Lesser White-fronted Goose, Siberian Pipit, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Caspian Tern all photographed for the first time this season in one go. Red Collared Doves continue to stay at multiple locations.

Common Snipe numbers are growing as birds settle into wintering mode. Dunlin, Green Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, and Common Redshank are also wintering in the island's paddies, though in small numbers.

Among raptors, Crested Serpent Eagle is becoming easier to find, and Common Kestrel, Grey-faced Buzzard, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, and Peregrine Falcon are all increasing.

I have found a Grey-headed Swamphen — a first record!! There were apparently three records on the mainland in the 1970s and one on Okinawa Island in 1995, but all have been ruled as escapes, so there is no accepted record. There is therefore a strong possibility this will become the first accepted national record after further review.

A planned assignment was cancelled, so I reluctantly stopped by the paddies — and found it. At first I thought it was a Watercock, but when I put binoculars on it, question marks started spinning through my head. "Wait, a Takahē?" "No, Takahē can't fly." "Could this be a Grey-headed Swamphen!!!!!!" — and the enormity of it became real.

The genus Porphyrio has several members worldwide; they were formerly treated as subspecies, but after splitting the IOC list now recognises at least seven species. Among them, this bird struck me as closest to the Philippine Swamphen.

In the 2023 eighth edition of the Check-List of Japanese Birds it is listed as a species under consideration. I would like to take this opportunity to write up a report and have it elevated from that status.

When a bird you hadn't even considered turns up, you have no idea what you're looking at…. ^^;

The Javan Pond Heron staying since late August was still feeding with no sign of wariness.

Cinnamon Bitterns are dispersing — this year's fledglings are turning up all over the place. Many individuals are crossing roads, and I have witnessed two traffic casualties in the past month.

One White-winged Tern was mixed in with a flock of Whiskered Terns.

I confirmed the first juvenile Grey-tailed Tattler of the season. Swinhoe's Snipe and Pin-tailed Snipe have crashed in numbers after the typhoon — almost none left. Snipe-watching will have to wait until the next wave arrives.

The Greater Painted-snipe chicks from the first brood of the year are fully grown but still seem to be moving around together as siblings. A second brood is underway and I am seeing adults with small chicks.

A flock of around 200 Eastern Cattle Egrets came into the paddies. Numbers will keep climbing.

First Grey-tailed Tattler juveniles of the season. All five birds in the flock were juveniles.

Three juvenile Cinnamon Bitterns were in rice paddies in the same area — likely three siblings. A juvenile Purple Heron was nearby. In the forested hills, Malayan Night Herons are breeding; two fledglings appear to have left their parents.

The Chinese Pond Herons that have been wintering since last year — about four of them. One individual appears to be a Javan Pond Heron. When the tractors started turning over the paddies, they joined the Eastern Cattle Egrets and took part in the attendant feeding.

Purple Herons can be found as young birds from last year as well as adults. The adults are in nuptial colour and looking particularly fine.

Wader numbers in the paddies have dropped considerably; just scattered Common Greenshank, Common Redshank, Green Sandpiper, and Black-winged Stilt. The wintering Common Snipe seem to have headed north, and almost none remain. Looking forward to the arrival of passage birds.

A Eurasian Bittern that has been staying since last year. There are several individuals, but one of them shows no wariness at all and can be watched closely. It has been appearing reliably of late, and its behaviour — so utterly unlike the other herons — is a real pleasure to observe. ^^

A Eurasian Bittern appeared right in front of me. It noticed me but showed no alarm.

At year-end, having coughed up blood to get all my copy filed before the end of the year, I squeezed in a short final birdwatch for 2022.

Entering December, Dusky Thrushes, Brown-headed Thrushes, and Pale Thrushes had increased sharply. Most of the Dusky Thrushes were Naumann's Thrushes, and the variation in plumage tones makes comparing them a pleasure in itself. Brown-headed and Pale Thrushes have also relaxed since shortly after arrival and are easier to observe.

