We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
ハリオシギから始まったジシギの渡りも終盤になってくるとタシギが大勢を占めるようになりました。それでも越冬モードのハリオシギやチュウジシギもいますので、換羽の推移を見守るのが楽しみですね。

相変わらず、秋の渡りで野鳥たちの入れ替わりが激しい石垣島です。今季3羽目となるソリハシセイタカシギのほか、アカアシシギやセイタカシギ、アオアシシギ、ヒバリシギ、タカブシギなど田んぼに赴けば必ずシギたちが出迎えてくれます。ハマシギは8羽の群れが入っていました。
ムラサキサギは幼鳥、成鳥と出会う機会は増えています。リュウキュウヨシゴイも子育てが終わり、田んぼや水路をのぞけば大抵、見つかります。
アマサギやチュウダイサギは渡りが最盛期を迎えており、数百羽の群れが現れたりします。こちらも入れ替わりが激しいです。
先週まで大量にいたツバメチドリは数を減らしましたが、クロハラアジサシは相変わらず島内のあちこちで逗留しています。

毎年、アカハラダカとともにやってくるハイイロオウチュウが今年も石垣島に現れました。今季は2カ所で合わせて3羽が確認されています。 2017年のハイイロオウチュウは越冬 して近くで観察することができました。ことしも越冬に期待です。

It kept looking around every time an insect flew past, but I never got to see it make a catch.

It seems that this year, as usual, Ashy Drongos, Dollarbirds, and Chinese Sparrowhawks have all arrived together on the outer islands of Okinawa Main Island and on Yonaguni Island.

アメリカウズラシギの田んぼに到着するや土砂降りに見舞われました…。
見える範囲の田んぼにはツバメチドリやアカアシシギ、ヒバリシギといった沖縄らしいシギ、チドリがいるほか、セイタカシギやコアオアシシギ、タカブシギ、ハマシギ、タシギなどが休憩中。
クロハラアジサシは石垣島のあちこちの田んぼや牧草地でヒワヒワと飛んでいる姿を目にします。
アカハラダカの渡りが終わり、サシバの姿が見え出した石垣島は、秋の渡りも終わりに近づき鳥の入れ替わりが激しいです。田んぼで観察しているだけで色々な野鳥がやってきたり飛び去ったりしているのが確認できます。

I thought this was a Long-toed Stint adult in late summer plumage, but it appears to be a worn juvenile. Long-toed Stints in adult winter, adult summer, and juvenile plumages are all present together.

Common Snipe, juvenile. Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe numbers have dropped off, and most birds now are Common Snipe.
Dunlin, juvenile plumage transitioning to first-winter. On Ishigaki Island, it is almost exclusively juveniles that arrive. I haven't seen an adult this season.

Black-bellied Tern, adult. Summer plumage to winter plumage. Oriental Pratincoles move through in concentrated waves, but Black-bellied Terns keep trickling through.
昨年は11月に撮影できたオオヨシキリ 。本土ではアシ原でにぎやかにさえずっている姿を目にしますが、沖縄本島や八重山の越冬や渡りの個体は静かに草むらの中を移動するのでなかなか目にする機会がありません。
きょうはスコールの後、羽を乾かすためなのか、サトウキビ畑の端へ出てきた2羽を撮影することができました。
オオヨシキリは夏季、大陸でも繁殖していますが、石垣島へ渡ってくるのはどこからなのでしょう。

イワミセキレイ、ムネアカタヒバリ、(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイの3種を今季初確認しました。
石垣島のイワミセキレイは例年、アカハラダカの渡ってくる9月中旬ごろの飛来が多いのですが、今年は少し遅めの登場です。久しぶりのイワミセキレイですが、ちょっと小ぶりで色合いが渋く、なぜか尾羽を左右にゆっくり振るところなどちょっと変わり者ないい鳥です。^^ キセキレイと行動を共にしていましたが、全長20センチのキセキレイと比べると全長15センチのイワミセキレイはやり小さいです。
ムネアカタヒバリはこれから冬にかけて数をどんどん増やしていき、まもなくタヒバリやマミジロタヒバリなども加わり石垣島の田んぼの小鳥が楽しくなります。
(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイは例年だとマミジロツメナガセキレイとほとんど変わらない時季にやってくるはずなのですが、ことしは待てど暮らせど見当たらず。10月に入ってやっと(キマユ)ツメナガセキレイの群れに出会えました。
キセキレイは林道から芝生、田んぼまでいろいろな環境にいますが、1羽から数羽の群れでいます。

The (Yellow-browed) Eastern Yellow Wagtail finally showed up. The adult male is still very much in summer plumage.

