Ruddy Kingfishers increased sharply once April arrived. Some pairs have already formed and can be seen excavating nest holes. The pair near my house was nesting in a rotting tree. I confirmed nest-hole digging at several other spots as well.

Ryukyu Flycatcher song can be heard here and there. I also came across a pair collecting nesting material.

The Crested Serpent Eagle has entered breeding season too. Other resident birds on the island are equally active as the breeding season gets underway.

Working my way around the rice fields, I heard a Ryukyu Flycatcher calling from the forest edge. Searching for it, I found a male in song. For some reason it also moved into the shrubs at the edge of the paddies.

Visiting Banna Park for the first time in a while, I had good encounters with several Ruddy Kingfishers. Males were conspicuous, which may mean many pairs have already moved into incubation.

I also spotted one Red Collared Dove. Perhaps tired from the crossing, it perched on a wire and occasionally closed its eyes.

In the paddies towards evening, a Ryukyu Sparrowhawk came down onto a farm track and looked around. Watching it, I could see it was targeting a Eurasian Tree Sparrow that had ducked into a thicket.

The Ruddy Kingfisher that briefly appeared on Ishigaki in mid-February had been silent for over a month afterwards. From around the end of March calls suddenly increased, and on the 29th I could hear one from home. On the 31st I got a sighting, and on 1 April I managed a photograph. Exactly the same pattern as every year. May and June are the best time to see and photograph Ruddy Kingfishers here.

It's a bumper year for Common Hoopoe, and a third wave has arrived — six individuals were recorded across the island on this day.

Ryukyu Flycatchers are singing actively, and I keep coming across pairs moving around together.

Warm days have continued, and I can now hear Ryukyu Flycatchers singing as I drive the forest roads. Common Emerald Doves are calling too. I also confirmed a Ruddy Kingfisher calling from my house — earlier than usual, possibly due to the mild winter.

Crested Serpent Eagles are in the early stages of the breeding season; wherever I go — rice paddies, sugarcane fields, forest roads — I find them in pairs.

Eastern Yellow Wagtails look set to finish the season without ever reaching their peak wintering numbers. Could this also be a mild-winter effect, with fewer flocks moving south from the continent?

A Ryukyu Flycatcher — whose calls I always hear but rarely get a proper view of — was singing beside a forest road. It was singing from less than a metre off the ground. On the mainland, Narcissus Flycatcher tends to use higher perches, but perhaps on Ishigaki Island, with no Japanese Robin to compete with, it is free to use the lower storey?

Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfishers are at various breeding stages; some pairs have still not started nesting.

短時間バードウオッチングでしたが、石垣島の留鳥が勢揃いしました。^^

公園や林道などでリュウキュウアカショウビン数羽。巣穴堀りをしている個体やすでに抱卵に入っているペアなど出会えました。

キンバトの出会いは5月中旬ごろから非常に多くなり、ご多分に漏れず落下して裂開したオオバギの種子をついばんでいます。

リュウキュウキビタキは今年生まれの個体がすでにさえずりながら縄張りを主張。警戒心は弱めで縄張りの見回りなどしっかり観察できました。

リュウキュウコノハズクも数ペアが抱卵中です。

自宅近くのカタグロトビ の子育てを観察していたら、リュウキュウツミの巣を見つけました。カタグロトビの巣からほんの20〜30メートルしか離れておらず驚きました。ツミはほかのツミが近くを通ると追いかけて縄張りから排除していましたが、カタグロトビに対しては知らんぷり。カタグロトビもカラスにはアタックするのですが、ツミのことは気にかけていないようでした。不思議です。

石垣島は、繁殖鳥たちのベストシーズンに入っています。最近、忙しくて久しぶりの更新となりました。^^;

キンバトは子育て真っ盛りのようで雌雄が餌を取っては巣へ運んでいました。

リュウキュウコノハズク、リュウキュウアオバズクは抱卵中のペアが増えてきています。

リュウキュウキビタキも繁殖中ですが、こちらはどこにん巣を作っているのか全く分かりません。

エリグロアジサシも繁殖のため渡ってきました。この日は、8羽が海上を飛ぶのを確認しました。

Female Emerald Dove. The plumage is quite worn. They nest in places where they have to push through Arenga palm, so I suppose the feathers get damaged easily during the breeding season. The male was not nearly as worn.

八重山、石垣島の夏の小鳥と言えばリュウキュウキビタキでしょうか。この時季、鳴き声は聞こえるのですが姿はなかなか見せてくれませんが、根気よく探せば枝でさえずる姿を拝めます。このオスのリュウキュウキビタキは、縄張りの見回りなのか、さえずっては枝を変えて移動していました。

アカショウビンはどこに行ってもいます。警戒心の薄い個体なら長時間の観察も可能です。もちろん観察、撮影する車内の人影が見えないような簡易的なブラインドを利用したりしますが…。

カンムリワシは現在抱卵中のペアがほとんどで田んぼやサトウキビ畑でめぐりあう機会は減りましたが、林道などでは遭遇します。

石垣島の留鳥たちの繁殖は早いです。 オリイヤマガラはすでに巣立ち 、私の勤める会社の社屋に巣を作ったリュウキュウツバメは3月後半に巣立ちしました。

シロハラクイナは親鳥2羽で6羽のヒナを連れて歩いていました。前の日にも見ているのでお気に入りの場所のようです。

昨日、自宅のベランダからアサクラサンショウクイを発見したので、付近を探しているとカタグロトビのペアを発見。何度か自宅前のサトウキビ畑で見ている個体だと思われます。農地にぽつんとある小さな雑木林で繁殖しそうです。

