The Ashy Drongo from the other day appears to be in full wintering mode — when I went back to check a week later it was still in exactly the same spot.

Crested Serpent Eagles are very active on the farmland and I regularly come across pairs. Along the coast, Siberian Sand Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones, Common Greenshanks, Grey-tailed Tattlers and Common Sandpipers are all wintering.

The White-bellied Drongo was in exactly the same spot as a week ago. It was predating something in the order Hymenoptera. I hope it stays until spring.

With shorebirds on the increase, I spent the entire day searching for waders. The result: starting with Asian Dowitcher, I recorded Pectoral Sandpiper, Little Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Pin-tailed Snipe, Greater Sand Plover, and more — 21 species of waders in total. Seeing this many species in a single day is one of the great pleasures of this time of year. ^^

Shorebirds are wintering along the coast and in the rice paddies. The most numerous are Greater Sand Plovers, Siberian Sand Plovers, and Ruddy Turnstones on the coast. Unusually for Ishigaki Island, a flock of Grey Plovers is also wintering.

Shorebird numbers in the paddies this season are low; species present include Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, and Green Sandpiper.

Oriental Pratincole and Kentish Plover are breeding well, with many fledged chicks on view. The Oriental Pratincoles in particular have formed a flock of nearly 60 juveniles. At the reclaimed land site, chicks from several Kentish Plover pairs have fledged and are running around energetically.

The Little Terns, which share the same site as the Kentish Plovers in a colony, had their nests flooded by heavy rain brought by the typhoon. Some eggs that had been submerged for several hours did hatch, but their prognosis looks poor.

In the rice paddies, juvenile Common Redshank arrived for the first time this season. Every year, Common Redshank is the first shorebird species to arrive as a juvenile.

Migrating waders and plovers are gradually increasing. Wood Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint and Grey-tailed Tattler have arrived in the paddies. On the coast, Greater Sand Plover, Siberian Sand Plover and Grey-tailed Tattler numbers are building.

Three Gull-billed Terns had been flying around in the morning, so when I found a break in my work and headed back out with the camera, they had been replaced by a Chinese Egret… ^^;

Turnover among shorebirds in the fields and along the coast has intensified.

In the rice fields, Curlew Sandpipers in beautiful summer plumage were mixed in with a flock of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. A Little Stint also in summer plumage has arrived, and nine Black-tailed Godwits have come in, adding to the activity.

Pin-tailed Snipe, Swinhoe's Snipe, and Common Snipe are staying on, including some long-term individuals.

Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, and Marsh Sandpiper are beginning to show noticeably contrasting summer plumage.

Along the coast, large numbers of Siberian Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Grey-tailed Tattler, Ruddy Turnstone, Red-necked Stint, and Eurasian Whimbrel have been arriving.

Two Pied Avocets have arrived. They may be individuals already wandering around the island — four more Pied Avocets have also been confirmed elsewhere.

The Common Crane is also in wintering mode. At first it was extremely wary, but now not at all. ^^

A Eurasian Spoonbill is also staying on — a friendly individual. Wintering waders are showing up as well.

Following the previous two adults, a juvenile Ruddy Shelduck has now arrived. The adults were extremely wary, but this juvenile showed almost no wariness — perhaps a sign of its youth — and was easy to observe.

The Greylag Goose has been staying a long time; it looks like it may well winter over. Taiga Bean Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Lesser White-fronted Goose, and Common Crane are also still present.

On the coast, small numbers of Siberian Sand Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Pacific Golden Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones, Common Greenshanks, and Dunlins are staying on. In the paddies, Spotted Redshanks, Black-winged Stilts, Wood Sandpipers, Long-toed Stints, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, and Common Snipe are conspicuous. Whiskered Terns — both adults and juveniles — are also still present.

This season, the starling family is represented by several species but numbers are low.

Dusky Thrushes, Pale Thrushes, Brown-headed Thrushes, and Eyebrowed Thrushes have started arriving.

The third Ruddy Shelduck of the season was a juvenile — in the process of moulting from juvenile plumage into first breeding plumage.

The Greylag Goose that appeared about ten days ago is still here. Alongside the Greylag Goose, Ishigaki currently hosts a Lesser White-fronted Goose, a Greater White-fronted Goose, a Taiga Bean Goose, a Tundra Swan, and a Common Crane — quite an unlikely lineup for a southern island.

The juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle was the ninth individual of the season. A very active bird, it was catching prey in the rice paddies and mown grasslands.

Caspian Terns have also been coming in over the past few days. They usually stay for a while each year but rarely winter over. On the coast, Siberian Sand Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Little Ringed Plovers, Pacific Golden Plovers, Grey-tailed Tattlers, Common Greenshanks, and Ruddy Turnstones are present in fluctuating numbers.

I had already seen a flock of five Greylag Geese at the end of last year on Okinawa Island, but this was my first encounter with the species on Ishigaki Island.

