Breeding is progressing steadily for Ruddy Kingfisher, Ryukyu Scops Owl, Northern Boobook, and Japanese Sparrowhawk alike.
Two pairs of Ruddy Kingfishers breeding near home. This season's nests are out of sight from the house, so I can't tell exactly how things are going, but since they're carrying food I assume all is well.
The Oriental Pratincole colony was ploughed up, but birds that were already flying apparently managed to escape. A few pairs were still carrying food to chicks.
The Japanese Sparrowhawk breeding is also going well, and chicks were confirmed at one nest. The Common Emerald Doves are probably getting along fine too. The local Ruddy Kingfisher was seen carrying a large cicada, and I assumed it was for large chicks — but it ate the cicada itself. Some nests have already hatched, and on hot days the chicks poke their heads out.

The island's resident birds have entered breeding season. The Ryukyu Scops Owl has already laid eggs and the female appears to be incubating. The male was standing guard nearby.
The Northern Boobook has not yet laid eggs, but the pair appears to have bonded.
The Japanese Sparrowhawk is breeding in the same location as previous years, though the female has been replaced.
The Black-winged Kite, which has been breeding near my home for several years now, looks set to begin incubating again this year.
A Ryukyu Scops Owl I've known for a long time. It seems incubation has begun again this season, with the male standing guard.
Working my way around the rice fields, I heard a Ryukyu Flycatcher calling from the forest edge. Searching for it, I found a male in song. For some reason it also moved into the shrubs at the edge of the paddies.
Visiting Banna Park for the first time in a while, I had good encounters with several Ruddy Kingfishers. Males were conspicuous, which may mean many pairs have already moved into incubation.
I also spotted one Red Collared Dove. Perhaps tired from the crossing, it perched on a wire and occasionally closed its eyes.
In the paddies towards evening, a Ryukyu Sparrowhawk came down onto a farm track and looked around. Watching it, I could see it was targeting a Eurasian Tree Sparrow that had ducked into a thicket.

A bonus from the 2nd Ishigaki Snipe Camp: a Citrine Wagtail turned up — and a strikingly beautiful adult male in summer plumage at that. Juveniles appear every year, but adults are uncommon, so this was a real treat.
It was associating with a flock of Taiwan White Wagtails and Grey Wagtails, though it seemed the Grey Wagtails and the Citrine Wagtail didn't get on — I watched the Citrine Wagtail get chased off several times.
The main post from this snipe camp features large numbers of Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe, so please have a look at that too. The 3rd session is planned for late August. In autumn both Pin-tailed Snipe and Swinhoe's Snipe are present in good numbers, and it's great fun watching juveniles alongside adults and comparing moult stages between the two species.

The Ryukyu Japanese Sparrowhawk chicks have started moving between branches. The eldest is already flying about.
Ryukyu Scops Owls fledged at two locations — I got to meet five adorable chicks in all.

The Ryukyu Black Paradise Flycatcher chicks have just hatched; fledging looks likely around Tanabata.
The Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher has had a late breeding season — there was still a pair digging out a nest hole.
The eldest of three siblings. It seems able to fly short distances.
With migration winding down on Ishigaki, the island's breeding species — Ruddy Kingfisher, Ryukyu Scops Owl, Northern Boobook, Ryukyu Sparrowhawk, Malayan Night Heron and others — are busy building nests and incubating.
Ruddy Kingfishers in particular are very active. On this day, while working my regular job, I counted 13 individuals in the morning and 7 in the afternoon — 20 in total with no duplicates. I get the feeling Ruddy Kingfisher numbers are higher than usual this year.
Crested Serpent Eagles are incubating at this time of year, so encounters are fewer. Black-winged Kites breed year-round, so a few sites are also in the incubation stage right now.
Black Paradise Flycatchers have been increasing too, and their songs can be heard from all directions.
A male Ruddy Kingfisher sang at close range on a forest track. I was able to record fine detail in the recording.
Some of the earlier Ruddy Kingfisher pairs appear to have already started laying, but the local pair near me was still nest-building. Another pair is always moving around together and hasn't started excavating a nest hole yet. No courtship feeding observed either.
The Japanese Sparrowhawk is also approaching breeding season. I often see birds circling over their territories, and their calls are heard frequently.
The Crested Serpent Eagle seems to be incubating, so encounters are less common, but I came across two individuals this day.

Following last year, Ruddy Shelduck has arrived again this year. This season there are two birds and they are extremely wary.
The Red Collared Dove from the other day has now been here for 10 days. It's probably unable to move on due to bad weather.
The Pied Avocet present since 26 October is also still lingering — 10 days for that bird as well.