Manchurian Bush Warblers and Dusky Warblers were calling from patches of scrub here and there, though slightly fewer than last year.

Daurian Redstart, Amur Stonechat, Red-throated Pipit, and Eastern Yellow Wagtail are also wintering.

In addition to the three Ruddy Shelduck already present, four Common Shelduck also arrived. Tundra Swans, Common Cranes, and Eurasian Spoonbills continue to stay on.

Among the ducks, Northern Shoveler were the most numerous, followed by Eurasian Wigeon, Eurasian Teal, and Tufted Duck. Ferruginous Duck has not been confirmed this season.

Large numbers of Common Snipe are wintering; among roughly 200 counted across multiple paddies, there was one Swinhoe's Snipe.

Crested Serpent Eagles — both immatures and adults — have become easier to see. Road casualties will increase from here on, so care is needed when driving on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island.

6月6日に現れたソリハシセイタカシギ はまだ滞在しています。いつまで居る気なんでしょう。海岸ではチュウシャクシギ9羽の群れが飛来。早すぎるので秋の渡りとしてよいものなのか迷います…。

田んぼにはタカブシギやアオアシシギ、セイタカシギなどもぱらぱらと飛来しています。

Arrived out of season and has already been here over three weeks.

この時季、島内には留鳥、渡り含めて多くのサギの仲間が滞在中。

留鳥のズグロミゾゴイとムラサキサギは繁殖を控えて活発になっています。渡り途中のクロツラヘラサギとヘラサギも合わせて10羽ほどが確認されています。ほかにはアマサギやコサギ、チュウサギ、チュウダイサギ、アカガシラサギ、ゴイサギなどが渡り途中に立ち寄っています。

カモは石垣島で繁殖するカルガモ以外はすっかりいなくなったのですが、なぜか、ヨシガモのオスが1羽だけ残っていました。ケガなどなければいいのですが…。

昨年10月ごろから滞在のジャワアカガシラサギは元気に越冬中です。第1回冬羽と思われる羽衣の換羽はまだ進んでいないようです。

沈砂池のメジロガモは2羽滞在中。池の周りの草を刈られたのでいなくなってしまわないかと心配していましたが、問題ないようです。同じ沈砂池にはハシビロガモやオカヨシガモ、コガモ、カルガモなども滞在中。

12月に入り、カンムリワシは成鳥、幼鳥とも特に見やすくなっており、1日で10羽以上出会うこともあります。

ムラサキサギも成鳥、幼鳥とも牧草地や収穫の終わったサトウキビ畑、田んぼなどで見ることができます。

石垣島内のズグロミゾゴイは、市街地への進出が拡大しているのか、シードー線以南でも多く見られるようになってきました。繁殖も行っていると思われます。

今季3個体目となるサンカノゴイに巡り会えました。水路を歩いていたので近くで観察することができました。警戒心が強いのか弱いのかよくわからない個体でした…。^^

バライロムクドリ2羽とミドリカラスモドキ2羽が現れました。撮影し損ねましたが、アサクラサンショウクイも1羽確認。海上が荒れたので石垣島に避難してきたのでしょうか?

昨日飛来したマガン25羽のクロツラヘラサギ1羽も滞在。オオハシシギは滞在20日となりました。

今季は出会いが多いオジロトウネンは2羽飛来しました。

職場と自宅周辺で少しだけ鳥見。

今季初のハシビロガモとオナガガモは前日、初認していましたが写真は撮れずでしたが、この日、ハシビロガモだけは写真の記録が残せました。シマアジは5羽の群れがやってきました。

