A White-naped Crane has arrived on Ishigaki for the first time in six years, since the first island record in 2020. It is a big, beautiful bird. A Siberian Crane has been wintering on Iriomote since last year — I would love to get over there to see it if the chance arises.

Crested Serpent Eagles are in the early stages of the breeding season; on fine days you can often hear a male and female calling back and forth.

Grey-faced Buzzards, Common Kestrels, Peregrine Falcons, Eastern Buzzards and Ospreys are all wintering on the island, but I have not seen an Upland Buzzard since I spotted one on Yonaguni in December last year — they seem scarce this season.

The first visit since October 2020. This time there were two adults. The Purple Heron looked no bigger than a Little Egret!!

マナヅルの記録は、沖縄本島や南大東島であるのですが石垣島ではありませんので初記録です。

今回、石垣島に現れたマナヅルは単独でやってきて田んぼの畔などで餌を拾っていました。近くのチュウサギなどと比べると異様なほどの大きさと存在感。マナヅルは出水や諫早で何度か見ていますが、石垣島で見るとまた違った趣がありますね。

1月14日に名古屋から再び福岡入り。せっかくなので諫早名物のナベコウを見てやろうと義母の車を借りて高速道路をひた走り。2時間半ほどかかりました。遠かった…。^^;

広大な諫早干拓なのに事前の情報ゼロで訪れたので、探せど探せどナベコウは見つからず。あきらめかけた時、上空の高いところを黒っぽい怪鳥が飛んでいます。双眼鏡でのぞいてみると念願のナベコウでした。写真を数枚撮り、降り立った地点を確認の上、現場に現場に駆けつけるも見つけられず…。大きく目立つ鳥ですが、水路に降りてしまうと意外と見つけにくいようです。

干拓内では、マナヅルやコチョウゲンボウ、ハイイロチュウヒ、オオジュリン、ミヤマガラスのほか、石垣島でもおなじみのタヒバリやタゲリ、タシギ、ヘラサギ、クロツラヘラサギなどがいました。
