Passed through Banna Park. I had good encounters with multiple Ruddy Kingfishers. One adult was feeding a fledgling that had grown to nearly adult size.

The Crested Serpent Eagles are in the final stages of raising their young. The beautiful white-plumaged juveniles should be appearing soon.

I also recorded the first Grey Wagtail of the season — a small group of four.

The Eurasian Tree Sparrow chicks that had been breeding in the nest box on my house have also fledged. The garden is lively these days.

This Ruddy Kingfisher was still feeding its fledgling. The adult was relaxed, but the fledgling was an extremely wary individual.

Birding in the gaps between work assignments on Yonaguni Island. As I cruised the forest road with a sense that autumn migration was well and truly getting under way, I spotted a fig tree that birds were gathering in. While watching a flock of Warbling White-eyes, a yellow warbler flew into my field of view. I got it in the binoculars — it was a Willow Warbler!! It was moving from branch to branch, apparently picking off small insects.

I also had first records for the trip of Chinese Sparrowhawk, Oriental Dollarbird, Dark-sided Flycatcher, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Grey-streaked Flycatcher, Garganey, Common Snipe, and White-shouldered Starling. Yonaguni Island delivers, as always. ^^

Arctic Warbler makes an appearance. It stands out clearly — obviously different from the other Japanese leaf warblers.

I did some birdwatching during free time on a work trip to Yonaguni Island.

The timing was good — in a short while I was able to see Oriental Plover, Black Redstart, Citrine Wagtail, Common Hoopoe, Pin-tailed Snipe, and Swinhoe's Snipe. It was all thanks to the senior birders staying on the island!!

Seven Large Sand Plovers arrived early in the morning at the go-to spot on Yonaguni Island. I got the message while I was at work, so I was fidgeting.

The Chinese Blackbird, harbinger of spring on Ishigaki, has arrived. I heard its call nearby as well, so it seems multiple birds are staying. Brown-headed Thrush, Pale Thrush, and Dusky Thrush migration also appears to be approaching its peak — small flocks can be found in patches of grassland in coastal settlements and similar spots.

I heard a Hooded Crane was staying in the north of the island, so I went to have a look. It seemed to favour a field prepared for sugarcane planting, with a pineapple plantation as a backdrop.

Cinnamon Bittern and Purple Heron are also full of vitality with the feel of spring in the air.

A Common Blackbird turned up in a good patch of habitat. Looks like it may stay a while.

While I was eating my packed lunch in the park, a juvenile Malayan Night Heron wandered up to me. It had not been fed by people — it just happened to approach. Even so, the lack of wariness in a juvenile Malayan Night Heron is worrying.

About three Chinese Pond Herons were wintering in the paddies. They seem to be foraging in a variety of habitats — dropping into drainage channels and disappearing into the grass.

I caught up for the first time in a while with "Hayate," the juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle released in November last year. It had moved more than 10 km south in a straight line from the release point. The area is close to town and has heavy traffic, so I worry it may be hit by a vehicle.

Red Collared Doves turned up at two locations, four birds in total. Grey Wagtail is also a first for the season. From here on, migrants with a distinctly autumnal feel will keep arriving on Ishigaki one after another.

Painted Snipe were at two locations — two males and two females. In this paddy it was one male and two females.

The last Ruddy Kingfisher of the season fledged successfully. I found the nest on June 24, confirmed 2 eggs on July 3, and the chicks fledged on August 12 and 13 in quick succession.

There has been large-scale development in the area, and perhaps because suitable nest sites were scarce, the pair nested in a Formosan subterranean termite colony in a horsetail casuarina tree alongside a fairly busy road. I worried about traffic accidents right after fledging, but they made it safely and disappeared into the shrubs on the ranch.

I recorded my first Grey Wagtail of the season — the usual time of year, the usual spot.

Crested Serpent Eagles are approaching their fledging season too, and the adults are turning up regularly in farmland and cultivated fields.

A Ruddy Kingfisher chick that fledged on the 12th. This was taken on the 13th, the second day after fledging, and it was already flying about fairly freely.

Confirmed the first Pin-tailed Snipe of the season. Spring passage Pin-tailed Snipe on Ishigaki are a rare find. Swinhoe's Snipe are also present, cycling in and out, while Common Snipe remain the most numerous.

Among the curlews, a Far Eastern Curlew arrived after the Eurasian Whimbrel. It may be the individual some university students spotted at sea just after leaving Ishigaki port on the Yonaguni ferry a few days ago. The seabirding on that route this spring was apparently quite good — though the sea was rough, so you need to steel yourself before boarding. ^^;

I got to see the Eurasian Bittern that has been wintering since last year, for the first time in a while. As usual, it showed no wariness at all. The several Chinese Pond Herons present were starting to come into breeding plumage.

The dark-morph Grey-faced Buzzard that has been overwintering on Ishigaki Island every year since 2018 has returned again this year. It was a juvenile in the first year, so it is now 5 years old. It has been gradually becoming less wary, and this year I was able to observe it at quite close range.

