アオバズクのヒナ誕生
昨年から1巣増えて、今年は7巣観察しているアオバズクの営巣はそれぞれ順調のようで、外から中が見える巣では、ヒナが孵っていました。7月の第1週の巣立ち予定。他のペアも同じぐらいの時期から抱卵に入っていますので、7月に入ると賑やかになりそうです。^^
6月に入ってから増えだしたリュウキュウアブラゼミを空中で捕まえたオスもいました。昼間に狩りをするアオバズクは何度か見たことがあります。
6月17日追記
6月16日の大雨により、巣内が浸水し生後10日ぐらいのヒナ3羽が溺死しました。昨年に続き2年連続で大雨により繁殖失敗。
6月20日追記
那覇市内のもう一つのアオバズクの営巣も失敗。6月16日の大雨によるものと思われる。それ以外のアオバズクの営巣は、順調にいっている模様。
A male Brown Hawk-Owl that has caught a Ryukyu Large Brown Cicada.
This is the female, paired with the bird in the photo above. Her tail feathers are quite worn from incubating.
There were large numbers of Ryukyu Large Brown Cicadas about, and the owl was catching them effortlessly as they flew right past.
Gripping firmly with sharp talons, eating from the head.
Also a male Brown Hawk-Owl.
The same individual as above, from the back. The tail feathers are in fine condition, as expected.
Also a male. People out for a walk were passing just a few metres in front of it.
Male Brown Hawk-Owls look slightly slimmer than females. This is in contrast to the Oriental and Collared Scops-Owls, where there is hardly any size difference between the sexes.
