We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
都会の真ん中でサンコウチョウが営巣中。ヒナは2羽は確認できました。通常であれが4羽はいるでしょう。巣立ちまであと数日。野良猫がたくさんいるので、捕食されないか巣立った後が心配です。マングースもたまに見ますが、猫がいるところへはやってこないのでやはり、脅威は野良猫。^^;
時間がなく、親鳥が餌を運ぶところは見られませんでした。明日は、休日なので早い時間から見てこよう。^^
The afternoon sun was hitting the Japanese Paradise Flycatcher nest full on. It was late in the day, so feeding time may have been over. I wasn't there long enough to confirm.
海岸では、コアジサシとシロチドリが抱卵中。
コアジサシの巣の横には、木の枝が突き立ててあった。誰かが踏まないようにと目印をつけたのだろう。
シロチドリの巣は二つ。両方とも抱卵中でした。
海岸近くの防風林では、シロガシラの巣立ち直後と思われるヒナがいた。イソヒヨドリのヒナは巣立ち後、しばらくたっているようでこちらを警戒することも覚え、親鳥について回っていた。
ウグイスは、藪の中を3羽ほどの巣立ちビナが親鳥について回っていた。かなり深い藪で写真は撮れず。 母島で見たハシナガウグイスのヒナ たちは全く警戒心がなかったんだけど、沖縄のウグイスは警戒心が強い。
ヒヨドリの巣立ちビナもあちこちで見られた。
沖縄は、海も山も子育て真っ盛りです。^^

Okinawa seems to be having another dry rainy season this year, with hot, sunny days continuing. The heat is getting to me out in the field too. ^^;
Three Kentish Plover eggs on a piece of coral. People walk along this beach for their daily stroll, so I'm worried the eggs might get stepped on.

The Blue Rock Thrush had three chicks with her. Several days had passed since fledging, and they were flying freely and following the parent around.
沖縄は、スーマンボースー(小満芒種)真っ只中なのですが、雨が降りません。ことしも空梅雨に終わるようです。昨年はも空梅雨でしたが、期間終盤、台風並みの大雨もあり アオバズクの営巣が一つダメに なりました。ことしはそれすらなく暑い日々が続いています…。^^;
数日前に見つけたサンコウチョウの営巣。ヒナが4羽かえっていました。ヒナの成長具合から予想すると巣立ちは6月11日の早朝でしょう。
このペアはオス親が餌を運んでくる頻度がかなり高かった。普通は、メス親の方が子育てに一生懸命なのですが、よくできたオスだ!! オスばかり餌を持ってくるので動画に映るのもオスだけ。^^;
ヒナに持ってくる獲物は、オオジョロウグモばかりでした。生まれて4〜5日たつとこれぐらいの餌も食えるようになります。

After feeding the chicks, the male stares into the nest for a while. He is waiting for a chick to defecate.
After a short while, a chick produced a large dropping. In Japanese Paradise Flycatchers, the parents carry the chicks' droppings away and dispose of them.

The female's tail feathers are not that different from those of other birds.
アオバズクの営巣6カ所のうち近場の2カ所を見て来ましたが、まだ、抱卵中のようでした。きょうの那覇の最高気温は33.2度と真夏の気温でした。樹洞の中は、もっと暑いのでしょうね。
公園のペアは、例年通りだと7月上旬の巣立ちです。もう片方のペアは、 昨年、大雨で卵がダメになってしまった ので、ことしこそは、可愛いヒナを見せてくれることを期待です。^^

