I went back to my home prefecture for the children's summer holidays. I took the chance to look for Latham's Snipe but drew a complete blank. Still, I got to see Japanese Wagtail, Eurasian Skylark, Grey-headed Lapwing, and Black Kite — birds not found on Ishigaki — so I can't complain.

Heard that distinctive call and went looking — found two Japanese Wagtails on a distant greenhouse. There are a handful of records for Okinawa Island, but none yet for Ishigaki.

I visited Aichi Prefecture for an away Snipe Camp. Taking the shinkansen from Nagoya Station, I arrived in Toyohashi. On the first day, two powerful local helpers supported me, and I was finally able to observe the long-awaited Latham's Snipe — both adults and juveniles!!

On the second day I headed alone to Aisai City to search for Latham's Snipe. The lotus fields were thick with leaves and looked hard to work, so I covered the nearby paddy areas instead. Of four birds found, one could be observed well. On the third day I returned to the same spot and photographed one bird.

Wood Sandpiper, Greater Painted-snipe, and Little Ringed Plover were also present, though their numbers were overwhelmingly fewer than on Ishigaki Island.

I am now a little better prepared for the one-in-a-million chance of encountering Latham's Snipe on Ishigaki Island. ^^

The Pied Avocet is down to one bird, but it shows no wariness and has been staying for an extended period. Nearby, several Northern Lapwings and two Grey-headed Lapwings are also lingering.

A flock of Common Snipe is present at the same site. There are no Swinhoe's Snipe or Pin-tailed Snipe. Two Tundra Swans are happily wintering together on this southern island.

The Pied Avocets that arrived in a group of eleven in November have dwindled one by one, down to a single bird now.

The Ruddy Kingfishers that were breeding near my home had fledged before I noticed. I confirmed three fledglings that can now fly.

Malayan Night Herons have also fledged. I confirmed two juveniles that have been out of the nest for some time. Three or so Cinnamon Bittern juveniles were in a flooded paddy. The adults' calls were audible too.

Oriental Pratincoles apparently bred at a quarry on private land — there were around 30 birds in total, adults and juveniles together. Two Little Ringed Plover juveniles as well. There is a possibility they bred on Ishigaki Island.

The Ruddy Kingfisher just a stone's throw from home fledged around three chicks again, as it did last year.

The Lesser Whistling Duck, visible every day. On this day it was particularly wary — both in the morning and in the evening, only the top of its head and neck were visible above the vegetation…

Chinese Pond Heron had also arrived, along with Grey-headed Lapwing, a scarce visitor to Okinawa and the Yaeyamas.

The one Crested Serpent Eagle juvenile that's been reliably viewable was at it again today — foraging at its own pace in the rice fields, walking the bunds and catching what looked like small insects.

Malayan Night Heron adults are turning up more often. This day I had three adults and one juvenile.

The Pin-tailed Snipe is still present. The same paddy field held nearly 30 Common Snipe — presumably spring migrants passing through. New arrivals of Common Redshank, Common Greenshank and Wood Sandpiper were also noted. Migration is picking up pace.

The season's first Northern Lapwing and Grey-headed Lapwing have also arrived.

I spent the New Year holidays in Nagoya, so I squeezed in three hours of birdwatching. There were several bunting species in the same area and it was fun listening to their calls. A short outing, but very satisfying — experiences you simply can't have on Ishigaki Island. ^^ I also got to see Eurasian Skylark and Bull-headed Shrike, both rarely encountered on the island.

There was a Common Starling in the same paddy field, which surprised me. Five birds were mixed in with a flock of White-cheeked Starlings. Northern Lapwing and Grey-headed Lapwing were there too. Grey-headed Lapwings are always around in that area, but it was my first time seeing Northern Lapwing there.

I was listening for Emberiza calls when a Reed Bunting appeared right in front of me. You don't get to see these on Ishigaki.

After several consecutive clear days, bird numbers on Ishigaki had been dropping — but today's heavy rain brought in all sorts of things.

