Greater White-fronted Goose are still present. Common Starling, White-cheeked Starling, White-shouldered Starling, Asian Glossy Starling, and Japanese Waxwing are also lingering and dropping in.

The Grey-headed Swamphen staying on Ishigaki has had a Hen Harrier turning up at its paddy field for the past few days, causing havoc. Several friends have come to Ishigaki to see the Swamphen, but it has become wary and is showing poorly, so they are having a hard time.

A Pheasant-tailed Jacana is also in residence and going about its business peacefully. I had noted Garganey several times over the past two weeks or so, but this time I finally managed to get it on camera.

I also recorded my first Greater White-fronted Goose and White-faced Wagtail of the season.

The paddies are lively, with Ruff, Dunlin, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint, Red-necked Stint, Common Snipe, and Black-winged Stilt, as well as Eastern Red-rumped Swallow, Amur Stonechat, Eastern Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Red-throated Pipit, and Little Bunting.

Two Ruddy Shelducks, two Lesser White-fronted Geese, a Common Crane, and a Greater White-fronted Goose are all on an extended stay. On this day I couldn't find the Greylag Goose or the Taiga Bean Goose. They were quite wary, so perhaps they've retreated to the Ampar wetlands area.

Found a Little Curlew while travelling for work. I always keep a 600 mm lens in the company car for moments like this. The Little Curlew was foraging in a pasture among a flock of Pacific Golden Plovers. Two Oriental Pratincoles were nearby as well.

In a separate paddy field, a Lesser White-fronted Goose, a Taiga Bean Goose, and a Greater White-fronted Goose are still present. The first Northern Pintail of the season has also arrived.

The Pheasant-tailed Jacana found on 12 October is still present, six days on. A tractor came through to work the field but the bird seemed largely unbothered and kept foraging.

The two Lesser White-fronted Geese are also still here — today is day ten. They continue to associate with the Taiga Bean Goose as before. Twelve Greater White-fronted Geese also arrived and briefly joined the group, but they eventually parted ways and are keeping to themselves.

Twelve Greater White-fronted Geese joined the group of two Lesser White-fronted Geese and one Taiga Bean Goose that arrived on 8 October, making for a lively gathering all at once. I forgot to photograph them, but several Northern Shovelers also arrived.

昨年、集団営巣したエリア にことしもツバメチドリが帰ってきました。40つがい80羽ほどが確認されています。すでにペアリングは済んでいるようでしたが、産卵、抱卵はこれからのようです。

雨の降る田んぼではアカガシラサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイなどが活発です。ジャワアカガシラサギもまだ滞在中です。

春の渡りもほぼ終わったので数は少ないですが、海岸にはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ソリハシシギ、アカアシシギなどが滞在しています。そんな中、なぜかマガンが1羽だけいました。ほとんどワンタッチでどこかへ飛んでいってしまいました。

今季2羽目のヨシガモを確認。 昨年の11月7日に飛来した25羽のマガン は1羽も脱落することなく滞在中。ヒシクイ1羽も加わって26羽の大所帯になりました。警戒心もそれほどなく観察しやすいです。別の場所には単独のヒシクイも滞在中。こちらは警戒心強め。

日を追うごとに寒くなる石垣島ですが、ガンの仲間も増えてきました。石垣島や沖縄では非常に珍しいカリガネもやってきました。ほかにはヒシクイが5羽、オオヒシクイが1羽、マガンが25羽の群れと別の場所に2羽滞在中。

先日の大陸から八重山にかけて吹き付けた強い北西の風に乗ってやってきたのかもしれません。

バライロムクドリ2羽とミドリカラスモドキ2羽が現れました。撮影し損ねましたが、アサクラサンショウクイも1羽確認。海上が荒れたので石垣島に避難してきたのでしょうか?