When the rain cleared and I went to check on the Brown Hawk-Owls in the park, the bird was soaked to the skin. ^^; This pair has successfully raised chicks three years in a row.
先日の 都会で子育て中のサンコウチョウ に続き、きょうは公園で子育てするサンコウチョウを発見しました。オス親は全く給餌に現れませんでした。その代わり、メスがもう1羽いて、巣の周りをうろついていました。最初は、メスタイプのオスかと思ったのですが、実母と思われる方の個体が、他方を追い回していたのでそうでもなさそう。どういうことなんだろう?
雨上がり、公園内のサンコウチョウが営巣しそうなポイントを探していると暗い藪の中に巣を発見。4羽のヒナが元気に育っていました。日齢も先日のサンコウチョウのヒナたちと同じぐらいでしたので来週半ばの巣立ちでしょう。
目線の高さに巣を構えているので、ヒナたちの様子がよく見えます。暗い環境なのでシャッタースピードが1/30ぐらいです。^^;
A Japanese Paradise Flycatcher nest that is very easy to observe at eye level. Four chicks are opening their mouths eagerly begging for food. The prey is a black Joro Spider.
Most of the prey were Joro Spiders.
Moths were brought occasionally, but I couldn't identify the species.
The conditions are great for watching, so I'd really like to stay until the chicks fledge.
午前と午後に2カ所のサンコウチョウの子育てを観察。
午前中に見てきた方は、 昨日は、オスは一切給餌に来ませんでした が、きょうはメスと同じぐらいの頻度でやって来ました。どういう風の吹き回しなんだろう? しかし、昨日と同じようにやはり、第三者のメスの個体がいるようです。なんでそうなっているのかよく分かりません。
ここのペアは、オスはガ、メスはオオジョロウグモを捕まえていた。巣立ちは11日か12日かな。
午後に見に行った方は、昨日よりヒナの動きが活発になっていた。巣立ちは10日か11日になりそうです。
6月10日追記
2巣とも10日の午前中に無事に巣立ちました。

Fledging here will probably be on the 11th or 12th.
When a parent returns with food, the chicks open their mouths wide and make a huge fuss. Their calls are becoming much more audible now.
The throat feathers on this one are becoming more prominent. Fledging can't be far off.

The chicks were occasionally stretching inside the nest. When they start doing that, fledging is close.
都会の真ん中で営巣中のアオバズク。道行く人を日々、木陰から見つめています。
サンコウチョウは2巣 とも無事に巣立っていました。

ツミの営巣、6巣のうち2巣でヒナが孵っていました。もう一つも孵っていると思うのですが、メス親の襲撃が激しくてまともに観察できませんでしたが、毎年、ヒナが誕生すると鳥が変わったように攻撃するツミなので多分、孵化しているのでしょう。
孵化後、数日って感じでしょうか。巣立ちは来月初旬ぐらいから順次始まると思います。
The female was restless and fidgety, and unlike during incubation she was holding her body up slightly, so I thought the chicks had hatched. As I watched, I caught a brief glimpse of a chick. I waited for the male to come and feed them, but he never appeared, so I gave up.
By that point the female had apparently already been fed by the male — she fell asleep inside the nest. ^^;
The female at a different location would dive at people passing by, but the people being attacked didn't notice. She pulls up at the last moment and never actually makes contact, so I suppose that's why no one catches on.
The attacks made me too nervous to check inside the nest, but from the way she was behaving I believe the chicks have hatched.
This one also appeared to have chicks — she was moving around inside the nest. You can just make out the female through the gaps in the nest material.
昨年は、シーズン序盤に釣り人の侵入で営巣放棄してしまったエリグロアジサシの営巣地に、今年も戻ってきていました。確認できたのは6羽でしたが、営巣が始まればもう少し増えるでしょう。
It would perch on top of the rocky reef, spread its wings, and call.
The weather was not great due to the baiu front, so I couldn't get that shot of a deep-blue sea with Black-naped Terns. ^^;
I will contact the authorities to ask whether they can put up warning signs, but for this year all I can do is hope there are no anglers coming in.
ホントウアカヒゲは、2回目の繁殖に入っているようで、メスは巣材運び、オスは近くでしきりにさえずっていました。
先日見つけたアカショウビンの営巣木 は、残念ながら倒壊してしまいました。卵やヒナが落ちていないか周辺を探しましたが、見つからず。残念です。
Okinawa Robin has entered its second breeding attempt of the season. The female was carrying nest material. The male in the photo moved through the territory, singing at key spots along the way.
The nesting tree of the Ruddy Kingfisher has collapsed. A shame, as it was a very easy spot to observe from.
求愛などをしているシーズン序盤に測量やボーリング調査が入って 環境が大きく変わってしまい、今年の営巣を絶望視していた場所で、シロチドリが1ペア抱卵していました。
来年には建物が建って繁殖はできないと思われ、今年が最後の繁殖となりそうです。無事に巣立つまで何事もないことを願っています。