先日巣立った近所のリュウキュウアカショウビンのヒナがあっという間に成長しています。すでに自由自在に飛び回る術を身に付けたようです。狩りはまだできないようで、親鳥からムカデやクマゼミ などの給餌を受けていました。
ズグロミゾゴイのヒナは大きく成長して、綿毛も少なくなってきています。孵化後18日程度でしょうか。綿毛がほとんどなくなったころに巣立ちます。
リュウキュウツミもヒナが大きく成長し、メス親は巣には全く入らなくなりました。ヒナが枝渡りしだすには、あと10日程度でしょう。

カタグロトビ、リュウキュウアカショウビン、リュウキュウアオバズク、リュウキュウツミの子育ての様子を確認してきました。
近所のカタグロトビは先日、3羽が巣立ち。営巣木付近をうろうろしながら親鳥からエサをもらったりして狩りの練習中。すぐそばではツミが営巣中。きょうはオスもメスも巣の外にいたのでヒナが大きくなっているのかもしれません。カタグロトビとツミはすぐ近くでの繁殖ですが、お互いに全く干渉しないのが不思議です。ほかのエリアのツミはすでに親元を離れているのもいます。
アカショウビンの子育ても順調のようで親鳥が巣のヒナへ持ってくる獲物が日に日に大型になっています。
アオバズクも観察している数カ所で順調のようで昼間、オスもメスも巣外に出ているペアも出てきました。巣の中のヒナが大きくなっている証拠です。また、きょう自宅近くで新たに見つけたアオバズクの巣は外から丸見えで高さもそれほどないので観察が楽しそうです。今季は巣内が見えるアオバズクは2ペア。以前、オオタニワタリの上や公衆トイレの床、アパートの階段下の地面などの営巣も見たことがあります。アオバズクはいろいろな所で繁殖しますね。^^;
今季、自宅から徒歩圏内で繁殖が確認された主な鳥類はカタグロトビ、ツミ、アカショウビン、アオバズク、コノハズク。鳴き声や行動からキンバト、ズアカアオバト、オオクイナ、シロハラクイナも繁殖していると思われますが、巣は見つけられず…。

短時間バードウオッチングでしたが、石垣島の留鳥が勢揃いしました。^^
公園や林道などでリュウキュウアカショウビン数羽。巣穴堀りをしている個体やすでに抱卵に入っているペアなど出会えました。
キンバトの出会いは5月中旬ごろから非常に多くなり、ご多分に漏れず落下して裂開したオオバギの種子をついばんでいます。
リュウキュウキビタキは今年生まれの個体がすでにさえずりながら縄張りを主張。警戒心は弱めで縄張りの見回りなどしっかり観察できました。
リュウキュウコノハズクも数ペアが抱卵中です。
自宅近くのカタグロトビ の子育てを観察していたら、リュウキュウツミの巣を見つけました。カタグロトビの巣からほんの20〜30メートルしか離れておらず驚きました。ツミはほかのツミが近くを通ると追いかけて縄張りから排除していましたが、カタグロトビに対しては知らんぷり。カタグロトビもカラスにはアタックするのですが、ツミのことは気にかけていないようでした。不思議です。

石垣島の留鳥たちの繁殖は早いです。 オリイヤマガラはすでに巣立ち 、私の勤める会社の社屋に巣を作ったリュウキュウツバメは3月後半に巣立ちしました。
シロハラクイナは親鳥2羽で6羽のヒナを連れて歩いていました。前の日にも見ているのでお気に入りの場所のようです。
昨日、自宅のベランダからアサクラサンショウクイを発見したので、付近を探しているとカタグロトビのペアを発見。何度か自宅前のサトウキビ畑で見ている個体だと思われます。農地にぽつんとある小さな雑木林で繁殖しそうです。
リュウキュウツミも繁殖期に入っており、メスが鳴いて威嚇しながらカラスを追い払っていました。オスは見当たりませんでしたが、昨年、一昨年も同所で子育てしているので今年も期待がかかります。
リュウキュウキビタキもあちこちで盛んにさえずっています。農地を車で走っているとリュウキュウキビタキのさえずりが聞こえてきました。小さな雑木林なので、よく探してみるとさえずっている若い個体を発見。まさかこんな場所にまでいるとは思いませんでした。
リュウキュウコノハズクもすでにペアができており、オスがメスを営巣木に誘っています。 先日は、昨年も繁殖に成功しているペアと思われる オスが樹洞からメスを呼ぶ姿 が観察できました。今夜は、新規の場所でオスがメスを巣穴に呼ぶ姿が確認できました。最近、自宅に引き込まれる電線にリュウキュウコノハズクのオスがやってきてしきりにメスを呼んでいます。通風口を狙っているのかもしれません…。^^; 近々、巣箱をかけたいと思います。
キンバトは姿は見えませんが「ウー、ウー」というさえずりと呼ぶにはあまりにも低音の鳴き声がよく聞こえるようになりました。

