The dark-morph Grey-faced Buzzard that has been overwintering on Ishigaki Island every year since 2018 has returned again this year. It was a juvenile in the first year, so it is now 5 years old. It has been gradually becoming less wary, and this year I was able to observe it at quite close range.

The Black-winged Kite first appeared on Ishigaki Island in 2015 and has been breeding steadily ever since, to the point where it can now be seen all over the island — and it has finally moved into town as well. On this day I confirmed two birds flying together over the MaxValu in Maesato. I also frequently see them foraging on the wasteland to the east of Ishigaki City Hall.

A Tundra Swan arrived for the first time in about two years. Last time it stayed until spring — I wonder how long this one will stick around. It shows almost no wariness, so it would be great if it settles in for a long stay.

Crested Serpent Eagles are becoming more active ahead of the breeding season. I've been hearing them calling back and forth and often seeing them soaring over their territories.

Chinese Pond Herons are overwintering at several locations. Once they step into the grass they blend right in and become very hard to spot.

Eurasian Coots increased sharply after November began. Two years ago they were frequently attacked by Upland Buzzard. This season an Eastern Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, and Peregrine Falcon are all present, so it looks like it will be a tense winter for the coots.

For waders, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Long-toed Stint, Common Snipe, and Wood Sandpiper are all staying on.

I recorded my first Gadwall of the season. Tufted Duck and Eurasian Wigeon numbers are also building up at the dam.

Tundra Swan for the first time in two years. It doesn't seem particularly wary.

Opportunities to see Red Collared Dove are increasing. Pied Avocet is also turning up at multiple sites.

Yellow Bittern appears to be numerous, as it was last year. As a side note, last November was a miraculous year in which all Japanese members of the bittern genus were seen within a single month — Black Bittern, Von Schrenck's Bittern, Yellow Bittern, and Cinnamon Bittern!!

The snipe remaining on Ishigaki Island are now almost entirely Common Snipe.

A Red Collared Dove arrived, male and female, and were feeding on unharvested rice alongside Oriental Turtle Doves.

The first Amur Stonechat of the season confirmed in the paddy field area. In strong winds it appeared to be foraging, moving from branch to branch.

Geese and ducks are increasing. Garganey in particular seem numerous this season — they are being recorded all over the paddies. A Mallard also arrived, which is unusual for Okinawa. The two Lesser White-fronted Geese have now been here two weeks, joining up with Taiga Bean Geese and Greater White-fronted Geese to form a group of 26.

The Pheasant-tailed Jacana found on 12 October is still present, six days on. A tractor came through to work the field but the bird seemed largely unbothered and kept foraging.

The two Lesser White-fronted Geese are also still here — today is day ten. They continue to associate with the Taiga Bean Goose as before. Twelve Greater White-fronted Geese also arrived and briefly joined the group, but they eventually parted ways and are keeping to themselves.

Juvenile Pheasant-tailed Jacana. It showed no fear of the tractor and was snatching prey turned up by the fieldwork.

A juvenile Pheasant-tailed Jacana dropped into a paddy field. It appeared to be feeding on small freshwater snails. In a normal year they turn up between late October and early November, so this one is a little early.

I went to Nagoya for a post-operative check-up after cervical spine surgery and did some birding while I was there. After three years of trying, I finally got to see Western Sandpiper. I also observed Broad-billed Sandpiper, Great Knot, and Red-necked Stint.

Along with the Western Sandpiper, Baikal Teal and Japanese Wagtail were lifers for me.

The Little Stint was at first sitting and resting in a hollow, but there was something about it that felt slightly off. ^^ Still, once it mixes into a flock of Red-necked Stints it gets difficult.

A Pied Avocet has been staying for several days. I feel like I see them year-round on Ishigaki-jima — there must be wintering individuals in Okinawa and the Yaeyamas.

Pin-tailed Snipe was a good year, but most have moved on and they take some finding now. I managed to confirm number 20. Swinhoe's Snipe are plentiful.

アカエリヒレアシシギが飛来。今季2個体目。エリマキシギは複数個所で複数羽が到着。ハリオシギは数を減らしつつも滞在中。

It was in a paddy field near the airport in an area where Red-necked Phalaropes often turn up. They apparently visit the stadium frequently too — perhaps they are easily attracted to lights.

台風11号襲来直前にハリオシギが、これまでに経験したことのないくらい増えました。

チュウジシギ十数羽の群れの中にハリオシギを2羽見つけて写真を撮っていると風が強くなる中、7羽のハリオシギの群れが空から目の前に降ってきました。全て幼鳥でした。

他の田んぼに移動すると、ハリオシギ6羽の群れを発見。今季は異常なほどハリオシギが多い印象です。尾羽写真もじゃんじゃん貯まります。^^

「針尾が見えてるか見えていないか」の観察条件が悪い時のパターンも、かなり経験を積むことができました。

今季初のタシギを確認しました。これで石垣島のジシギ3種はそろい踏み。現在、ハリオシギがピークを迎えており、石垣島では、この後チュウジシギが優勢になり、最後はタシギだらけになります。

The first Common Snipe of the season was a juvenile.

