The Black Drongo that appeared near my home has been drifting slowly eastward and is now into its fourth day of stay. It is an unwary individual, always perched on the roadside wires. This season has been a bumper year for Black Drongo on Ishigaki Island — on peak days nearly 20 birds were recorded in a single day.

A small flock of Oriental Pratincoles had moved into the paddies. They were working the same area as the Whiskered Terns, but while the terns drifted low and picked insects off the rice plants, the pratincoles were up high, hawking incoming insects.

Black-faced Spoonbill, Eurasian Spoonbill and Chinese Pond Heron have also been dropping into the paddies one after another.

Oriental Pratincole and Kentish Plover are breeding well, with many fledged chicks on view. The Oriental Pratincoles in particular have formed a flock of nearly 60 juveniles. At the reclaimed land site, chicks from several Kentish Plover pairs have fledged and are running around energetically.

The Little Terns, which share the same site as the Kentish Plovers in a colony, had their nests flooded by heavy rain brought by the typhoon. Some eggs that had been submerged for several hours did hatch, but their prognosis looks poor.

In the rice paddies, juvenile Common Redshank arrived for the first time this season. Every year, Common Redshank is the first shorebird species to arrive as a juvenile.

Migrating waders and plovers are gradually increasing. Wood Sandpiper, Long-toed Stint and Grey-tailed Tattler have arrived in the paddies. On the coast, Greater Sand Plover, Siberian Sand Plover and Grey-tailed Tattler numbers are building.

Confirmed the first Swinhoe's Snipe of the season — two birds on a paddy bund. Several Common Snipe as well.

Six Pied Avocets arrived, which I believe is a record count for a flock here. The paddies also hold Common Redshank, Black-winged Stilt, Wood Sandpiper, Oriental Pratincole, and Grey-headed Lapwing — a scarce species on Ishigaki.

A small group of four pond herons — Javan Pond Heron and Chinese Pond Heron combined — is also lingering.

In the farmland on the western side of the island, Daurian Redstarts have arrived in large numbers. Apparently the situation is similar on Iriomote.

Oriental Pratincoles are increasing. On this day, nine were resting in the paddies, taking a break from the rain.

A Siberian Yellow Wagtail was on a paddy bund. The distance and the grass obscuring the bird made observation difficult; getting a few photos was the best I could manage. A Siberian Pipit was nearby.

The wintering Common Snipe have all but disappeared, though migrants are trickling through. Swinhoe's Snipe should be arriving soon.

Four Garganey turned up. If there's a duck that says spring on Ishigaki, it's the Garganey.

Found a Little Curlew while travelling for work. I always keep a 600 mm lens in the company car for moments like this. The Little Curlew was foraging in a pasture among a flock of Pacific Golden Plovers. Two Oriental Pratincoles were nearby as well.

In a separate paddy field, a Lesser White-fronted Goose, a Taiga Bean Goose, and a Greater White-fronted Goose are still present. The first Northern Pintail of the season has also arrived.

Juvenile Pacific Golden Plovers have finally been confirmed. The fact that juveniles haven't arrived until now makes me worry that breeding may not have gone well.

There were two Chinese Pond Herons, one Javan Pond Heron, and a Yellow Bittern. Oriental Pratincole and Whiskered Tern are also still present.

各地にハシブトアジサシが入っているようですが、石垣島にも到着。台風で疲れが見えるクロハラアジサシやツバメチドリも多く見られます。

アカエリヒレアシシギが飛来。今季2個体目。エリマキシギは複数個所で複数羽が到着。ハリオシギは数を減らしつつも滞在中。

It was in a paddy field near the airport in an area where Red-necked Phalaropes often turn up. They apparently visit the stadium frequently too — perhaps they are easily attracted to lights.

ツメナガセキレイはかなり数を増やしています。そんな中、今季初の幼鳥を確認しました。アオアシシギも今季初の幼鳥が飛来していました。

ツバメチドリもぱらぱらとやってきていますが、まだまだ数は少ないですね。

今季初となるコアオアシシギとヒバリシギの幼鳥を確認しました。成鳥に少し遅れて、ぞくぞくとやってきています。

ツバメチドリは石垣島内繁殖してる群れではないと見られる個体を確認。

リュウキュウヨシゴイは巣立ったヒナたちが親元を離れ出し、出会う機会が増えてきました。

今季もツバメチドリの繁殖が始まりました。 昨年のコロニー とほぼ同じ場所に40ペア程度が抱卵。すでにヒナも何羽か確認できました。

順調にいけば、これから7月中旬ぐらいまで子育てが続くと思われます。カタグロトビやカラス、ムラサキサギなどが近くいくると警戒を強めていました。

今季は、真っ黒な夏羽のハジロクロハラアジサシが石垣島に多く飛来します。ゴールデンウイークから十数羽を確認しています。クロハラアジサシも多く、50羽近い群れも確認されています。

ツバメチドリはコロニーを形成中。今のところ40つがいほどが繁殖しそうですが、毎年、農作業が入るのかが運命の分かれ道となります。

天気が悪くなるとアマツバメとヒメアマツバメの群れが低空を飛びます。低空と言っても、いつもよりは低いだけで、それなりに高いところを飛び回っています。

シマアカモズはどんどん減っているのですが、それでもまだ残っている個体がいます。

田んぼには全体的に数は少ないですがウズラシギやセイタカシギ、アオアシシギあたりが滞在中です。

Second sunny day of the month. Ishigaki Island has had an abnormal amount of rain this year, and clear skies are hard to come by. ^^;