Having just arrived on migration, it was very wary, and I could only photograph a distant individual.

ハシブトアジサシが飛来していました。 先日の幼鳥 に続き今季2羽目です。
海岸のチドリたちも数を減らしていますが、オオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ムナグロ、シロチドリなどがいます。シギはキョウジョシギとキアシシギ、チュウシャクシギなどが少々。数は少ないながらも楽しめます。

Lesser Sand Plovers were having a battle. Both are in winter plumage, but the individual in the foreground is the type without a white frontal bar, while the one in the background has a frontal bar.

この時季、石垣島にはいろいろなサギがやってきます。同じ田んぼには、ジャワアカガシラサギとアカガシラサギが同居していました。アカガシラサギのほうが強いようでジャワアカガシラサギが近づくと追い払っていました。ジャワアカガシラサギは今季4羽目となります。アカガシラサギは2羽目。アカガシラサギはこれから増えてきます。
ムラサキサギは、幼鳥、成鳥とも秋は見る機会が多いです。
ゴイサギも増えてきました。夜の田んぼに行くと多く出会いますが、この日は牧場の芝を歩いていました。

久しぶりにカタグロトビの餌場に行ってみました。夕方になると餌のネズミを求めてやってきます。何度か狩りをしていましたが、獲物を捕まえる姿は見ることができませんでした。
サシバの渡りは少し前から始まっており、この日は30羽程度が飛びました。ピークはこれからです。天気に恵まれることを期待しています。
サシバの渡りを見ているとチゴハヤブサが現れました。例年、数羽がサシバと共にやってきて南へ渡っていきます。

田んぼに今季初となるマガンがいました。警戒心がない個体でしたが、右目を負傷しているようです。
コガモは水の張られた田んぼに浮いていました。近くにはカイツブリも。カイツブリは石垣島内で繁殖もしているのですが冬場は個体数が増えるのでどこからか渡ってきているのでしょう。
ジシギはほとんどが、タシギになっていました。越冬する個体も出ると思われます。
畔にはツメナガセキレイやムネアカタヒバリが多くなっています。
The first Greater White-fronted Goose of the season was a lone juvenile. It has a slight injury to its right eye. They normally migrate as a family — could the injury be the reason it became separated from the others?
Eurasian Teal, adult male. Almost fully in eclipse, though breeding plumage had begun to come in to some degree.
A Little Grebe in non-breeding plumage was in the same paddy field as the Eurasian Teal.

石垣島のベニバトシーズンが到来です。田んぼに4羽のベニバトを確認しました。今後、どんどん増えてきて稲刈りが始まれば撮影もしやすくなります。
ツメナガホオジロも出たのですが、仕事中、 第一発見者の「石垣島BIRD観察」さん から連絡をもらい、仕事を終えて駆けつけるも姿を一瞬見ただけでした。今夜は天気が悪いので滞在することを期待します。
今年は沖縄本島、粟国島、与那国島、石垣島でツメナガホオジロが確認されており、沖縄はツメナガホオジロの当たり年かもしれません。

昨日のベニバト4羽 は今朝も健在。アカガシラサギも引き続き滞在中です。
ベニバトを見ているとオオヨシキリ1羽が現れました。ある程度、飛来しているようですが、姿を見る機会がなかなかないので嬉しいですね。
Adult male Ruddy-breasted Crake. It is transitioning from breeding to non-breeding plumage. That said, the difference isn't as dramatic as with sandpipers or plovers, so it's hard to tell — but you can see that several winter-plumage feathers have come in.

