We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
南部の畑では幼鳥混じりのツバメチドリの群れがコンスタントに確認できるようになりました。南下組が日替わりでやってくるのでしょうか。きょうの群れは、成鳥5羽と幼鳥1羽でした。

All the adults were in mid-transition from breeding to non-breeding plumage.
沖縄の北にある台風の影響なのか風が強く吹きつけていました。いつもは遥か遠くで狩りをしているベニアジサシの群れが、誰もいないビーチで休んでいました。台風で繁殖に失敗しているからか、求愛のような行動をしているペアもいくつかいました。
なんとか台風に耐えた巣があれば、あと1カ月もしたら巣立ちビナを連れてやってくるかもしれませんね。

沖縄でもシギやチドリ、カモなどの秋の渡りが始まりました。
いつもの水路には全くいなかったシギ、チドリが田起こしたあとに雨水がたまった田んぼに大集合していました。タカブシギ50、コチドリ30、トウネン10、アオアシシギ10、コアオアシシギ3、セイタカシギ2です。
近くには渡ってきたカルガモが2羽いました。カモ渡りが始まるのはもう少しあとです。ツバメも数を増やし、電線に数えきれないほど止まっていました。多分、300羽ほど。留鳥のリュウキュウヒクイナは目の前を通過していったけど、イグサに阻まれてうまく写りませんでした。^^;
今年の春の渡りは沖縄は、石垣島なども含めて全く鳥がいませんでしたが、秋の渡りはなんとか楽しめそうな予感がします。
帰り道、海岸にはベニアジサシ数十羽の群れが休んでいた。エリグロアジサシも数羽。ソリハシシギが1羽とシロチドリが数羽いた。

There were plenty of Wood Sandpipers.

The first duck to arrive in the migration was the Eastern Spot-billed Duck.
Several hundred Barn Swallows.

Roseate Terns and Black-naped Terns were resting on the offshore rocks.
久しぶりにやんばるで夜探してきました。リュウキュウコノハズクの巣立ちがピークを迎えているようで7家族20羽の巣立ちビナを見つけることができました。ヒナたちはずいぶん大きくなり、自由に飛び回っていた。
リュウキュウオオコノハズクの餌場では、コノハズクとオオコノハズクのバトルが勃発。もちろんオオコノハズクが勝ち、コノハズクは退散しました。2羽同時に観察すると、図鑑などの数値で見るより大きさがずいぶん違いました。
ヤンバルクイナも7羽ほど確認。なぜか2羽は深夜0時ごろに連れ立って道路を横断していきました。何があったんだろう?
コノハズクのヒナたちは何時ごろまで起きているのか確認しようとある家族を観察していたのですが、あまりにも眠くなり2時ごろまでしか彼らが活動しているのを確認できませんでした。
The facial expression is the same as an adult, but the juvenile plumage is still quite prominent.
It received an Okinawa tree lizard from a parent.
The tree lizard was about the same length as the Ryukyu Scops Owl itself, so it was struggling to swallow it.

Something seemed to be moving in the grass, so I watched it closely for a while.
When I went to the Ryukyu Eagle-Owl's feeding ground, the usual individual was catching cockroaches and cicada larvae. The Ryukyu Eagle-Owl, which has finished raising its chicks earlier than the Ryukyu Scops Owl and Grey Nightjar, has already begun moulting from around the eyes.

A Okinawa Rail sleeping in a tree. I'm not sure if it's the same individual, but it generally sleeps in the same tree.
There was light rain, so Ryukyu kajika frogs were calling here and there.
The next most commonly seen after the Ryukyu kajika frog is the Holst's frog. This is quite a large and impressive frog.
The Barringtonia flowers were in full bloom, drifting a sweet fragrance through the air.
きょうは、立秋。まだまだ暑いですが、近所のローソンでは、おでんの準備をしていました。
野鳥の世界でも秋の渡りが始まり出したようで、海岸にはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ツバメチドリ、ハマシギ、トウネンなどが数を増やしています。
フラッグを付けたキョウジョシギもいました。フラッグには「WBY」の文字、メタルリングには「TO WILD 2601 AUS 052-7289」と記されていました。オーストラリアはタスマニアで放鳥された個体です。Google Maps で沖縄からタスマニアまでの距離を測ってみたら約7800キロもありました!! 現在、詳細を山階鳥類研究所に問い合わせ中なので、詳しいことが分かり次第、追記します。
三角池には、越夏したクロツラヘラサギが6羽。「E24」と「V08」の足環をつけた個体もいました。E24は足指の付け根がまだ少し腫れているように見えました。

Only one Grey Plover. Too far away, and the heat haze was so bad I couldn't get it in focus. ^^;
Pacific Golden Plovers in a small flock. They're now being seen on tidal flats and in rice paddies too.

Long-toed Stint is the shorebird of Okinawa, but numbers are still low.
Wood Sandpiper in breeding plumage. Numbers are steadily increasing in rice paddies and irrigation channels.
Kentish Plover appears to have finished breeding.