春の渡り序盤の石垣島です。ヤツガシラやブラックサシバ、シラガホオジロなどいいのが出ています。クロウタドリもいましたが撮り逃しました。私有地だったので深追いできず…。
ヤツガシラは2カ所、暗色型サシバは 3年連続で越冬している個体 とは別の個体で、警戒心ゆるゆるで観察しやすいです。 3月5日に確認されたシラガホオジロ は滞在6日目を迎えて、若干撮影しやすくなりました。
石垣島など八重山で繁殖するリュウキュウツミも春になり、活動が活発になってきました。
昨年生まれのズグロミゾゴイたちはだんだんと成鳥の羽に変わりつつあります。
シマアカモズも越冬組と北上組で増えたり減ったり、北帰行がはじまっているツグミは渡に備えて小さな群れになりつつあります。
カンムリワシやムラサキサギ、カタグロトビも繁殖に向けて活動が盛んになっています。

今季初確認のクロツラヘラサギが2羽田んぼで餌探し。散歩の人が通っても気にする様子もありませんでした。
先日から滞在中のアカガシラサギ は翼を負傷したようで飛べません。捕まえようとおもったけど、どんどん草むらに入っていくので諦めました。
中旬ごろからやってきているハシビロガモの写真がやっと撮れました。
田んぼにはムラサキサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイ、タシギ、タマシギ、セイタカシギ、シマアカモズなどが逗留中です。

リュウキュウツミも繁殖準備に入っているようで、石垣島内の3カ所で、求愛給餌のけたたましい鳴き声が聞こえます。
午後から息子を連れて広場で遊んでいると近くの雑木林からツミのメスの「キッ、キッ、キッ、キッ」という鋭い鳴き声が聞こえてきます。求愛給餌の時に聞く鳴き声なので探してみるとオオバギの枝にメスのツミが止まって、足には小鳥をつかんでいました。
近くにはオスもおり、カラスなどが近づくと激しく追い払っていたので、営巣エリアと見て間違いなさそうです。
田んぼでは、 先日のクロツラヘラサギ成鳥 と同じ田んぼで若いクロツラヘラサギが合流していました。春にしては長めの滞在です。

今日は、沖縄本島からやってきた友人とバードウオッチングで今季初のジョウビタキを確認。オス2羽とメス1羽が同じエリアにいましたが、メスは警戒心が強く写真に収められず。
マヒワは1羽だけ田んぼの畔にはえたススキの根元で採餌していました。かなり距離があり、双眼鏡で見つけた時は黄色が目立ちドキッとしましたが、ふつーのマヒワでした。^^;
同じ田んぼには、リュウキュウツミの幼鳥が1羽。沖縄本島赴任中、ツミの幼鳥を見慣れていたので下面の太い横斑に違和感を覚え、ミナミツミだったらどうしようとか思っていたのは内緒です…。
友人が撮りたがっていたカンムリワシの飛翔も撮れ、沖縄本島では通年見られるクロツラヘラサギ2羽も昨日に引き続き滞在中でした。沖縄本島のクロツラヘラサギは汚い池にいるので石垣島の美しい田んぼで見るクロツラヘラサギに友人は感動していました。^^ また、本島では生息していないムラサキサギも複数出会えました。チョウゲンボウ、サシバなども無事にゲット。
島内各地の田んぼでは、ウズラシギやクサシギ、アオアシシギ、アカアシシギ、コアオアシシギなど。ハマシギは2カ所で合わせて11羽を確認しました。
コガモ数十羽とヒドリガモ数羽の群れも入っていました。
レンカクが入ったと友人から連絡があったのですが、家族サービスの時間が迫っていたので見にいけず…。明日の朝、見に行ってきます。

石垣島で一番カタグロトビを観察している人に同行して巣から見え出したヒナを拝んできました。幼鳥のカタグロトビを見るのはこれが初めて。なんとも可愛らいいヒナでした。^^
先日、巣立ちビナを発見したリュウキュウツミ の親から子への餌渡しでも見てやろうと行ってきましたが、ヒナは鳴き声はすれど見えず。親鳥も捕まえたセミを自分で食っていました。ヒナたちは十分餌を食ったあとだったのか?

今日は久しぶりの一日フリー。午前中は洗濯とか不動産屋へ書類の提出とかあって午後からですが、まともに鳥見に行けました。半日にしては得るものが多い一日でした。^^
昨日の夜探 でアオバズクが営巣していると思われる場所をまたまた近所で見つけたので、今日の午後、回ってみると2羽のヒナがすでに巣立っていました。営巣木も確認できました。
さらに数十メートル離れた雑木林ではリュウキュウツミも営巣していたようでこちらも2羽のヒナが巣立っていました。
前から営巣を観察しているアオバズクは昨夜午前2時ごろは3羽とも全て巣内にいたのですが、そのあと巣立ったようで夕方、1羽が親鳥と近くの木に止まっていました。
ここは夕方になるとカラスが数十羽でやってくるので、カラスの被害を心配していましたが、大丈夫そうでした。
近くの雑木林では4月ごろから目をつけていたのですが、巣は探せずにいたリュウキュウツミもヒナが2羽巣立っていました。不思議なことにここのツミはオスもメスも鳴き声をあげません。なので余計に探すのに苦労しました。^^;
近くでズグロミゾゴイの巣らしきを発見したのですが確定できず。今後の観察課題。