リュウキュウツミも繁殖期に入っており、メスが鳴いて威嚇しながらカラスを追い払っていました。オスは見当たりませんでしたが、昨年、一昨年も同所で子育てしているので今年も期待がかかります。

リュウキュウキビタキもあちこちで盛んにさえずっています。農地を車で走っているとリュウキュウキビタキのさえずりが聞こえてきました。小さな雑木林なので、よく探してみるとさえずっている若い個体を発見。まさかこんな場所にまでいるとは思いませんでした。

リュウキュウコノハズクもすでにペアができており、オスがメスを営巣木に誘っています。 先日は、昨年も繁殖に成功しているペアと思われる オスが樹洞からメスを呼ぶ姿 が観察できました。今夜は、新規の場所でオスがメスを巣穴に呼ぶ姿が確認できました。最近、自宅に引き込まれる電線にリュウキュウコノハズクのオスがやってきてしきりにメスを呼んでいます。通風口を狙っているのかもしれません…。^^; 近々、巣箱をかけたいと思います。

キンバトは姿は見えませんが「ウー、ウー」というさえずりと呼ぶにはあまりにも低音の鳴き声がよく聞こえるようになりました。

この時期、公園や林道などあちこちから聞こえてくるリュウキュウキビタキの鳴き声ですが、その美しい姿を見る機会は非常に少ないです。

今朝は、リュウキュウキビタキを撮影するため、公園内の林道をいくつか歩き足で探しました。結構な密度でさえずりは聞こえるのですが、やはり茂みの奥や谷の底などからで姿はおがめず。

あきらめかけたころ、車道と林道の間の比較的奥行きが薄い茂みからはっきりとリュウキュウキビタキのさえずりが聞こえてきました。これはいけるんじゃないかと探すも見つからず。念のため、裏の県道に出て探すと浅い水路にかかる木の枝でリュウキュウキビタキのオスを発見!! やっと今季初撮影に漕ぎ着けました…。^^;

林道ではサクラランが数カ所で花をつけていました。これから夏までかわいらしいサクラランの開花を楽しむことができます。

The pale leg colour and plumage made me wonder at first whether it might be a first-year bird, comparing it with mainland Narcissus Flycatcher, but it appears to be second-year.

ムギマキ情報をもらい見にいくも空振り。仕方ないので近くを探索してみると藪の中からノゴマの地鳴きが聞こえてくるではありませんか。移動する影が見えるので少し待ってみるとなんとか写真に納められる位置に一瞬だけ出てきてくれました。ノゴマは先日の与那国島で地鳴きを何度も聞いていたので思わぬところで役に立ちました。

ノゴマはウグイスと付かず離れずで一緒に移動しているようでした。ウグイスは目の前まで出てきてくれました。この時期、石垣島ではウグイス、カラフトウグイスが見られます。

リュウキュウキビタキは餌場にしている場所に何度も出てきました。おそらく同じ個体。

息子のリクエストでカンムリワシを探しに田んぼと林道へ。それぞれ、カラスに追われて茂みに逃げ込む幼鳥と成鳥を見ることができました。

田植えの終わったばかりの田んぼには、ハリオシギが飛来していました。この秋、初めてのハリオシギです。セイタカシギやタカブシギ、アオアシシギなども増えてきました。

林道ではリュウキュウキビタキのオスに出くわしました。

ほかには、ヒクイナ、アカショウビン幼鳥、リュウキュウヨシゴイ、ムラサキサギなど八重山らしい野鳥に遭遇。

昨日から愛鳥週間が始まりましたので、久しぶりにやんばるに赴き、繁殖シーズンに入ったホントウアカヒゲやリュウキュウキビタキなどをめでてきた。アオバズクは、求愛給餌をしたり、メスが樹洞に入って座り心地を確認していたので近いうちに産卵するようです。ヤンバルクイナは、何羽か道路を横切ったりするのですが、写真に収められず…。残念ながらリュウキュウオオコノハズクには、全く出会えなかった。^^; アカショウビンやサンコウチョウも鳴き声は聞こえるのですが、やんばるの深い森では姿を見ることはなかった。

林道を歩いているとホントウアカヒゲのメスに警戒されました。近くで営巣していたようです。

沖縄本島では、鳴き声は聞こえてもなかなか姿が拝めないリュウキュウキビタキが小枝にいました。数枚撮影したのち森の奥へ帰って行った。偶然の出会いにドキッとした瞬間でした。

アカショウビンの営巣を観察していたら、リュウキュウキビタキが親子でやってきました。^^ 巣立って間もないようでした。

三脚にカメラを据えてじっとしていると私の頭上に来たりしていました。成鳥にしては警戒心の薄いリュウキュウキビタキでしたが、 昨年のリュウキュウキビタキ のように動画が撮れるほど同じ場所でさえずってはくれませんでした。^^;

Ryukyu Flycatcher males often sing from deep inside the undergrowth, making them difficult to photograph, but this one had come out to a branch at the forest edge to sing. ^^

The differences from the mainland Narcissus Flycatcher are the call, the colour of the throat and breast, and the back colour. The mainland bird's call is complex, while the Ryukyu Flycatcher's is a simple "fee-fee." The Ryukyu Flycatcher also lacks the orange on the throat seen in the Narcissus Flycatcher — from the throat down to the vent it is a vivid yellow throughout. And while the mainland Narcissus Flycatcher has a black back, the Ryukyu Flycatcher's is an olive-tinged black, somewhat duller.

リュウキュウキビタキのソングポストを発見しました。しばらく、リュウキュウキビタキの歌声を堪能できました。^^

八重山三鳴鳥と言われるだけあってかなりの歌い手です。

3月31日に初鳴きを聞いて、4月4日に一瞬姿を見て以来アカショウビンを探すも見つからず…。
