We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
クロハラアジサシが4羽飛来していました。夏羽の個体と冬羽の個体です。
田んぼには、セイタカシギが3羽休んでいた。
It seemed to be catching grasshoppers and the like, flying back and forth over the field.

近所の公園のツミは枝渡りをするまでに成長しました。
親鳥は、昼ごろ獲物を運んできましたが、一人っ子のせいかおっとりした食べっぷり。複数ヒナがいると猛烈な取り合いになるのですがね。^^;

アオバズクの子育ての様子を2カ所3ペア見てきました。
2ペアが50メートルほど離れて営巣していたアオバズク は、片方は巣立った後のようでした。もう一方は、メスも巣から追い出されていたのでヒナは大きくなっています。営巣木に割れ目があり、双眼鏡で覗くと2羽のヒナがわずかに見えました。巣立ちまであと数日のようです。
別のポイントの巣からはアオバズクのヒナが顔を出していました。まだ、白い綿毛が多く残り、巣立ちにはしばらく時間がかかりそうです。こちらの巣も顔を出しているヒナの様子から複数羽がいると思われます。
7営巣観察しているアオバズクは、現在の時点で2巣が大雨により繁殖失敗、1巣が巣立ち済みで、残りは一生懸命子育て中です。
近所の公園のツミのヒナ は、白い綿毛は抜け落ち、巣のそばの枝に止まっていました。まだ、しばらくは巣の近くをうろうろして親鳥から給餌を受けます。ツミは、6巣を観察していますがここの進捗が一番早いです。

This is the female. In this pair, the male has a wider white patch between the eyes, and the female a narrower one.
アオバズクの営巣二つをダメにした記録的な大雨が降ったのが6月16日。そして翌17日は、沖縄の梅雨が開けると言われる旧暦5月4日のユッカヌヒーを迎え、晴れが続く沖縄です。各地でハーリーが盛大に行われました。昨日21日は、北半球の昼の時間が一年のうちで一番長い夏至となり、すでに夏本番で暑い日の連続です。
そんな中、公園の一人っ子のツミのヒナは、順調に育っており、大きさは親とさほど変わらないところまで成長しました。両親とも木陰で脇を開いて暑さをしのいでいました。
アオバズクの方は、先日、メス親も外に出るようになり、ヒナが大きく成長していることをうかがわせたのですが、なぜか再び巣に入っていました。巣のヒナは大きくなっているので無理やり巣の入り口に座っている感じです。空気の入れ替えがなくて中は余計に暑いんではなかろうか?^^;

公園のアオバズクが間も無く巣立ちそうです。今日は、メス親も外に出ていましたので、早ければ5日後には巣立つでしょう。
同じ場所でツミも営巣しているので、アオバズクはツミを恐れ、昨年からツミに見つからないような場所で見張りをしています。3年前、初めて見つけたときの場所では、昼間の見張りをしなくなっていました。しかし、今日はいつもツミを恐れているオスの方が、以前と同じ場所に止まっています。
ここのツミは、人間に対してもカラスに対してもかなり攻撃を仕掛けてくる気の荒いペアです。アオバズクがツミにやられないかヒヤヒヤものでしたが、夜も見にいってみると、オス親とメス親が巣の入り口前の枝に止まっていました。巣の中のヒナを気にしているので間も無く巣立ちです。

At first I thought this was the male parent, but it's actually the female. The coverts are quite worn from incubation, and the feathers are ruffled and dishevelled. The tail feathers are surprisingly clean.
I went out to have a look at night as well. This is the male Brown Hawk-Owl.
