The Ashy Drongo from the other day appears to be in full wintering mode — when I went back to check a week later it was still in exactly the same spot.

Crested Serpent Eagles are very active on the farmland and I regularly come across pairs. Along the coast, Siberian Sand Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones, Common Greenshanks, Grey-tailed Tattlers and Common Sandpipers are all wintering.

The White-bellied Drongo was in exactly the same spot as a week ago. It was predating something in the order Hymenoptera. I hope it stays until spring.

Two consecutive days of bad weather brought large numbers of shorebirds and plovers — apparently mid-migration — dropping in to localized spots. The biggest group was Black-winged Stilts, over 400 birds, followed by Wood Sandpipers at 200+. There were too many to keep counting, so I stopped midway. ^^;

Pied Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, and Garganey also arrived, making the paddies extremely lively — though two days later everything was back to normal. ^^;

Along the coast, Greater Sand Plover numbers increased, and a small number of Grey Plovers also came through.

Ishigaki had a rough day under the influence of a tropical depression. When the rain eased I did the rounds of the paddies and found the first Broad-billed Sandpiper of the season had arrived — encountered in a puddle in a sugarcane field. Out on the grassland I also picked up first records of Curlew Sandpiper and Grey Plover. Bad weather does have a way of pushing birds into unexpected places.

Shorebirds are wintering along the coast and in the rice paddies. The most numerous are Greater Sand Plovers, Siberian Sand Plovers, and Ruddy Turnstones on the coast. Unusually for Ishigaki Island, a flock of Grey Plovers is also wintering.

Shorebird numbers in the paddies this season are low; species present include Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, and Green Sandpiper.

Little Stint, winter plumage.

A Black Stork has arrived on Ishigaki. One came in last year too, and they turn up occasionally before that, but they are always quite wary and surprisingly difficult to photograph. This individual, however, could be observed fairly close-up and at leisure — for a Black Stork, anyway.

The Tufted Duck is my first of the season. A juvenile had already been confirmed last month, but this was my first sighting. On the coast there were Grey Plovers, Siberian Sand Plovers, Kentish Plovers, Red-necked Stints, and Sanderlings. Two Caspian Terns were flying distantly. I expect Caspian Tern numbers will increase a little more toward year's end.

Black Stork, juvenile. My wife saw one last year but I missed it. This individual was not especially wary for a Black Stork, and we were able to photograph and observe it at close range.

I went to Nagoya for a post-operative check-up after cervical spine surgery and did some birding while I was there. After three years of trying, I finally got to see Western Sandpiper. I also observed Broad-billed Sandpiper, Great Knot, and Red-necked Stint.

Along with the Western Sandpiper, Baikal Teal and Japanese Wagtail were lifers for me.

The Little Stint was at first sitting and resting in a hollow, but there was something about it that felt slightly off. ^^ Still, once it mixes into a flock of Red-necked Stints it gets difficult.

昨年、集団営巣したエリア にことしもツバメチドリが帰ってきました。40つがい80羽ほどが確認されています。すでにペアリングは済んでいるようでしたが、産卵、抱卵はこれからのようです。

雨の降る田んぼではアカガシラサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイなどが活発です。ジャワアカガシラサギもまだ滞在中です。

春の渡りもほぼ終わったので数は少ないですが、海岸にはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ソリハシシギ、アカアシシギなどが滞在しています。そんな中、なぜかマガンが1羽だけいました。ほとんどワンタッチでどこかへ飛んでいってしまいました。

コアジサシが飛来しました。3羽確認。海岸ではメダイチドリ、オオメダイチドリ、ムナグロ、キアシシギ、トウネン、キョウジョシギなどが多く飛来しています。

仕事中にヤツガシラがいると連絡をもらい、時間を見つけて行きましたが、すでに移動した後か見つからず。副産物としてジャワアカガシラサギを発見しました。

沈砂池のメジロガモは、ほかのカモがほとんど消えたのにまだ滞在中。

海岸では春の渡りのシギやチドリが入れ替わり飛来します。この日はオオメダイチドリが特に多かったです。ほかには、シロチドリが数十羽にキョウジョシギ十数羽、ダイゼンが数羽、アオアシシギ、トウネン、ムナグロ、イソシギなど。

田んぼでは越冬組と渡り組のタシギが混在しています。セイタカシギやアカアシシギ、タカブシギなども増えてきました。

いろいろ忙しくて鳥を見に行けない日が続き、約3週間ぶりのバードウオッチングへ。といっても短時間のうちに海岸を2カ所ほど回っただけでした。

海岸はシギやチドリでずいぶんにぎやかになっていました。春の渡りが始まったようです。

久しぶりにハリオシギに出会えました。タシギ6羽、チュウジシギ1羽の群れでした。チュウジシギも久しぶりの出会いでした。

アオアシシギやコアオアシシギ、オジロトウネン、ヒバリシギ、ハマシギ、セイタカシギ、タカブシギ、コチドリ、ダイゼン、ムナグロなども滞在中。

職場と自宅周辺で少しだけ鳥見。

今季初のハシビロガモとオナガガモは前日、初認していましたが写真は撮れずでしたが、この日、ハシビロガモだけは写真の記録が残せました。シマアジは5羽の群れがやってきました。