I expect this will be the last year they nest here. I can only hope that construction doesn't begin before the chicks hatch.
昨年から1巣増えて、今年は7巣観察しているアオバズクの営巣はそれぞれ順調のようで、外から中が見える巣では、ヒナが孵っていました。7月の第1週の巣立ち予定。他のペアも同じぐらいの時期から抱卵に入っていますので、7月に入ると賑やかになりそうです。^^
6月に入ってから増えだしたリュウキュウアブラゼミを空中で捕まえたオスもいました。昼間に狩りをするアオバズクは何度か見たことがあります。
6月17日追記
6月16日の大雨により、巣内が浸水し生後10日ぐらいのヒナ3羽が溺死しました。昨年に続き2年連続で大雨により繁殖失敗。
6月20日追記
那覇市内のもう一つのアオバズクの営巣も失敗。6月16日の大雨によるものと思われる。それ以外のアオバズクの営巣は、順調にいっている模様。

This is the female, paired with the bird in the photo above. Her tail feathers are quite worn from incubating.
There were large numbers of Ryukyu Large Brown Cicadas about, and the owl was catching them effortlessly as they flew right past.

Also a male. People out for a walk were passing just a few metres in front of it.
Male Brown Hawk-Owls look slightly slimmer than females. This is in contrast to the Oriental and Collared Scops-Owls, where there is hardly any size difference between the sexes.
今回は、ヒナは1羽だけのようでした。抱卵状況が悪かったのか、親鳥のどちらか、もしくは両方が高齢で無精卵だったのか理由はよく分かりません。
ヒナが1羽なので餌の量もそれに伴い、いつもの3分の1か4分の1で済むので、オス親がせっかく獲物を持って来てもメスが受け取りに行かず、オス親は困っていた。^^;
ヒナは、生後約2週間ほどです。
A male Japanese Sparrowhawk prepares its prey — apparently a fledgling Blue Rock Thrush.
The female comes close, but shows absolutely no sign of taking the prey. ^^;
Since the female wouldn't come to collect it, the male ended up eating the prey himself.
The Japanese Sparrowhawk chick has grown quite large. Juvenile brown feathers were showing at the shoulders. There are usually 3–4 chicks, but this one is an only child.

越夏中のクロツラヘラサギが3羽、三角池で休んでいた。石垣島で夏にクロツラヘラサギを見ることはなかったのですが、本島にきてからは、これが普通になりつつある。^^; クロツラヘラサギは、九州とかでも夏を越す個体いるのかな?
Both are young individuals. The one in the background is more advanced, as its iris is beginning to turn red.
The black juvenile plumage seems to have faded considerably.
開発にも負けず抱卵していたシロチドリ の卵が孵化しました。卵は三つあったのですが、ヒナは2羽だけ。孵らなかったのか、ネコにやられたのか。この地域は、野良猫が大変多く、わざわざ餌をやりにくる心無い人までおり、捕食されるヒナもいるようなシロチドリたちには厳しい環境。無事に育つことを願っている。

国際通りから数十メートルのところで営巣しるツミを久しぶりに見に行くとヒナが孵っていました。多分、3羽だと思うのですが、巣をかけたコバテイシは、葉が大きくよく茂るので確実ではないです。2羽は確実にいるのですが、3羽目の確証が持てない…。^^;
ここのペアは、オスを誰も見たことがない。一体どこにいるのだろう?