A juvenile Japanese Sparrowhawk has been hanging around the area lately, so the birds are on alert.
世界渡り鳥の日(World Migratory Bird Day)なので息子を連れてバンナ公園の渡り鳥観察所にサシバの渡りを見に行ってきました。暴れん坊の3歳児が騒ぐのは自明の理なので終わりがけの午後5時ごろ到着。昨日、宮古島でたくさん飛んでいるとあり、多くのギャラリーが詰めかけていました。多いといっても私たちを入れて9人ですが…。
サシバは、すでに700は飛んだとのこと。しばらく空を見上げて待っていると30羽ほどのタカ柱が東側の尾根にできました。
息子はというと案の定、展望台を大騒ぎで走り回っていました…。ここは沖縄は石垣島なのでだれも文句を言う人はいません。^^
日曜日は雨模様なので観察は難しそうですが、今月中はサシバの渡りが楽しめます。いよいよ秋の渡りの集大成となるサシバの渡り。今秋も石垣島の渡りはこれをもって終了です。最後まで気を抜かずにしっかり観察していきたいと思います!!
幼鳥時代から2年連続で石垣島で越冬している 暗色型サシバ はまだ見えません。ことしもやってくるのを期待しています。

No grand, swirling kettles of raptors, but small ones kept forming here and there.
シギ、チドリの秋の渡りもほとんど終わり、にぎやかだった田んぼも少し寂しくなりましたが、タカブシギやキアシシギ、アカアシシギ、セイタカシギ、タシギ、コチドリなどがまばらに滞在中です。
クロハラアジサシも数を減らし、数羽の群れが数カ所にいる程度です。

今季、サシバの秋の渡りはRadio Taiwan Internationalの記事によると台湾南部の墾丁国家公園のカウントで過去最高の数を記録したそうですが、石垣島では年々、数が減っているような気がします。
日本で繁殖するサシバは、繁殖地である里山の開発や耕作放棄地の増加が原因のひとつとなって個体数が減っているなんて話もありますがその影響なのでしょうか。

今季初となるオニアジサシが飛来しました。石垣島ではこの時季、少数が通過していきます。 沖縄本島では毎年、11月の第1週にオニアジサシが具志干潟に飛来 していました。数は石垣島より沖縄本島の方がでますね。
海岸には、オオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、シロチドリ、ムナグロ、キョウジョシギなどが群れていました。
石垣島のカワセミは警戒心が強いのですが、きょう、海岸で出会った個体は比較的近くで見ることができました。
田んぼは越冬組のタシギが多く、ヒバリシギやセイタカシギ、アカアシシギなどが滞在中です。

Grey Herons come in winter. I don't get many chances to photograph them, but I can't skip checking whether any unusual Grey Herons are among them. ^^ I wonder if a Great Blue Heron will show up.

雨の中、河口ではオニアジサシやチュウダイサギ、クロサギ、コサギ、アオサギが小魚をとっていました。その小魚を目当てにやってきた大きなダツをミサゴが目の前でさらっていきました。
天気が悪く、散歩や釣りの人が来ない海岸は鳥たちの楽園になっています。^^

今季初確認のクロツラヘラサギが2羽田んぼで餌探し。散歩の人が通っても気にする様子もありませんでした。
先日から滞在中のアカガシラサギ は翼を負傷したようで飛べません。捕まえようとおもったけど、どんどん草むらに入っていくので諦めました。
中旬ごろからやってきているハシビロガモの写真がやっと撮れました。
田んぼにはムラサキサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイ、タシギ、タマシギ、セイタカシギ、シマアカモズなどが逗留中です。

10月9日に石垣島BIRD観察さんが第一発見者で見つけたツメナガホオジロ 。当日は、仕事の都合ですぐに駆けつけられず、昼過ぎに行った時は姿を一瞬見ただけでした。
それから約2週間たっているのですが、土砂降りの中、なんと同じエリアに1羽のツメナガホオジロを発見!! 雨が弱まるのを待ち、なんとか写真に残すことができました。
ツメナガホオジロというとユキホオジロ同様に北海道など北の鳥というイメージですが、今季は、沖縄本島、粟国島、与那国島、石垣島と多くの島で見つかっています。

A puffed-up Lapland Longspur. It showed little wariness and was busily pecking at grass seeds.

The Lapland Longspur was larger than a Eurasian Tree Sparrow. According to the field guide it measures around 16.5 cm — the same size as a Meadow Bunting — but the Lapland Longspur looks bigger because it is more stockily built.

