We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
泡瀬干潟ではダイシャクシギが30羽以上、ムナグロは数百羽が越冬しています。干潮時は遠くに散らばっていますが、満潮近くなると浅瀬に集まってきます。

Awave Tidal Flat is probably about the only place in Okinawa where you can see Eurasian Curlews gathered in numbers.
This single photo has over a hundred birds in it. In total, there were roughly three times that number.
ヤマシギをいつも見に行く場所は、行くだけで2時間かかっていましたが、この新規ポイントは自宅から1時間ほどの距離。しかもヤマシギまでの距離が近く、探しやすく写真も撮りやすい。
今回は、ヤマシギ撮影用の新たなアイテムを導入して臨みました。結果、今までよりストレスなくスピーディーに撮れるようになり、写真も上出来でした。^^
アオバズクもいたので写真を撮ろうと思ったら、獲物を捕まえてそのままどこかへ飛び去ってしまいました…。オオコノハズクとコノハズクは見つからず。鳴き声も聞こえなかった。

A total of three Eurasian Woodcocks were found on the lawn and in the grass.
The light from the right was a bit strong, and a heavy shadow fell to the rear left of the woodcock. ^^;
沖縄では数少ないヨシガモですが、 1月に海岸でメス幼鳥 を確認。今回は2羽のヨシガモで今年、3個体の確認です。ヨシガモは池の水草を食べていました。ヨシガモのメスはオスにはあまり興味がないようで、オオバンの後をついて回っていました。なぜ? ^^;
他にはヒドリガモやオカヨシガモ、オオバン、バンなども池におもいおもいに散らばって水草を食っていた。

The Falcated Ducks were dunking their heads into the water and feeding on aquatic vegetation below the surface.
The male Falcated Duck came very close and gave me a fine view of its beautiful plumage.
A few Gadwalls were at the far end of the pond.

昨年12月ごろから滞在のヘラサギ は多い時は3羽いましたが、現在は1羽のみが越冬中。同じく 11月から三角池で越冬中のエリマキシギ は最初はオスとメスの合わせて幼鳥2羽でしたが、現在は、メスが1羽のみ越冬中。換羽が進み幼羽もなくなっているようでした。
他には、コガモやハシビロガモ、アオアシシギ、セイタカシギ、タシギ、コチドリなどがいました。

There were around 20 each of Common Greenshank and Black-winged Stilt.
仕事で国頭村まで行ったついでにサトウキビ畑を見回ってみました。サシバはあちこちにチョウゲンボウは少数見られました。中でも人馴れしてそうなサシバを見つけたので、車内から狙ってみると獲物を見つけて飛び出しました。しかし、刈り取られたサトウキビの山から隠れて撮っていたので、肝心の狩りの瞬間は死角に入ってしまった…。回り込んで見てみると失敗した模様で呆然としたサシバが刈り取られたサトウキビ畑で佇んでいた。
シマアカモズは以前よりちらちらと気配があった個体。警戒心が強く、よく観察させてくれなかったけど、この日はしばらく待ってみると見やすい場所へ出てきてくれました。他のモズの可能性も期待したのですが、やはりシマアカモズでした。

It seems the prey got away — the bird just stood there looking dazed.
Adult female Brown Shrike. This winter there had been several brief glimpses of a bird I couldn't quite confirm as a Brown Shrike, so wary was it. At last it came out somewhere I could actually get a photo.
Once it caught prey, it went straight into the undergrowth. When it finished eating it came back out to a spot with a clear view and started hunting again.
