This is the extras edition of the 7th Ishigaki Island Snipe Camp. Since we had already observed both adult and juvenile Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe to a reasonable degree on the first day, the second day was spent observing a wider variety of species beyond snipe. This post covers those sightings, including observations from day one.

A few Chinese Pond Herons are staying. Plumage varies widely, from individuals still mostly in winter dress to those that have almost fully switched to breeding plumage. A Cinnamon Bittern was nearby as well — it is probably breeding in the vicinity.

White-winged Terns were still present but numbers seemed to have dropped. Black-tailed Godwit, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Common Redshank, and Common Greenshank are also staying.

A Chinese Pond Heron almost fully into breeding plumage. This individual was a bit wary.

The Pheasant-tailed Jacana usually turns up in June, but this season it was confirmed a little earlier than usual. The individual was very wary of crows and flew off every time one passed nearby.

At the baseball field, every time the Malayan Night Heron caught prey, a young Crested Serpent Eagle would steal it. Moving to a different spot would seem the obvious solution, but the pair of Malayan Night Herons appeared determined to stay at that feeding spot — they kept returning to feed despite being robbed repeatedly.

A Pheasant-tailed Jacana startled into the air by a crow. It appeared to be a young bird in first-summer plumage.

With shorebirds on the increase, I spent the entire day searching for waders. The result: starting with Asian Dowitcher, I recorded Pectoral Sandpiper, Little Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Pin-tailed Snipe, Greater Sand Plover, and more — 21 species of waders in total. Seeing this many species in a single day is one of the great pleasures of this time of year. ^^

Two consecutive days of bad weather brought large numbers of shorebirds and plovers — apparently mid-migration — dropping in to localized spots. The biggest group was Black-winged Stilts, over 400 birds, followed by Wood Sandpipers at 200+. There were too many to keep counting, so I stopped midway. ^^;

Pied Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, and Garganey also arrived, making the paddies extremely lively — though two days later everything was back to normal. ^^;

Along the coast, Greater Sand Plover numbers increased, and a small number of Grey Plovers also came through.

Two Citrine Wagtails were mixed in with a large flock of Eastern Yellow Wagtails feeding in a harvested rice paddy. The difference in character makes them stand out clearly even to the naked eye.

In flooded paddies, Black-tailed Godwits, Eurasian Whimbrels, Common Redshanks, Green Sandpipers, Common Shelducks and Eurasian Coots are wintering. Eurasian Coot numbers have been increasing. They have become a main prey item for the Upland Buzzard and Peregrine Falcon.

Three Pied Avocets have been staying for several days. Single birds have also been found elsewhere, so they may have dispersed from the flock of eleven that arrived in November.

The first Black-tailed Godwit of the season has turned up. Also wintering in the paddies: Common Greenshanks, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers, Dunlins, Common Snipes, Black-winged Stilts, Common Redshanks and Wood Sandpipers.

First records this season of Black-tailed Godwit, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Striated Heron. Unless the weather turns rough, large waders like the Black-tailed Godwit don't come down to Ishigaki. Striated Heron is scarce on the island, so finding one felt like a bonus.

The Black-tailed Godwit is still very much in winter plumage.

Turnover among shorebirds in the fields and along the coast has intensified.

In the rice fields, Curlew Sandpipers in beautiful summer plumage were mixed in with a flock of Sharp-tailed Sandpipers. A Little Stint also in summer plumage has arrived, and nine Black-tailed Godwits have come in, adding to the activity.

Pin-tailed Snipe, Swinhoe's Snipe, and Common Snipe are staying on, including some long-term individuals.

Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, and Marsh Sandpiper are beginning to show noticeably contrasting summer plumage.

Along the coast, large numbers of Siberian Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Grey-tailed Tattler, Ruddy Turnstone, Red-necked Stint, and Eurasian Whimbrel have been arriving.

久しぶりに石垣島にオオハシシギがやってきました。台風のおかげでしょうか。

先日の3羽のオウチュウ は5羽に数を増やしていました。4カ所で7羽いたうちのどれかが、合流して5羽になったのか新たに渡ってきたのか分かりませんが、一度に5羽のオウチュウが集まるなんて初めてのことです。

クロハラアジサシが複数入り、その中にハジロクロハラアジサシの夏羽が1羽いました。田んぼの上をひらひらと飛びながら虫をとっていました。

沖縄では珍しい、黒々とした夏羽に衣替えしたツルクイナがいました。石垣島には冬羽や幼鳥は定期的に現れますが、夏羽は珍しいです。

田んぼではウズラシギやタシギ、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギなど渡り途中の個体が入れ替わりで立ち寄っています。

コシアカツバメ、ヒメアマツバメ、ショウドウツバメ、ツバメの4種がまざった群れも飛来。天気が悪い中、田んぼを飛び回りながら餌をとっていました。

Drongos are turning up in large numbers on Ishigakijima this season.