Viewed from the other side, only two chicks are visible at any one time, but there seem to be at least three altogether.
公園のアオバズクが間も無く巣立ちそうです。今日は、メス親も外に出ていましたので、早ければ5日後には巣立つでしょう。
同じ場所でツミも営巣しているので、アオバズクはツミを恐れ、昨年からツミに見つからないような場所で見張りをしています。3年前、初めて見つけたときの場所では、昼間の見張りをしなくなっていました。しかし、今日はいつもツミを恐れているオスの方が、以前と同じ場所に止まっています。
ここのツミは、人間に対してもカラスに対してもかなり攻撃を仕掛けてくる気の荒いペアです。アオバズクがツミにやられないかヒヤヒヤものでしたが、夜も見にいってみると、オス親とメス親が巣の入り口前の枝に止まっていました。巣の中のヒナを気にしているので間も無く巣立ちです。

At first I thought this was the male parent, but it's actually the female. The coverts are quite worn from incubation, and the feathers are ruffled and dishevelled. The tail feathers are surprisingly clean.
I went out to have a look at night as well. This is the male Brown Hawk-Owl.

アオバズクの営巣二つをダメにした記録的な大雨が降ったのが6月16日。そして翌17日は、沖縄の梅雨が開けると言われる旧暦5月4日のユッカヌヒーを迎え、晴れが続く沖縄です。各地でハーリーが盛大に行われました。昨日21日は、北半球の昼の時間が一年のうちで一番長い夏至となり、すでに夏本番で暑い日の連続です。
そんな中、公園の一人っ子のツミのヒナは、順調に育っており、大きさは親とさほど変わらないところまで成長しました。両親とも木陰で脇を開いて暑さをしのいでいました。
アオバズクの方は、先日、メス親も外に出るようになり、ヒナが大きく成長していることをうかがわせたのですが、なぜか再び巣に入っていました。巣のヒナは大きくなっているので無理やり巣の入り口に座っている感じです。空気の入れ替えがなくて中は余計に暑いんではなかろうか?^^;

アオバズクの子育ての様子を2カ所3ペア見てきました。
2ペアが50メートルほど離れて営巣していたアオバズク は、片方は巣立った後のようでした。もう一方は、メスも巣から追い出されていたのでヒナは大きくなっています。営巣木に割れ目があり、双眼鏡で覗くと2羽のヒナがわずかに見えました。巣立ちまであと数日のようです。
別のポイントの巣からはアオバズクのヒナが顔を出していました。まだ、白い綿毛が多く残り、巣立ちにはしばらく時間がかかりそうです。こちらの巣も顔を出しているヒナの様子から複数羽がいると思われます。
7営巣観察しているアオバズクは、現在の時点で2巣が大雨により繁殖失敗、1巣が巣立ち済みで、残りは一生懸命子育て中です。
近所の公園のツミのヒナ は、白い綿毛は抜け落ち、巣のそばの枝に止まっていました。まだ、しばらくは巣の近くをうろうろして親鳥から給餌を受けます。ツミは、6巣を観察していますがここの進捗が一番早いです。

This is the female. In this pair, the male has a wider white patch between the eyes, and the female a narrower one.
近所の公園のツミは枝渡りをするまでに成長しました。
親鳥は、昼ごろ獲物を運んできましたが、一人っ子のせいかおっとりした食べっぷり。複数ヒナがいると猛烈な取り合いになるのですがね。^^;

クロハラアジサシが4羽飛来していました。夏羽の個体と冬羽の個体です。
田んぼには、セイタカシギが3羽休んでいた。
It seemed to be catching grasshoppers and the like, flying back and forth over the field.

アオバズクのヒナは、今夜か明日の夜には巣立ちしそうです。少なくとも2羽は外から見えました。
帰りに標高200メートルぐらいの山に登ってみたら、アカショウビンの鳴き声がよく聞こえ、巣も見つかりましたが、ブラインドとカメラを持って登る気にはなれませんでした…。麓の公園でリュウキュウコゲラを撮っただけ。^^;
Through a crack in the nest I could see two chicks moving about. One seemed to notice me and watched for a while with a curious look, then turned its back and started wriggling again. Can't wait to get out, I wonder?