先日の3羽のオウチュウ は5羽に数を増やしていました。4カ所で7羽いたうちのどれかが、合流して5羽になったのか新たに渡ってきたのか分かりませんが、一度に5羽のオウチュウが集まるなんて初めてのことです。

クロハラアジサシが複数入り、その中にハジロクロハラアジサシの夏羽が1羽いました。田んぼの上をひらひらと飛びながら虫をとっていました。

沖縄では珍しい、黒々とした夏羽に衣替えしたツルクイナがいました。石垣島には冬羽や幼鳥は定期的に現れますが、夏羽は珍しいです。

田んぼではウズラシギやタシギ、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギなど渡り途中の個体が入れ替わりで立ち寄っています。

コシアカツバメ、ヒメアマツバメ、ショウドウツバメ、ツバメの4種がまざった群れも飛来。天気が悪い中、田んぼを飛び回りながら餌をとっていました。

頸椎症性脊髄症の手術のため、3月30日から4月19日まで名古屋に滞在していました。うち入院は11日間でしたので、その前後で鳥見して来ました。限られた時間なのでほとんどをオオジシギ探しに費やしました。地元の方にポイントなど教えてもらったのですが、残念ながら成果は出ずでした。^^;

2羽目のソリハシセイタカシギと今季初のサルハマシギが入りました。ミユビシギ、オジロトウネンもぼちぼちやってきています。タシギは越冬組と渡り組が合わさり多くの個体を見ることができます。

水路にツルシギが2羽飛来していました。セイタカシギの群れと行動を共にしていました。セイタカシギは20羽程度の越冬組。タシギは越冬組に渡り組が加わって数を増やしています。一つの田んぼに10羽以上いるエリアもありました。

淡水シギで渡りのトップを切ったタカブシギは数を増減させて入れ替わっているようです。

コチドリは大きな群れも入り出してすっかり夏羽に変わった個体も多くいます。

小鳥の渡りも活発になってきています。ノビタキを始め、キビタキやルリビタキなどが確認されています。

仕事中にヤツガシラがいると連絡をもらい、時間を見つけて行きましたが、すでに移動した後か見つからず。副産物としてジャワアカガシラサギを発見しました。

沈砂池のメジロガモは、ほかのカモがほとんど消えたのにまだ滞在中。

海岸では春の渡りのシギやチドリが入れ替わり飛来します。この日はオオメダイチドリが特に多かったです。ほかには、シロチドリが数十羽にキョウジョシギ十数羽、ダイゼンが数羽、アオアシシギ、トウネン、ムナグロ、イソシギなど。

田んぼでは越冬組と渡り組のタシギが混在しています。セイタカシギやアカアシシギ、タカブシギなども増えてきました。

昨年の秋から今年にかけてオス3羽、メス1羽を確認したヨシガモ。シーズンで4羽も見るのは、沖縄ではかなり珍しいです。オカヨシガモのメス4羽と行動を共にしていました。

タシギは越冬組に渡り組が加わり多少賑やかになってきましたが、タシギ以外のジシギの確認はまだです。

繁殖シーズンに入っているタマシギが数日間、同じ草むらの中にいます。巣作り中なのでしょうか。

ズグルミゾゴイも繁殖シーズン到来で婚姻色が出だしています。

ハクセキレイも移動が活発で、20羽程度の群れをいくつか見ました。ホオジロハクセキレイも混じっています。

ツグミも増えたり減ったりで入れ替わりが激しい模様。春の渡りが始まっているようです。

水の張られた田んぼにはセイタカシギやアマサギ、アオサギが飛来していました。こちらも春の渡りの最中だと思われます。

ここ数日でヤツガシラが3カ所で4羽飛来しています。今季は、だらだらと断続的にヤツガシラがやってきます。今月だけで6羽ほどが石垣島内で確認されています。

最近は、なにかと忙しくてつまみ食いのような鳥見しかできていませんね。早くコロナが落ち着いて生活が元に戻るのを願っています。

今季2個体目のクイナ。前回は水路で今回は田んぼ。クイナとヒメクイナは毎年のように確認されますが、警戒心が強くてなかなか撮影まではいたりませんね。今回はタシギを見ていたらひょっこり現れました。^^ 以前から同所で越冬している個体だと思われます。

家族旅行で年末年始を沖縄本島で過ごしたついでに昨年の11月22日から滞在中のハイイロガン5羽を見てきました。正月の夜には4時間ほど夜探にでかけ、リュウキュウオオコノハズクやヤンバルクイナ、ヤマシギなどを観察しました。

出だしが悪く、やんばる夜の御三家コンプリートは厳しいかと思われたのですが、午前2時過ぎまで粘ってなんとか。オオコノハズクは鉄板ポイントを何カ所か回るも見つけられずでしたが、小雨が降り出すと鳴き声も3個体聞け、姿も3個体見ることができました。繁殖期のさえずりと思われる鳴き声も録音できました。下の動画から聞くことができます。

ヤンバルクイナは2羽、ヤマシギも2羽でした。久しぶりの長時間夜探は疲れました…。^^;

三角池では、2013年に韓国で標識された個体含めて15羽のクロツラヘラサギが所狭しと採餌していました。