In the same area of paddies, Little Curlew, Pectoral Sandpiper, and Pin-tailed Snipe all turned up together. And a miracle: Little Curlew and Pectoral Sandpiper in the same frame!!

Confirmed the first Swinhoe's Snipe of the season — two birds on a paddy bund. Several Common Snipe as well.

Six Pied Avocets arrived, which I believe is a record count for a flock here. The paddies also hold Common Redshank, Black-winged Stilt, Wood Sandpiper, Oriental Pratincole, and Grey-headed Lapwing — a scarce species on Ishigaki.

A small group of four pond herons — Javan Pond Heron and Chinese Pond Heron combined — is also lingering.

In the farmland on the western side of the island, Daurian Redstarts have arrived in large numbers. Apparently the situation is similar on Iriomote.

Visited my family home in Aichi and did some birdwatching on the side. I was targeting Latham's Snipe, but in spring they are far fewer in number and the timing was a little early, so I struck out…

Even so, I managed to see birds that are hard to come by in Okinawa or on Ishigaki, so it was a satisfying trip.

この春は全国各地でかなりの数が出ているコシャクシギですが、愛知県西尾市でも確認できました。最大60羽ほどいて、私が見に行った翌日には20羽ほどが新たに飛来したそうです。信じられない個体数のコシャクシギが日本全国を通過して行ったようです。

同県愛西市ではホウロクシギやオグロシギ、オジロトウネン、ムナグロ、ケリも確認できました。

実家に孫の顔を見せに行ったついでに少しだけ鳥見。

シベリアオオハシシギと夏羽のツルシギとヒメハマシギに行ってきました。ヒメハマシギは2日連続で外しましたが、シベリアオオハシシギと真っ黒の夏羽ツルシギは首尾よく見られました。

When I arrived on site first thing in the morning, there were around 20 cars already there for the Long-billed Dowitcher. They were lined up along a narrow farm track and looked likely to cause problems for the local farmers, so I stayed off the track and took just a few shots from a long distance. As a result, the corrugated-iron wave sheeting along the field bank made a solid appearance in the frame… ^^;

先日、ハリオシギを見つけた田んぼ で新たに2羽のハリオシギを確認。ここにきて一気に増えたようです。

タマシギは複数が繁殖しているようで巣作りしている個体がいると思えば、きょうは孵化後数日たったヒナを2羽連れたオスを見つけました。

田んぼには、アカアシシギやコアオアシシギ、ヒバリシギ、タカブシギなども日々入れ替わりながら個体数を増やしています。

沖縄ではワンシーズンに1羽見るか見ないかの珍鳥ケリも現れました。

ブロンズトキは分散しながらも滞在しています。カップルらしきもできているようで繁殖の可能性がますます濃厚になってきました。

1月5日に見つけたマキバタヒバリ は10日ほど経ちましたが、まだ滞在しています。全国的にも珍しく沖縄や石垣島でもほとんどお目にかかる機会はないのでこのまま春まで越冬してくれるとうれしいですね。

沖縄的珍鳥のヒバリは、昨年の11月上旬からの長逗留。数は多少減りましたがそれでも6羽が元気に過ごしています。さえずりが聴けるころまでいてくれるのを期待しています。

こちらも沖縄的珍鳥のケリも昨年からの越冬モード。タゲリは昨年10月後半ごろからぞくぞくと石垣島を通過していき、今季はすでに100羽ほど見ています。不思議と全て幼鳥です。

ツグミやシロハラ、アカハラは越冬組も安定して同じポイントで見られるようになっています。珍ツグミはまだですが、冷え込みが続けばあれやこれや入るのを期待です。

シマアカモズも渡りの時期からはずっと少ないですが、それでも農地を回れば1日に数羽は確認できます。

昨年、12月に石垣島初記録として確認したハジロカイツブリ が今年も飛来しました。今回で石垣島2例目です。前回は1日で行方不明になりましたが、今回の個体は安定して見られそうです。

ケリも沖縄では珍しく、今季は長いこと滞在しています。 10月に同所で撮影した個体 と同じかもしれません。春までいて夏羽を拝みたいところです。

カンムリワシの幼鳥も縄張りが安定してきて複数個体がほぼ毎日見られます。

池のカモ類はハシビロガモとコガモ、カルガモを筆頭に、ヒドリガモやキンクロハジロなどが見られます。メジロガモも飛来していますが、きょうは見つけられませんでした。

石垣島発記録となるキバラガラが12月24日に確認されました。今季は九州や関東などでも出ています。年々キバラガラの情報は聞くようになりました。分布を広げているのでしょうか?