昨日飛来したマガン25羽のクロツラヘラサギ1羽も滞在。オオハシシギは滞在20日となりました。

今季は出会いが多いオジロトウネンは2羽飛来しました。

立冬のこの日、マガンが25羽飛来しました。石垣島はもちろん沖縄でも最大の飛来数だと思われます。これまで県内でもっとも多い飛来数は 2018年の11羽 なので倍以上の数に記録更新です。ついでにオナガガモ3羽もついてきました。

今季初となるキンクロハジロを確認。単独で水路を泳いでいました。

先月、50羽ほどの群れで入ったタゲリは島内で分散してあちこちの田んぼにいます。

ツメナガセキレイとムネアカタヒバリは群れで島内を移動していて、昨日は100羽以上の群れがいたのに今日はいないなんてことがよくあります。

ほかにはオグロシギやムナグロ、リュウキュウヨシゴイ、カンムリワシ、ムラサキサギ、シマアカモズ、サシバなどレギュラーメンバーに会えました。

沖縄では数少なく、石垣島では稀なヨシガモが飛来していました。ホオジロハクセキレイ、マガンも今季初確認しました。

オオハシシギは 10月20日に飛来した個体 がまだ滞在中で同じく 20日に別の場所で確認していたオグロシギ と一緒になっていました。

ヨシゴイは複数箇所で複数羽が逗留中。今季は観察する機会が多いです。

先日のチョウセンチョウゲンボウの写真 があまりにもひどかったので撮り直してきました。警戒心もなく観察しやすい個体です。チョウセンチョウゲンボウは完全に越冬モードなので来春までは見られそうです。

ヒシクイ、オオヒシクイ、マガンの群れは9羽まで増えました。最初は 10月にマガン1羽 、 11月にヒシクイ4羽 、いつの間にかオオヒシクイが3羽合流してしばらく8羽でいたのですが、つい数日前にさらにヒシクイが1羽追加され、現在は9羽の群れで越冬中。石垣島でこの数は初記録と思われます。西表島では過去にコハクチョウ9羽の記録があります。

サシバは沖縄本島に比べると少ないですが、それでも安定して越冬個体が見られます。

ツグミも日に日に数を増やしています。ことしはハチジョウツグミは少ないですが、石垣島では年によってはツグミが少なく、ハチジョウツグミだらけのこともあります。

ことし生まれのリュウキュウヨシゴイは換羽が進んでいました。

カワウとキンクロハジロ、ダイゼン幼鳥をそれぞれ今季初確認しました。

ダイゼンは成鳥が現れてから遅れること2カ月で幼鳥が到着しました。海岸でシギ、チドリを見ていると海上から黒い大きな鳥が登場。2羽のカワウでした。

水路ではコガモやハシビロガモの群れの中にキンクロハジロが1羽いました。

タゲリやマガンも先日から滞在中です。

レンカクは10月26日 より滞在中。警戒心のあまりない個体です。

クロツラヘラサギも散発的に渡ってきます。

今季初のオオバンを3羽確認しました。全国的に増えていますが、最近は沖縄でも越夏個体がいます。

先日の目を負傷している個体 とは別のマガンが田んぼに入りました。警戒心は多少あります。

カモ類はマガモ、ハシビロガモ、ヒドリガモが増えてきました。

田んぼに今季初となるマガンがいました。警戒心がない個体でしたが、右目を負傷しているようです。

コガモは水の張られた田んぼに浮いていました。近くにはカイツブリも。カイツブリは石垣島内で繁殖もしているのですが冬場は個体数が増えるのでどこからか渡ってきているのでしょう。

ジシギはほとんどが、タシギになっていました。越冬する個体も出ると思われます。

畔にはツメナガセキレイやムネアカタヒバリが多くなっています。

11月中旬に確認されたヒシクイ1羽とマガン11羽の群れが1カ月ぶりに戻ってきました。どこに行っていたのだろうか?

満潮の海中道路では、沖合の砂浜にメダイチドリがメインで500羽以上集まっていた。もっと近くで見られたらいいんだけど…。

直線距離で5キロほど離れたところにいた マガン11羽 が先日から 1羽で寂しく田んぼにいたヒシクイ と合流しました。^^

マガン(成鳥3羽、幼鳥8羽)とヒシクイ成鳥の群れは、ダムと田んぼを行き来しているようでした。ここは餌は豊富にあるのでしばらく滞在してくれると嬉しいのですが…。