海岸ではムナグロやダイゼン、キアシシギ、トウネン、メダイチドリなどが滞在中。

サトウキビ畑には警戒心の弱いカタグロトビがいました。石垣島のカタグロトビはずいぶん増えて、田んぼやサトウキビ畑、牧草地に行けばたいてい見られます。

今季初となるウズラシギを確認。ツバメチドリは子育てを終えて巣立ったヒナをくわえた30羽ほどの群れが田んぼにいました。

ムラサキサギは親子で餌取り。巣立ちビナは親鳥に餌をねだるもほとんど相手にされていませんでした。

アカアシシギは幼鳥を含めて数を増やしています。タカブシギはかなりの数が渡ってきました。タマシギは見やすくなっており、あちこちで出会います。

アマサギは、渡り途中と思われる20〜30羽ほどの群れを見るようになりました。

ツバメチドリは最初の繁殖地が耕されるなどアクシデントもありましたが、場所を変えておおむね順調に進んでいます。まだほとんど飛べないヒナから、親と変わらないぐらいに成長したヒナまでさまざまでした。

ベニバトは相変わらず、だらだらと現れます。以前は秋の渡りで飛来する印象でしたが、最近は一年中、石垣島にいるような気がします…。^^;

リュウキュウヨシゴイも子育て中のようで餌をとっては同じ茂みに入っていっていました。

ムラサキサギも田んぼに親子で登場。親鳥の給餌でも見られないか観察していましたが、まったく気配なし。かといって、幼鳥も自分で獲物をとるような仕草もなし。

シギはタカブシギが少しずつですが増えてきました。セイタカシギもパラパラと飛来。アカアシシギやヒバリシギは1〜2羽程度の少数で現れます。コチドリは十数羽の群れが田んぼにいました。

クロハラアジサシは数羽が複数箇所に飛来。飛び回りながら獲物をとっていました。

昨年と同じエリア で今年もズグロミゾゴイの繁殖がありました。ヒナは独り立ちしているようでした。 こちらのズグロミゾゴイのヒナ たちは巣立ちまでもう少しかかりそうです。

ムラサキサギも幼鳥を見る機会が増えてきました。各地で子育てが終わっているようです。

バンの繁殖はほとんど終わって、幼鳥を見る機会が増えているのですが、まだ小さなヒナを抱えたペアもいました。

リュウキュウアカショウビンは今季九つ目となる巣を発見。カラスが近くと親鳥が体当たりで追い払っていました。

今年3月に見つけたけがをしたアマサギに久しぶりに出会いました。やはり治ることはなく、飛べないようです。

昨日、石垣島に現れたブロンズトキ19羽の大群 は引き続き滞在中。これまでブロンズトキは籠抜けとか言われたり、そう記載した図鑑もあったりしますが、今回の飛来で修正されることを願います。

Canon のEOS-1D X Mark IIからSONYのα9IIに乗り換えてちょうど1年たちましたが、SONY初のプロ機となるα1が出たので買い換えました。発売日翌日に到着し、本日、少しだけ試し撮りしてきました。

α1での初撮りは、この時季の石垣島らしくヤツガシラ。きょうは2カ所で2羽の飛来を確認。ISO1600で撮影しましたがα9IIよりノイズは増えますね。5000万画素のハイレゾ機なのでしかたないです…。

次は暗い林道にトラツグミ。林道が狭くまともに撮れない状況でなんとか草の向こうにいる姿を撮影。手前の草にピントを取られることなく撮れました。

公園のペアのズグロミゾゴイは婚姻色で顔が真っ青に染まっていました。鳥瞳AFはしっかりと効いています。

ムラサキサギ、アマサギの飛翔時にも瞳AFは余裕で機能しました。若干、ムラサキサギは迷いましたが、アマサギの方は飛ぼうが歩き回ろうがしっかり目にピントが来ています。

α1の鳥瞳AFは、おそらくカワセミを重点的に学習させてあるようで、以下の写真のような米粒ぐらいの大きさの被写体でも一瞬でしっかりと目を検出していました。公園とかでカワセミ撮ってる金持ち団塊世代がターゲットなのでしょうか?^^;

シギやチドリは苦手なようで、遠いと瞳AFは使えませんが、それなりに近い被写体ならしっかりと目を検出していました。不思議なことにセイタカシギは近くても全く目を検出しません。学習が足りないと思われますので、新しいファームウエアに期待ですね。

カルガモやイシガキヒヨドリはバシッと目に反応していました。