海岸ではムナグロやダイゼン、キアシシギ、トウネン、メダイチドリなどが滞在中。

サトウキビ畑には警戒心の弱いカタグロトビがいました。石垣島のカタグロトビはずいぶん増えて、田んぼやサトウキビ畑、牧草地に行けばたいてい見られます。

今や田んぼか畑で夕方になればふつうに見られるカタグロトビですが、最近はさらに出会いが多くなっています。この日は、職場から自宅に帰る20分の間に3羽確認しました。わが家のベランダからも夕方や朝方、獲物を探しながら移動するカタグロトビが見られます。

ベニバトは島内複数箇所で10羽が先週から滞在中。成鳥、幼鳥が混じった群れで、イネ科の草の種子についています。

ハリオシギもまだまだ見られます。今年こそ、越冬個体の長期観察を実現したいですね。

今季初のミユビシギとコガモも確認しました。石垣島では生息環境を選ぶミユビシギの飛来は少ないです。

夏羽を少し残したダイゼンも確認。こちらも当地では少なく、夏羽を残した個体はさらに少ないので得した気分です。^^

田んぼや海岸には越冬組のほか通過組が日替わりで入ってにぎやかです。

田んぼと海岸を巡回。キアシシギとキョウジョシギ、セイタカシギ、イソシギで幼鳥を初確認しました。本土からはトウネン、ソリハシシギなどの幼鳥飛来情報ありますが、石垣島ではまだ未確認ですね。

田んぼはシギ、チドリの数、種類とも多くなっていますが、海岸はそれほどでもありません。越冬組が到着すればもう少し賑やかになると思われます。

複数羽いたハリオシギは残すところ1羽のみとなりました。チュウジシギはたくさんいます。タシギはまもなく到着するものと思われます。

今季初のヒバリシギを7月3日に確認してから遅れること1カ月半、やっと幼鳥が到着しました。ヒバリシギは成鳥も含めて個体数を増やしています

タカブシギ、アカアシシギは成鳥、幼鳥含めて日に日に増えています。

石垣島では少ないダイゼンも到着。ムナグロは数日前から見る機会が増えています。

ハリオシギは入れ替わりつつも成鳥、幼鳥とも出会いは多いです。

アマサギやチュウサギ、チュウダイサギ、アオサギも少しずつ数を増やしています。クロツラヘラサギは6月から島内をうろうろしている個体がいます。

今季初となるハリオシギ3羽とチュウジシギ4羽が到着しました。^^ ハリオシギは過去最速となり、例年より少し早い確認となりました。

シギ、チドリの数もどんどん増えてきました。田んぼではハリオシギ、チュウジシギのほかに大量のタカブシギや複数の十数羽の群れでヒバリシギやアオアシシギ、数羽のイソシギが入っています。セイタカシギは数羽だったり、20羽ほどだったりと変動が大きいです。

海岸にはオオメダイチドリやキアシシギ、キョウジョシギ、チュウシャクシギ、ダイゼンなど。海のシギ、チドリはまだまだ少ないです。

石垣島は台風6号の接近で風が強まりつつあり、海岸には暴風雨を避けたオオアジサシやエリグロアジサシ、コアジサシがやってきていました。

渡り途中のオオメダイチドリやダイゼン、トウネンなども悪天候のため滞在しています。

ミサゴは2羽確認。越夏個体と思われます。

海岸にオオメダイチドリの群れが入りました。これまでも少数がパラパラと通過していましたが、まとまった数が入ったのは今季初。オオメダイチドリの群れには3羽のメダイチドリも入っていました。

今季初となるダイゼン1羽も確認したほか、アカアシシギやヒバリシギ、アオアシシギ、キアシシギも順調に増えてきています。

エリグロアジサシのコロニーではヒナの孵化が始まりました。巣立ちまで台風が襲来しないことを祈ります。

春の渡り中のシギやチドリを台風2号が直撃したため、飛翔力が高く天候が良ければ石垣島に降りずにノンストップで行ってしまうような大型のシギが多く降り立ちました。また、波が高いことから沖合の岩礁での休憩ができず、いつもより多くのシギとチドリが海岸に身を寄せていました。

この日、一番の収穫はコオバシギ。スポッターさんに教えてもらって現場に出向いたのですが、散歩の人に飛ばされてロストしたとのこと。近くを探してみると200メートルほど西の海岸に降りていました。

別の海岸にはオオソリハシシギ。こちらはノンストップで1万1000キロを飛べるとあって天候に恵まれた年は会えませんが、今回は台風の影響で4羽が飛来しました。

ホウロクシギも台風の影響が出だしてから立て続けに確認。この日は2羽が砂浜で採餌していました。

沖縄本島や宮古島では多くみられますが、なぜか石垣島では少ないチュウシャクシギも到着。オバシギ3羽とハマシギは数日前から場所を変えつつ滞在している模様。キアシシギは一気に数を増やして30羽ほどをカウント。ダイゼンは越冬組は抜けて渡り組が到着。キョウジョシギ、ムナグロ、アオアシシギ、メダイチドリなども台風で足止めを食らっていますが、これからどんどん北上していきます。

ソリハシセイタカシギがツクシガモに近づくとなにが気に入らなかったのか、いきなりツクシガモがセイタカシギに噛み付きました。その後は、何もなかったかのように多少距離を空けて休んでいました。

ダイゼン、キョウジョシギ、メダイチドリ、シロチドリなども越冬中です。