昨年、集団営巣したエリア にことしもツバメチドリが帰ってきました。40つがい80羽ほどが確認されています。すでにペアリングは済んでいるようでしたが、産卵、抱卵はこれからのようです。

雨の降る田んぼではアカガシラサギやリュウキュウヨシゴイなどが活発です。ジャワアカガシラサギもまだ滞在中です。

春の渡りもほぼ終わったので数は少ないですが、海岸にはオオメダイチドリやメダイチドリ、ソリハシシギ、アカアシシギなどが滞在しています。そんな中、なぜかマガンが1羽だけいました。ほとんどワンタッチでどこかへ飛んでいってしまいました。

この春は渡りのコースが東よりなのか、石垣島ではシギやチドリの飛来数がとても少ないです。来月のピークにはもう少し、種類、数ともに増えることを期待しているのですが…。昨年秋の渡りが良すぎた反動でしょうか。^^;

今季初のヒバリシギを7月3日に確認してから遅れること1カ月半、やっと幼鳥が到着しました。ヒバリシギは成鳥も含めて個体数を増やしています

タカブシギ、アカアシシギは成鳥、幼鳥含めて日に日に増えています。

石垣島では少ないダイゼンも到着。ムナグロは数日前から見る機会が増えています。

ハリオシギは入れ替わりつつも成鳥、幼鳥とも出会いは多いです。

アマサギやチュウサギ、チュウダイサギ、アオサギも少しずつ数を増やしています。クロツラヘラサギは6月から島内をうろうろしている個体がいます。

今季初となるウズラシギを確認。ツバメチドリは子育てを終えて巣立ったヒナをくわえた30羽ほどの群れが田んぼにいました。

ムラサキサギは親子で餌取り。巣立ちビナは親鳥に餌をねだるもほとんど相手にされていませんでした。

アカアシシギは幼鳥を含めて数を増やしています。タカブシギはかなりの数が渡ってきました。タマシギは見やすくなっており、あちこちで出会います。

アマサギは、渡り途中と思われる20〜30羽ほどの群れを見るようになりました。

ツバメチドリは最初の繁殖地が耕されるなどアクシデントもありましたが、場所を変えておおむね順調に進んでいます。まだほとんど飛べないヒナから、親と変わらないぐらいに成長したヒナまでさまざまでした。

ベニバトは相変わらず、だらだらと現れます。以前は秋の渡りで飛来する印象でしたが、最近は一年中、石垣島にいるような気がします…。^^;

リュウキュウヨシゴイも子育て中のようで餌をとっては同じ茂みに入っていっていました。

ムラサキサギも田んぼに親子で登場。親鳥の給餌でも見られないか観察していましたが、まったく気配なし。かといって、幼鳥も自分で獲物をとるような仕草もなし。

シギはタカブシギが少しずつですが増えてきました。セイタカシギもパラパラと飛来。アカアシシギやヒバリシギは1〜2羽程度の少数で現れます。コチドリは十数羽の群れが田んぼにいました。

クロハラアジサシは数羽が複数箇所に飛来。飛び回りながら獲物をとっていました。

沖縄本島では何度か見たことがありますが、石垣島でこの数の集団営巣は初めて見ました。ヒナだけで十数羽。まだ抱卵中のツバメチドリもいました。

ムラサキサギがコロニー上空を飛ぶとツバメチドリのスクランブルが発動し、ムラサギサギを慌てさせていました。カラスはコロニー上空を避けて飛んでおり、ツバメチドリが制空権をしっかり握って上空を統制していました。^^

春の渡り中のシギやチドリを台風2号が直撃したため、飛翔力が高く天候が良ければ石垣島に降りずにノンストップで行ってしまうような大型のシギが多く降り立ちました。また、波が高いことから沖合の岩礁での休憩ができず、いつもより多くのシギとチドリが海岸に身を寄せていました。

この日、一番の収穫はコオバシギ。スポッターさんに教えてもらって現場に出向いたのですが、散歩の人に飛ばされてロストしたとのこと。近くを探してみると200メートルほど西の海岸に降りていました。

別の海岸にはオオソリハシシギ。こちらはノンストップで1万1000キロを飛べるとあって天候に恵まれた年は会えませんが、今回は台風の影響で4羽が飛来しました。

ホウロクシギも台風の影響が出だしてから立て続けに確認。この日は2羽が砂浜で採餌していました。

沖縄本島や宮古島では多くみられますが、なぜか石垣島では少ないチュウシャクシギも到着。オバシギ3羽とハマシギは数日前から場所を変えつつ滞在している模様。キアシシギは一気に数を増やして30羽ほどをカウント。ダイゼンは越冬組は抜けて渡り組が到着。キョウジョシギ、ムナグロ、アオアシシギ、メダイチドリなども台風で足止めを食らっていますが、これからどんどん北上していきます。

4月1日に石垣島に現れたブロンズトキは滞在20日となりました。当初19羽だった群れは少し数を減らしていますが、この日は13羽と3羽の群れに分かれていました。それぞれ田んぼでジャンボタニシを食いまくっていました。ペアのように行動を共にする個体もいてこのまま滞在したら繁殖するかもしれませんね。ジャンボタニシを食ってくれるなら水稲農家の味方になるのかもしれません。

リュウキュウアカショウビンは数を増やして林道や公園などあちこちで出会えます。

ツバメチドリも群れの出入りが激しいです。そんな中、単独で畑で休む個体がいました。

田んぼのシギはアオアシシギやヒバリシギ、セイタカシギが数を増やしています。
