We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
七つのリュウキュウアオバズクの営巣地のうち、3カ所で抱卵開始を確認しました。
今日は、職場近くの小学生たちとの鳥見でプレッシャーを感じつつ、執念で見つけだしたアオバズクです。多分、 一昨年に観察していたペア だと思いますが、 今年はオオコノハズクに営巣木を取られた ようで変な場所のモクマオウで営巣していました。^^; ふつーなら見つけられないような所でしたが、小学生の後押しのおかげで見つけられた。^^ 近くでは、シジュウカラも子育てに忙しそうで、大きなイモムシを巣へ運んでいた。
アオバズクの残り4巣も近いうちに確認しに行きます。

沖縄本島に赴任してきた年に見つけたリュウキュウアオバズクは3年連続で帰ってきました。1年目は巣立ちまで見届けましたが、昨年は忙しすぎて全く足を運べずでした。ことしは沖縄本島赴任最後の年になるので、巣立ちまで見届けたいものです。5月2日に来た時には、まだ抱卵していなかったことから計算するとヒナの巣立ちは、早くて6月30日前後でしょう。
ツミは抱卵はまだのようで、巣の近くをカラスが飛ぶとオスとメス2羽で執拗に攻撃していました。飛ぶスピード、身軽さともツミの方がカラスより格段に上なのでカラスは這う這うの体で退散していきました。

It was scattering the crows with sharp banking turns and steep dives. Like a fighter jet attacking a lumbering airliner. ^^;
先日の ノグチゲラ 、 オオコノハズク に続き、ツミとリュウキュウアオバズクも子育てに入りました。 アカショウビンは子育てに向けて鋭意巣作り中 。
ツミは、まだ求愛給餌したり巣作り中だったりするつがいもいれば、抱卵に入っているつがいもいました。 先日のツミ と合わせて近所で3つがいが営巣中。
アオバズクも抱卵に入っていました。こちらの巣立ちは、7月の第1週ごろの予定。 昨年は豪雨で巣が水浸しになり営巣失敗 したので今年こそは無事に巣立ってほしいものです。

After presenting the prey to the female, the male went straight into the nest and worked on nest-building. His red eye peeks out from the far side of the nest.
This Japanese Sparrowhawk had already begun incubating. I expect fledging around the beginning of July.
きょうから愛鳥週間が始まりました。1紙を除いた県内5紙の朝刊も1面をアカショウビンやノグチゲラ、サンコウチョウなどが飾っていました。沖縄には新聞社が県紙2社、地方紙4社の合わせて6社もあります。^^;
水場近くで待っているとリュウキュウサンコウチョウやメジロ、シジュウカラ、ヒヨドリが現れます。サンコウチョウは複数羽が水場を利用しているのですが、一瞬の水浴びなので写真に収めるのはかなり困難。^^;
水場周りにはセンダングサが茂り、数種類のチョウが乱舞していました。

沖縄地方は、本日、梅雨入りを迎えました。平年より1日早く、昨年より5日早い梅雨入りでした。
強い雨が降る中、リュウキュウアカショウビンの鳴き声が聞こえてきます。どこからだろうと耳を澄ましていたら、目の前に2羽のアカショウビンがやってきて巣作りを始めました。時折激しく降る雨は、アカショウビンの警戒心を緩めてくれるので、物陰から撮影することができましたが、次回はブラインド持参です。
1時間ほど巣穴を掘ったのち、どこかへ飛び去っていきました。本格的に掘り進めていたので試し掘りではなく、今後、営巣すると思われます。

A two-shot of Ruddy Kingfishers is hard to come by on Okinawa Island, so this was a real treat.
With the rain coming down, they were lively and active. I'm looking forward to seeing what prey the Ruddy Kingfishers on Okinawa Island bring to their chicks. ^^