この春は全国各地でかなりの数が出ているコシャクシギですが、愛知県西尾市でも確認できました。最大60羽ほどいて、私が見に行った翌日には20羽ほどが新たに飛来したそうです。信じられない個体数のコシャクシギが日本全国を通過して行ったようです。

同県愛西市ではホウロクシギやオグロシギ、オジロトウネン、ムナグロ、ケリも確認できました。

ソリハシセイタカシギはたまにいなくなりますが、1日もすれば元の田んぼに戻ってきます。この場所がよほど気に入ったようです。

メジロがもはメス幼鳥に加えてオスもやってきました。

ベニバトは複数個所に5羽を確認。今季の2期米は飼料用なので刈り取りが遅く、ベニバトが稲の中に入ってしまうと確認が難しいです。

クロツラヘラサギ、オオハシシギ、オグロシギは同じ田んぼで滞在中。どれも長期滞在ですが、オオハシシギの換羽の推移が特に気になりますね。

昨日の幼鳥 に続き、この日はバライロムクドリの成鳥が現れました。鳴き声が聞けたのと冠羽が見えたのが最高でした。^^

オオムシクイ、コムシクイが多い中、キマユムシクイも確認できました。

最近は珍しい鳥でもなくなった石垣島のカタグロトビ。なれた個体も増えてきました。

ムクドリも一気に数を増やし、町中でも見るようになりました。

石垣島には冬鳥としてやってくるヨシゴイが今季は個体数が多く。河川や沈砂池で多くの個体が越冬しています。

今季初確認となったツグミは昨日までいなかったのに一気に増えていました。

立冬のこの日、マガンが25羽飛来しました。石垣島はもちろん沖縄でも最大の飛来数だと思われます。これまで県内でもっとも多い飛来数は 2018年の11羽 なので倍以上の数に記録更新です。ついでにオナガガモ3羽もついてきました。

今季初となるキンクロハジロを確認。単独で水路を泳いでいました。

先月、50羽ほどの群れで入ったタゲリは島内で分散してあちこちの田んぼにいます。

ツメナガセキレイとムネアカタヒバリは群れで島内を移動していて、昨日は100羽以上の群れがいたのに今日はいないなんてことがよくあります。

ほかにはオグロシギやムナグロ、リュウキュウヨシゴイ、カンムリワシ、ムラサキサギ、シマアカモズ、サシバなどレギュラーメンバーに会えました。

沖縄では数少なく、石垣島では稀なヨシガモが飛来していました。ホオジロハクセキレイ、マガンも今季初確認しました。

オオハシシギは 10月20日に飛来した個体 がまだ滞在中で同じく 20日に別の場所で確認していたオグロシギ と一緒になっていました。

ヨシゴイは複数箇所で複数羽が逗留中。今季は観察する機会が多いです。

先日の個体 に続き、今季2羽目となるソリハシセイタカシギが飛来しました。オオハシシギとヒドリガモは今季初確認となりました。

今季2個体目のオグロシギも確認。田んぼにはアオアシシギやセイタカシギ、タカブシギ、タシギ、ハマシギ、クロハラアジサシなどが滞在中です。

今季初のヨシゴイ確認。畔の枯れたススキの中にいました。エリマキシギはアメリカウズラシギを探していたら発見。クロハラアジサシ、ハジロクロハラアジサシは島内に滞在中。

今季初のオグロシギも確認。こちらは数日前から滞在していましたが、やっと見に行きました。^^;

チュウシャクシギは今季初の幼鳥が到着。浜で成鳥と餌場を巡り戦っていました。

家族4人で1時間に満たない時間ですが、久しぶりに田んぼでのバードウオッチングをしてきました。息子は現れる鳥すべてを「鷲!!」と大喜びでした。

残念ながら石垣島唯一の鷲のカンムリワシには出会えませんでしたが、繁殖期を迎えているリュウキュウヨシゴイのオス2羽とメス1羽が入り乱れて繰り広げるバトルを観察できました。

きれいな婚姻色に染まったオレンジ色のリュウキュウヨシゴイたちがまもなく刈り取りが始まる黄金色の稲穂の上を飛び回っていました。

台風3号が通過して天候が荒れたのでオグロシギ2羽が入りました。飛翔能力の高い大型シギは、海上が荒れでもしないとなかなか石垣島には降りてくれません。セイタカシギも10羽程度いました。

この田んぼで繁殖しているタマシギのオスが一羽でいました。子育ては終わったのでしょうか。

ほかにも色彩変異で赤褐色になったスズメやベニバトのオスとメスに会えました。

4月1日に石垣島に飛来したブロンズトキは、1カ月の滞在となりました。以前は、常に19羽の群れで行動していましたが、ここ数日は分散して過ごしています。2羽仲良く連れ立って餌探しする個体もいて繁殖の予感がしています。^^

リュウキュウアカショウビンもまだ移動個体もいるようで日に日に数を増やしています。昨日はわが家の隣家の庭で2羽のアカショウビンが盛んにさえずっていました。移動個体と思われます。ほかにも中央運動公園や港の小さな公園でもアカショウビンが確認されています。

芝生には人馴れしたズグロミゾゴイが現れてミミズなどを捕まえていました。

休耕田にはシマアカモズのオス。まだこの時季になっても複数個体が農地で観察できます。

オグロシギは先日から滞在中。なぜかコアオアシシギと常に一緒にいます。バンはあちこちで巣を作っているようで、近くをほかの個体が通ると大喧嘩が始まっていました。

セイタカシギは群れがいなくなったと思ったら、数日して再び現れるなど入れ替わりが激しいようです。

造成地ではシロチドリがなんつがいか繁殖しているようで、この日はヒナ5羽と抱卵中を1ペア確認しました。ヒナは見つけ切れないだけでほかにも多くいると思われます。