"E24" is still going strong. The right leg it injured around spring appears to have almost fully healed.
現場では、ヨーロッパトウネンと思っていましたが、写真を見てみるとトウネンでした。残念。
足の長さやくちばしの形状、主翼が尾羽を超えるなど非常にヨーロッパトウネンに似ていますが、夏羽から冬羽へと移行中のトウネン成鳥です。
I was convinced this individual was a Little Stint, but it's a Red-necked Stint. ^^;

ジシギの渡りも始まったようです。きょうは田んぼにチュウジシギが7羽入っていました。他にもシギ・チドリが渡ってきています。
First Swinhoe's Snipe of the season.
It was threatening a Blue Rock Thrush and hopping about. Very Pin-tailed Snipe-like behaviour.

I managed to photograph 5 individuals, but observed 7 in total.
三角池にアカアシシギが10羽ほど入っていました。お互い近づきすぎるとすぐケンカ。^^;
ヒバリシギとアカアシシギはケンカっ早いのか、トラブっている場面をよく見ますね。
One of them flew up onto the other.
It pins the other down around the shoulders with both feet.
The bird underneath fled.
今季初のオグロシギが1羽、金武の田んぼにいました。ツメナガセキレイも初確認。こちらは、数羽が田植えが終わったばかりの田んぼの中や畦にいました。
カルガモは3羽、ツバメチドリやムナグロ、アオアシシギ、アカアシシギなど少しずつ秋の渡りの鳥たちが増えていました。処暑を過ぎても暑い沖縄ですが、秋の渡りは少しずつ進んでいるようです。
最近、金武で数を減らしているバンは、きょうは幼鳥、成鳥含めて10羽ほどがいました。渡ってきたのでしょうか?

The first Eastern Yellow Wagtails of the season — a small flock of several birds.
The Eastern Yellow Wagtails were foraging among the rice seedlings. I could hear their calls, but they kept hiding in the shadow of the rice, making photography quite a challenge.

A Common Moorhen hatched this year.
A group of three Eastern Spot-billed Ducks had come into the paddies.
田んぼのジシギが 10日ほど前に今季初確認 して以来、増えてきました。写真に撮れた5個体は全てチュウジシギでした。写真に撮れなかったジシギも数羽。飛ぶ後ろ姿を見るにチュウジシギと思われますが…。

今季初確認となるエリマキシギとウズラシギが1羽ずつ、同じ田んぼに入っていました。最初にエリマキシギが目についたのですが、すぐそばにもう一羽とても小さなエリマキシギ? と思ったら背羽を立てたウズラシギでした…。^^;
エリマキシギはちょうど1カ月前に海岸で見ている のですが、渡りが本格化したシーズン初ということで…。
ウズラシギとエリマキシギは行動を共にしており、まるで大きなエリマキシギに憧れるウズラシギが羽を立てて真似をしているようでした。^^
先日見つけたオグロシギ は水のなくなった同じ田んぼにまだいた。すぐ隣には水の張った田んぼがあるので移動すれば良さそうなのですが気に入っている模様。
クロハララアジサシも変わらず3羽いました。

There were also moments when the Ruff struck this threatening pose to drive away a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper that had come too close.

リュウキュウアカショウビンを2カ所で幼鳥1羽と成鳥3羽の合わせて4羽を確認できました。この時期、4羽に出会えるとは意外でした。
最初のポイントは、毎年、営巣が確認されている場所。しかし、今年は巣穴を見つけられずにいましたが、どこかで子育てをしていたようです。昨年は3羽の巣立ちを確認。今回、見たのは1羽だけでしたが、ほかのヒナはすでに親元を去ったのか、それとも藪の中にいたのか…。
もう一カ所も毎年、やってくるのでどこかで繁殖をしているものと思われますが、巣は見つけられず。こちらはすでにヒナたちは親元を離れているようでしたが、親鳥2羽は、同じ縄張りでペアを維持しているようでした。

The bird above dropped the crab's legs and other parts, then called out without eating it itself — I thought "there must be a recently fledged chick nearby," and sure enough a juvenile came flying out of the undergrowth. Even at this size they're still being fed by the parent.
The adult, now in molt and looking ragged. A grueling migration still awaits from here.
I hope to see them back in good shape next year.
リュウキュウオオコノハズクとリュウキュウコノハズクの巣立ちビナ。
オオコノハズクは巣立ち後、2カ月近く経っていると思われます。親の縄張りで例年通り、羽化のため地表に出てくるセミの幼虫などを捕まえているようでした。 昨年は、巣立ちビナを3羽同時に見られました が、今回は2羽だけでした。
コノハズクも巣立ちのピークをすぎており、 前回は7家族20羽のヒナ が見られましたが、今回は成鳥1羽と巣立ちビナ2羽だけでした。
沖縄で繁殖するフクロウは オオコノハズク 、 コノハズク 、 アオバズク と3種類いますが、ヒナの可愛さではオオコノハズクが圧倒的ですね。^^

This one is a fledgling Oriental Scops Owl.
Hunting insects and other prey on the ground.
Most of the body is still covered in juvenile plumage, but a few adult feathers are visible around the breast.
I hope the chicks will visit again next year.
8月最終日、人気の田んぼには色々集まってきます。
オグロシギやエリマキシギ、クロハラアジサシにトウネン、ヒバリシギ、アカアシシギ、チュウジシギなどが集合していました。
オグロシギはもう1週間の滞在になります。エリマキシギは5日目の滞在。そのほかのシギやチドリは入れ替わっているのかいないのか…。

On its fifth day here, the juvenile Ruff has moved to the same paddy field as the Black-tailed Godwit.
