We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
昨日のオオチドリを見られなかった友人と現場で待ち合わせ。残念ながら不在で付近を探すも見つからず…。近くでカタグロトビやホシムクドリ、ギンムクドリ、リュウキュウツミなどを観察後、元の場所に戻ってみるとオオチドリ2羽も戻っていました。^^
もう一つのポイントでは単独のオオチドリが確認され、本日は、2カ所3羽のオオチドリ。

オオチドリ2羽が石垣島に到着です。
日曜日なので家族で公園に行った帰り、島の鳥情報LINEグループにスポッターさんから「オオチドリがいるぞ」と着信。車をUターンして早速、現場の畑に駆けつけると2羽の美しいオオチドリがたたずんでいました。
与那国島でもオオチドリが確認され始めており、石垣島でももうそろそろかなと思った矢先でした。
スポッターさんによると石垣島内ではヤツガシラ、クロウタドリなど春の渡鳥たちが継続的に観察されているようです。 ^^
A Greater Sand Plover was resting at the edge of a wide field.
This is what you get at 600mm. At that distance it would be near-impossible to spot with the naked eye. ^^; Finding one by methodically working through field after identical field — that's a proper birder for you.
二十四節気の春分のこの日、どーしてもヤツガシラが見たいという大学生がやってきたので、野鳥ガイドの真似事をして久しぶりに本気の鳥探し。学生は先週も石垣島に来ていましたが、ヤツガシラを見られずだったので気合十分で再来島。結果、ヤツガシラ2個体とクロウタドリの美しい成鳥を首尾よく観察、撮影することができました。この日、ヤツガシラが見られたのは、石垣島ではわれわれのグループだけのようです。何はともあれ見られてよかったー。
見つけた三つのポイントは毎度のことながら石垣島ナンバーワン野鳥ガイドのスポッターさんに連絡済みです。^^
スポッターさんに教えていただいたソリハシセイタカシギ3個体も見ることができましたが、近くで工事が始まった途端にどこかへ飛んでいってしまいました。
シギは今季初のセイタカシギとムナグロを確認したほか、アカアシシギやタシギ、タカブシギ、アオアシシギなどが断続的に島に入ってきています。
一日中、曇天模様でしたがカンムリワシ、ズグロミゾゴイ、ムラサキサギの八重山農地三大留鳥は多くの出会いがあり、那覇からの友人と共に、みなで楽しめました。^^
リュウキュウアカショウビンの鳴き声も聞こえているので探しましたがこちらは見つからず。4月に入れば見やすくなるのでそれまであと2週間ですね。
キンバトはオスの鳴き声の確認とメスが飛び去る姿を一瞬確認しました。キンバトが見やすくなるのはまだ先です。
探鳥後は、私の家族も交えて6人でいつもの餃子屋で祝杯をあげました。^^
Bagged the Eurasian Hoopoe — my top target. After preening, it fanned its crest open.

This individual was opening its crest frequently.
Adult male Common Blackbird. Beautiful.
The Common Blackbird appears to be rummaging through dead grass in search of insects.
Three Pied Avocets. A flock of eight had been observed on Yonaguni Island — whether the same group or different, I'm not sure.
Adult Purple Heron. I encountered many individuals in grasslands and rice paddies.

A Crested Serpent Eagle from the north.
These two Crested Serpent Eagles were in the same pasture. Probably a pair.
Adult Malayan Night Heron. First-summer plumage, perhaps?
Adult male Brown Shrike. Molt is well advanced and it's looking rather ragged.

Common Redshank in nearly full summer plumage. A few birds had come down into a drainage channel.
Adult female Black-winged Stilt. This one arrived on its own.
Eight Pacific Golden Plovers were on the school playground. No Greater Sand Plovers mixed in. ^^;
I thought the first wave of Common Snipe had moved on, but I found two.
First-year male Common Kestrel. Quite a few juvenile feathers remain in the wing coverts, so first-summer plumage seems right.
Eurasian Coots had thinned out in number. In recent years some overwinter — or rather, oversummer — on the Okinawa mainland, but I don't see that on Ishigaki.
初代EOS Kiss DigitalからEOS-1D X Mark IIまで約15年来のCanonユーザーでしたが、ついにSONYへ浮気。^^;
α9 II と FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS を購入しました。初撮影は0歳児の子守中だったのでとりあえずカンムリワシやムラサキサギ、タカブシギなど目についた鳥でテスト。
電子ファインダーやボディの小ささ、操作系の違いなどの違和感を懸念していましたが、全く問題なし。強いて言えば、シャッターボタンが近すぎてたまに見当違いのところを押下しようとしてしまいましたが、慣れるでしょう。1D X Mark IIとEF600mm F4L IS II USMの重くて大きなセットに比べると取り回しも画質もよく最高です。
速い飛びものや逆光、低照度の悪環境、夜間のフラッシュを使用した撮影などの性能や使い勝手も気になるところです。
Shooting a Crested Serpent Eagle handheld at 600mm, 1/160s, looking up while standing — an unstable position, but the 5.5-stop image stabilisation is no joke.
Also handheld, a distant juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle. The higher pixel count means better cropping headroom too.
A Purple Heron appeared out of nowhere and I grabbed a shot handheld from inside the car. Good handling really makes a difference when you have to react fast.
The autofocus tracks well. The subject is large and slow, so I haven't been able to test it properly yet…
Good numbers of Wood Sandpipers had dropped into the rice paddies. Moulting from winter to summer plumage.
家族旅行で沖縄本島に行ったついでに子どもを寝かしつけてから少しだけ時間をもらい夜探を敢行。
寒くて時間も遅く条件は悪かったのですが、繁殖期に入っていることもあり、いつものポイントを回るとリュウキュウオオコノハズク5個体に出会えました。やはりオオコノハズクはいい鳥です。^^
ヤンバルクイナは1羽だけ発見。樹上で寝ているところを撮影しました。この時期、カップルになったヤンバルクイナが並んで寝ているところを狙ったのですが、独身のヤンバルクイナだったようです。
他には、すでにペアになっていると思われるリュウキュウアオバズク2ペアを観察しました。オオコノハズクと違い繁殖はまだ先なのですが、すでにペアリングしているようでした。
Temperatures are still low in Yanbaru. This Buffy Fish Owl had its feathers puffed up and looked cold. The individual was occasionally calling back and forth with a male.
