A Black-headed Bunting turned up after a long absence. It was very likely the same individual I briefly glimpsed in the same paddy field about a week ago. It was mixed in with a flock of several hundred Eurasian Tree Sparrows.

A Forest Wagtail appeared on the usual forest road — the sixth individual this season. Arriving this late in the year, there is a good chance it will winter here. Last year one wintered at the same spot. Once they settle into wintering mode, though, they tend to stay deep inside the forest and become harder to observe.

Arctic Warblers have been showing up since early October. Birds fresh in from migration are often in small flocks, but now they have spread across the island and each is holding a small territory. Many individuals will stay through to spring. Come April, they form flocks again in preparation for the northward journey, and some begin to sing.

Brambling have also appeared. They joined up with Eurasian Tree Sparrow flocks and were feeding on second-crop rice grain in the paddies.

White-shouldered Starlings — a few birds — were mixed into a flock of several tens of White-cheeked Starlings, along with around 20 Common Starlings. The wintering White-shouldered Starling population on the island is sizeable in its own right, and flocks of several tens are regularly seen in parks and the like.

At this time of year, snipe are mostly Common Snipe, but among a flock of ten-odd I found just two Swinhoe's Snipe. I expect them to disappear once the second-crop rice harvest gets under way. Other waders lingering in the paddies include Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Wood Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, and Long-toed Stint.

Ducks are increasing too — I recorded my first Mallard of the season on Ishigaki. Mallard used to be quite scarce on Ishigaki and Okinawa, but the numbers being seen seem to grow a little more each year.

On a family trip to Okinawa's main island, I took the opportunity to see two overwintering Forest Wagtails and the first-ever Western Gull recorded in Japan.

With help from local friends, I managed to see both target species in a short time. ^^

Grey Wagtails appear on Ishigaki Island every year, but this was a rare chance to see two individuals at the same time, so I made the trip all the way to the north of the island to observe them.

On the way home from work I found a pre-roost gathering of about 50 Grey Wagtails and 20 Eastern Yellow Wagtails, and while checking for anything mixed in I spotted one Forest Wagtail. They normally live along forest tracks, so finding a Forest Wagtail in a sugarcane field was a real surprise.

The following day it was again mixed in with the Grey Wagtail flock at the same spot, so it is presumably spending its days somewhere on a nearby forest track. One White Wagtail was in the same flock. It would be nice if it overwintered together with the Grey Wagtails.

Two Red Collared Doves are staying, but they look unsettled — a Black-winged Kite, Hen Harrier, and Eurasian Sparrowhawk come by every day. For some reason a Brown Shrike was moving around with the Red Collared Doves and Oriental Turtle Doves — perhaps because it too is wary of the raptors.

いつも1日か2日で抜けるイワミセキレイですが、この個体は 9月30日 に見つかり、この日で7日目の滞在となりました。

今季はイワミセキレイの飛来が多く、翌日には7羽目となる個体が確認されました。この個体以外はすべて1日でいなくなりました。

今季3羽目のイワミセキレイ登場。前回見つけた個体と同じ場所でした。前回のは警戒心がとても強かったのですが、今回は全くありません。近くで可愛らしいイワミセキレイを見ることができました。

ツバメは南下個体が大量に滞在中。田んぼや畑で群れとなって餌をとっている光景があちこちで見られます。

イワミセキレイ、ムネアカタヒバリ、(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイの3種を今季初確認しました。

石垣島のイワミセキレイは例年、アカハラダカの渡ってくる9月中旬ごろの飛来が多いのですが、今年は少し遅めの登場です。久しぶりのイワミセキレイですが、ちょっと小ぶりで色合いが渋く、なぜか尾羽を左右にゆっくり振るところなどちょっと変わり者ないい鳥です。^^ キセキレイと行動を共にしていましたが、全長20センチのキセキレイと比べると全長15センチのイワミセキレイはやり小さいです。

ムネアカタヒバリはこれから冬にかけて数をどんどん増やしていき、まもなくタヒバリやマミジロタヒバリなども加わり石垣島の田んぼの小鳥が楽しくなります。

(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイは例年だとマミジロツメナガセキレイとほとんど変わらない時季にやってくるはずなのですが、ことしは待てど暮らせど見当たらず。10月に入ってやっと(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイの群れに出会えました。

キセキレイは林道から芝生、田んぼまでいろいろな環境にいますが、1羽から数羽の群れでいます。

昨年の同じ頃にヤツガシラを見た場所に探しに行きましたが空振り…しましたが、帰り道に於茂登岳登山口の広場や嵩田林道、川平石崎、崎枝半島でそれぞれイワミセキレイを撮影、観察できました。1日で4羽も見たのは初めてです。^^

嵩田林道ではアカショウビンが2羽いました。