石垣島の鳥たちがにぎやかになってきました。春の渡り第2波がやってきたようです。

私は見に行っていませんが、現在、石垣島ではヤツガシラ、クロウタドリ、キガシラセキレイ、シマアオジなどいい鳥がたくさん出ていますよ。 シマアジはどさっと14羽 入りました。石垣島ナンバーワン野鳥ガイドの スポッター さんは新型コロナウイルスの影響で今なら予約取りやすいですよ!!

田んぼには、ツルシギ、セイタカシギ、オジロトウネン、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギ、タカブシギ、ケリのほか、越冬しているムネアカタヒバリやアマサギなどが美しい夏羽に変わっています。

年末から名古屋の実家に帰省したついでに噂のミズカキチドリを見てきました。

現場の田んぼに着くとハヤブサがドバトを食っている最中で、目当ての鳥はいないかと焦りましたが、コチドリ数羽とハジロコチドリ数羽が隣の水が張られた田んぼで呑気に群れていました。双眼鏡で一羽ずつ確認していくとミズカキチドリらしき個体を発見。足指の間の蹼が写った写真も得ることができました。

この個体についてはミズカキチドリかハジロコチドリかでさまざまな意見があるようですが、中趾と内趾の間に小さな蹼が認められるのと中趾と外趾の間の蹼がハジロコチドリより明らかに大きいこと、1月の時点でくちばしの付け根に赤みが残っていること、過眼線が口角まで届いていないことなどからミズカキチドリだと思われます。

また、沖縄ではハジロコチドリも希少なので数羽が同じ田んぼに群れていることに感動しました。

水の張られていない田んぼではニュウナイスズメやケリ、カワラヒワなどが群れていました。

帰り道、コミミズクが頭上を飛び去りましたが、すでに県道に出ており、駐車することができず残念ながら撮り逃しました。名古屋市内にもコミミズクがいるなんてびっくり。

沖縄では非常に少ないケリに出会えました。 先日はタゲリ も確認しており、両種揃い踏み。ケリは 昨年 も 一昨年 も幼鳥でしたが、今回は久しぶりの成鳥でした。

セキレイの数は相変わらず多く、大半をハクセキレイが占め、数羽のツメナガセキレイとホオジロハクセキレイが混ざっていた。タヒバリは10羽程度。シギが全くいない中、なぜかヒバリシギが1羽だけいた。

タシギは数羽が草むらで休んだり、田んぼで餌探ししたりしていました。

糸満あたりの畑を回っているとシマアカモズがいました。枝先に止まり、バッタなどを捕まえているようです。

越冬サシバは、2月末ごろから繁殖のため本土に向かう小さな群れを見るようになりましたが、まだまだのんびりと畑で餌などをとっている個体もいます。

北名城の畑には、ケリが1羽いました。沖縄ではケリを見る機会は少ないです。今冬は、これ以外に金武で1羽見ただけです。

セッカは、畑の上を飛び回りながら縄張りを主張しているようです。こちらも間も無く巣作りに入ります。

沖縄本島でのヤツガシラ探しは諦めて、石垣島で見つけてきました。事前の情報では、数日前にほとんど抜けてしまっていると言うことでしたが、なんとか3羽のヤツガシラを探し出しました。^^

石垣島には、毎年ヤツガシラが渡ってくる場所がいくつかあるのですが、今回の3羽はそのメインのポイントから微妙に離れた所にいました。

今年のヤツガシラは当たり年だったらしく、宮古島では一箇所に13羽いたり石垣島でも一日に10羽以上見つけられたり、西表島や与那国島でもいそうな場所には必ずいるという状況だったようです。