The Black-winged Kite first appeared on Ishigaki Island in 2015 and has been breeding steadily ever since, to the point where it can now be seen all over the island — and it has finally moved into town as well. On this day I confirmed two birds flying together over the MaxValu in Maesato. I also frequently see them foraging on the wasteland to the east of Ishigaki City Hall.

今季初のハリオシギ、タカブシギ幼鳥、クサシギ、キセキレイが到着しました。

シロハラクイナは2回目の繁殖なのか真っ黒なヒナを連れたペアが目立ちます。

年越し越冬中のムジセッカは、気温が上がると見えやすいところに出てくる印象です。餌の小虫が新芽を求めて枝先に出てくるのでしょうか。

今季は大変数の多いコホオアカは群れで島内を移動しているのか、新たな群れが入ったのか分かりませんが、200オーバーを確認しました。日が経つにつれて分散している感じです。春の渡り組かもしれません。ムネアカタヒバリも混じっていました。

アトリも50オーバーの群れを沿岸林で確認。こちらも春の渡り組だと思います。

8月25日に今季初確認したマミジロツメナガセキレイ は日々、数を増やしています。幼鳥も初確認しました。

A week after the adults arrived, juvenile Eastern Yellow Wagtails also turned up.

ハクセキレイ数十羽のうち、3分の1ほどがホオジロハクセキレイでした。その中にタイワンハクセキレイが2羽。ツメナガセキレイやキセキレイ、ムネアカタヒバリ、ヒバリなども合わせて相当数が群れを形成しています。日々、増減があるので入れ替わりもあるようです。

ホオジロハクセキレイ、ツメナガセキレイ、キセキレイ合わせて40羽ほどの群れが、強風を避けて田んぼに集まっていました。

The White Wagtail stood out, being noticeably larger than the Eastern Yellow Wagtail and Grey Wagtail.

11月に入り、ハクセキレイやタヒバリ、ムネアカタヒバリの数が増え、田んぼが賑やかになっています。石垣島では数少ないアトリも複数箇所で確認しました。

イワミセキレイ、ムネアカタヒバリ、(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイの3種を今季初確認しました。

石垣島のイワミセキレイは例年、アカハラダカの渡ってくる9月中旬ごろの飛来が多いのですが、今年は少し遅めの登場です。久しぶりのイワミセキレイですが、ちょっと小ぶりで色合いが渋く、なぜか尾羽を左右にゆっくり振るところなどちょっと変わり者ないい鳥です。^^ キセキレイと行動を共にしていましたが、全長20センチのキセキレイと比べると全長15センチのイワミセキレイはやり小さいです。

ムネアカタヒバリはこれから冬にかけて数をどんどん増やしていき、まもなくタヒバリやマミジロタヒバリなども加わり石垣島の田んぼの小鳥が楽しくなります。

(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイは例年だとマミジロツメナガセキレイとほとんど変わらない時季にやってくるはずなのですが、ことしは待てど暮らせど見当たらず。10月に入ってやっと(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイの群れに出会えました。

キセキレイは林道から芝生、田んぼまでいろいろな環境にいますが、1羽から数羽の群れでいます。

先日同様、亜種カラアカモズ らしいアカモズが多く観察されています。亜種シマアカモズより多いぐらいです。

カンムリワシは目の黒い個体に出会いました。たまにこんなのが生まれるようですね。

キセキレイは8月も終わりに近づくと一気に数を増やしました。今日は8羽の群れ。

台風などの試練をくぐり抜けてリュウキュウサンコウチョウのヒナが1羽巣立ちました。台風4号の強風では枝が折れてしまい、3羽いたヒナも1羽になってしまいましたが、なんとか巣立っていきました。

近くの林道では今季初確認となるキセキレイが1羽。林道を行ったり来たりしながら餌をついばんでいました。

今季初のキセキレイを2カ所で1羽ずつ確認。秋の渡りもここから加速していきます。

シギとチドリは、タカブシギ、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギ、トウネン、タヒバリ、セイタカシギあたりが日替わりで入っていますが、数はまだまだ少なめです。

カンムリワシは子育てが終わった成鳥がちょこちょこ出るようになってきました。

ハクセキレイ20羽ほどの群れにタイワンハクセキレイとホオジロハクセキレイがいました。タヒバリ2羽やキセキレイ、ツメナガセキレイなども付近にいますが、ハクセキレイとは一緒に行動していないようです。ツメナガセキレイとキセキレイは一緒に行動していた。

違う田んぼですが、妙に白いアカモズがいました。シマアカモズのオスだと思われますが、かなり遠くからでも白さが目立っていました。すぐに飛んでしまい、背面や横からの写真は撮れず…。^^;

キセキレイは白化個体と思っていたら、同じようなのが近くに3羽も!! 白化個体がこんなにいるはずないのでよくよく見てみたら三列風切の一部が脱落して白い部分が目立っているだけのような…。^^;