鳥見る時間が全く取れなくて海岸は久しぶりの訪問。オオメダイチドリが多く滞在、メダイチドリはオオメダイチドリより少なめでした。幼鳥の到着はまだです。

チュウシャクシギは10羽ほどを確認。今季初となる幼鳥も2羽混じっていました。ソリハシシギは砂浜を爆走してカニを捕まえていた。

キョウジョシギ、キアシシギ、アオアシシギなども滞在。

来月にはシギやチドリの秋の渡りが始まろうかという時期にソリハシセイタカシギが田んぼに飛来しました。2日間滞在したのち、旅立って行きました。北上したのか南下したのか…。

海岸ではメダイチドリ30羽ほどの群れの中にオオメダイチドリが1羽だけ混じっていました。ムナグロ、キアシシギ、キョウジョシギなども滞在中。

リュウキュウツバメが複数羽、頻繁に砂浜に降りるのですが何をしているのでしょうか? 塩分補給?

毎日、雨が続く石垣島です。今月は雨の降らない日はほとんどなく、日照時間も例年の40%以下な異常事態となっています。

雨が小降りになった隙をついて少しだけ鳥見。

アカショウビンは抱卵に入っているペアがほとんどとなっているようです。

カタグロトビは同じサトウキビ畑に3羽。昨年生まれの若い個体は比較的近くで観察できました。

キンバトは新居近くで毎日、オス個体が現れます。雨が降ると電線や枯れ木にチュウダイズアカアオバトがたくさん並びます。

石垣島で当たり年なハジロクロハラアジサシはクロハラアジサシの群れに1羽。牧草地でバッタを捕まえています。

海岸のシギ、チドリも渡りが終わり寂しい限りですが、メダイチドリやキョウジョシギなどが少し滞在中です。

昨年、集団営巣したエリア にことしもツバメチドリが帰ってきました。40つがい80羽ほどが確認されています。すでにペアリングは済んでいるようでしたが、産卵、抱卵はこれからのようです。

雨の降る田んぼではアカガシラサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイなどが活発です。ジャワアカガシラサギもまだ滞在中です。

春の渡りもほぼ終わったので数は少ないですが、海岸にはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ソリハシシギ、アカアシシギなどが滞在しています。そんな中、なぜかマガンが1羽だけいました。ほとんどワンタッチでどこかへ飛んでいってしまいました。

コアジサシが飛来しました。3羽確認。海岸ではメダイチドリ、オオメダイチドリ、ムナグロ、キアシシギ、トウネン、キョウジョシギなどが多く飛来しています。

いろいろ忙しくて鳥を見に行けない日が続き、約3週間ぶりのバードウオッチングへ。といっても短時間のうちに海岸を2カ所ほど回っただけでした。

海岸はシギやチドリでずいぶんにぎやかになっていました。春の渡りが始まったようです。

何度か確認していてもなかなか写真に撮れないヒメクイナの写真がやっと撮れました。

石垣島では少ないツルシギは今季初確認。オジロトウネン、ヒバリシギ、オオハシシギ、メダイチドリ、シロチドリなどは元気に滞在中。

職場と自宅周辺で少しだけ鳥見。

今季初のハシビロガモとオナガガモは前日、初認していましたが写真は撮れずでしたが、この日、ハシビロガモだけは写真の記録が残せました。シマアジは5羽の群れがやってきました。

海岸ではムナグロやダイゼン、キアシシギ、トウネン、メダイチドリなどが滞在中。

サトウキビ畑には警戒心の弱いカタグロトビがいました。石垣島のカタグロトビはずいぶん増えて、田んぼやサトウキビ畑、牧草地に行けばたいてい見られます。

今や田んぼか畑で夕方になればふつうに見られるカタグロトビですが、最近はさらに出会いが多くなっています。この日は、職場から自宅に帰る20分の間に3羽確認しました。わが家のベランダからも夕方や朝方、獲物を探しながら移動するカタグロトビが見られます。

ベニバトは島内複数箇所で10羽が先週から滞在中。成鳥、幼鳥が混じった群れで、イネ科の草の種子についています。

ハリオシギもまだまだ見られます。今年こそ、越冬個体の長期観察を実現したいですね。

今季初のミユビシギとコガモも確認しました。石垣島では生息環境を選ぶミユビシギの飛来は少ないです。

夏羽を少し残したダイゼンも確認。こちらも当地では少なく、夏羽を残した個体はさらに少ないので得した気分です。^^

田んぼや海岸には越冬組のほか通過組が日替わりで入ってにぎやかです。

石垣島をかすりもしなかった台風14号の通過後、少しだけ海岸と田んぼの巡回。今季初確認のオバシギが2羽のほかはほぼいつものメンバーでした。

友人から、ホウロクシギとダイシャクシギがいると連絡をもらいましたが、回る時間はなし!! やはり飛翔力の秀でた大型シギは台風が当たらないと石垣島にはなかなか降りないですね。

田んぼと海岸を巡回。キアシシギとキョウジョシギ、セイタカシギ、イソシギで幼鳥を初確認しました。本土からはトウネン、ソリハシシギなどの幼鳥飛来情報ありますが、石垣島ではまだ未確認ですね。

田んぼはシギ、チドリの数、種類とも多くなっていますが、海岸はそれほどでもありません。越冬組が到着すればもう少し賑やかになると思われます。

複数羽いたハリオシギは残すところ1羽のみとなりました。チュウジシギはたくさんいます。タシギはまもなく到着するものと思われます。