If it turns out to be the same individual as before, there are hopes it will stay for the winter.
今季初となるシマアジが田んぼに飛来しました。同じ田んぼにはコガモもいました。
シマアジは江戸時代中期から「しまあぢ」と呼ばれており、古い言葉で珍しいという意味の「シマ」とコガモの古名「アジ」が合わさったもだそうです。昔の人は、シマアジとコガモを別種と認識していたということですね。^^
タゲリも今季初確認です。1羽だけの飛来でした。
昨日まで1羽だけだったオニアジサシは3羽に増えていました。きょうはオニアジサシの鳴き声も聞くことができました。
ほかはムナグロやオオメダイチドリ、メダイチドリ、シロチドリなどいつものメンバーでした。
クロツラヘラサギ2羽は昨日同様2羽で仲良く。

田んぼを通りがかるとカタグロトビのカップルが夕方の空を舞っていました。以前は、幼鳥が餌場にしていたので、その個体が成長になったのか? それとも別からやってきたのか?
石垣島のカタグロトビは順調に数を増やしており、夕方になると餌を求めてあちこちの農地に現れます。

マナヅルの記録は、沖縄本島や南大東島であるのですが石垣島ではありませんので初記録です。
今回、石垣島に現れたマナヅルは単独でやってきて田んぼの畔などで餌を拾っていました。近くのチュウサギなどと比べると異様なほどの大きさと存在感。マナヅルは出水や諫早で何度か見ていますが、石垣島で見るとまた違った趣がありますね。

It appeared to have caught a grasshopper or something similar.
There were people doing farm work nearby, and when my son shouted "Hooded Crane!" the bird didn't react at all, so it didn't seem particularly wary.
またまたベニバトが飛来していました。現在、2カ所合わせて5羽です。今季初のハクセキレイもやってきました。チョウゲンボウやサシバ、ハヤブサは越冬組が数を増やしています。

It was foraging in the farmland, but whenever a Common Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, or Black-winged Kite appeared, it would dash into the undergrowth.
This individual showed little reaction to people.

今季初のレンカクが現れました。警戒心の薄い個体です。ヒドリガモも今季初で2羽が田んぼに飛来しました。
アカガシラサギは長いこと滞在している個体で 先日は翼を痛めていた ので心配していましたが、飛べるまでに回復していました。
タゲリは田んぼ2カ所に8羽。すべて幼鳥の群れでした。

近場の海岸と田んぼを巡回。
田んぼでは、ウズラシギの幼鳥が条件よく撮れました。タカブシギは幼鳥と成鳥がまじった十数羽の群れ、アオアシシギも同様に十数羽、 タゲリは幼鳥ばかり8羽の群れ が先日から滞在中、ヒバリシギは数を減らし、タシギとセイタカシギは越冬組です。
海岸ではオオメダイチドリが姿を消し、メダイチドリとキョウジョシギ、トウネンが少し滞在中。ソリハシシギの幼鳥もいましたが、残念ながら撮り逃しました…。

ツメナガセキレイやキセキレイの渡りはとっくに終わり、すでに越冬体制に入っていますが、 ハクセキレイは先日、やっと姿を現し出しました 。亜種ホオジロハクセキレイは今季初確認となりました。
田んぼを走っていると見慣れない鳥を発見。双眼鏡で見てみるとヒバリ属のなにか。写真を撮って拡大してみるとヒバリでした。沖縄ではヒバリの飛来は非常に少なく、数年に1度ぐらいの出会いです。本土のヒバリとは雰囲気が違う大陸の亜種がやってきている可能性もあります。
石垣島では二期米の収穫が始まり、稲刈り中の田んぼにはカンムリワシが集まって観察しやすくなっています。

稲刈りが始まり石垣島のベニバトは観察しやすくなっています。ベニバトは、8月下旬ころから現れますが、稲の背丈が高くて観察はしにくいですが、10月下旬からは二期米の刈り取りが始まり、かなり見やすくなります。八重山の合言葉は、キジバトの群れにベニバトありです。^^
水の張られた田んぼにはリュウキュウヨシゴイ。愛想のいい個体で目の前で獲物を狙っていました。
ハクセキレイの渡りは序盤ですが、ハクセキレイ、ホオジロハクセキレイが確認されています。今後、さらに数を増やしていきます。
ケリは数日前から滞在しているのですが、チュウヒに飛ばされたりとなかなか撮れずにいましたがやっと撮影でしました。
ムネアカタヒバリは入れ替わりが激しく、増えたり減ったりしていますが、この日は田んぼで多くの個体を確認しました。
