We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
三角池に、クロツラヘラサギが3羽いました。シギチは見当たりません。
Okinawa has been having scorching summer days one after another, yet the Black-faced Spoonbill is still here. ^^;
This Black-faced Spoonbill has a leg ring marked S80. What appears to be a GPS logger is attached to its back.
The Grey Heron had made a clean catch of a mullet.
シロチドリが3ペアほど営巣していました。孵化後数日のヒナも何羽か見られました。途中、海水浴客の飼い犬がシロチドリの営巣エリアに乱入していましたが、偽傷行動する親鳥を追いかけ回すだけでヒナに被害は出ませんでした。

These two Kentish Plovers were doing distraction displays to protect their chicks, but are they both females? Don't male Kentish Plovers take part in raising the young?
p.s. Apparently at this time of year feather wear is so heavy that it becomes hard to tell males from females. I was told the individual on the left is a male. The distinguishing point is that the lateral breast band is black. A researcher from Bird Research explained this to me.
If I sit in the shade on the sandy beach, they come within five or six metres.

Even when an Osprey flew over the Kentish Plover nesting area, the adults ignored it completely. They know it won't attack them.

先日、巣から顔を覗かせていた2羽のアオバズク のうち、どうも片方は巣立ったようで巣には1羽しか残っていませんでした。明日の昼にでも巣立ちビナを探してみよう。
午後8時に今夜最初の獲物を持ってきました。40分の間に6回という頻度で獲物をヒナへ運び、午後9時ごろには給餌を終了しました。最後の方は、ヒナの食い気がなくなり、なかなか餌を受け取らないような状況でした。なかなか狩り上手なアオバズクのペアです。^^
残っているヒナも今日明日中には巣立ちそうな感じでしたが、今夜は、妻の昆虫採集に付き合わないといけないので午後9時には引き上げました。
They've grown quite a lot.
It brought the first food at 8 p.m. The prey looks like a Japanese drone beetle or something similar.
Next it brought a moth.
Another moth again. The Brown Hawk-Owls here bring a wide variety of prey — moths, grasshoppers, Hierodula mantises, cicadas and more. Never once a cockroach.
From around 9 p.m. it's the usual pattern: the two of them sit watching the nest hole for ages.
This is a Brown Hawk-Owl at a different location, photographed three days ago. I expect this one will be fledging soon as well.
観察していた四つのアオバズクの営巣が数日の間で全て巣立ちました。しかし、巣立ちビナが確認できたのは1ペアだけ。^^; 先日の巣立ち寸前のアオバズク とは別の場所です。
ここ1カ月ほど、高校野球、参院選、県議会があり、なかなかバードウオッチングに時間が割けませんでした。来月からは秋の渡りも始まりだすのでなるべく時間を見つけて見廻りたいですね。
アオバズクは巣立ちの日が毎年ほとんど同じなので来年は、もう少し楽に観察出来そうです。^^
When I went to the Brown Hawk-Owl nesting site in the evening, one had already fledged. It was perched quite high up in a Casuarina tree.
Close by, a parent bird was keeping watch over its offspring.
I waited until night and was also able to observe feeding. It was so high up that I was shooting almost directly from below. I'm worried because this Brown Hawk-Owl chick's left wing looked as though it might be deformed. I hope I was just seeing things…
15日ぶりにバードウオッチングしてきました。こんなに長期間バードウオッチングしないと体調がおかしくなるね。^^;
成果は、いつものメンバーでホントウアカヒゲ、サンコウチョウ、アカショウビン、ヤンバルクイナ、ノグチゲラなど。ヤンバルクイナは、いつも通り道路を横断する個体ばかり。たまに林道で見つけたと思ったら撮影する間もなく藪の中へ…。ノグチゲラも数はそこそこいるのですが、撮れる場所には出てこない。
ホントウアカヒゲは、日の出から1時間も経たずして目視30以上、鳴き声を合わせると100近くが確認できました。巣立ちしたヒナも独り立ちし、ホントウアカヒゲが一年で一番個体数を伸ばす時期ですね。さえずってる個体も時々います。午前10時を過ぎると森の中に入ってしまい探すのは困難。
アカショウビンは、やっとやんばるで撮れたのですが、いざ撮影を始めたら枝にいた獲物を捕まえて谷へ降りてしまいました。獲物を枝に叩きつける音は聞こえるのですが、藪で姿が確認できず。タイミングの悪いこと…。^^;
ツミのメスもいましたが、やんばるの個体は警戒心が強いです。市内の公園に住むツミとは大違い。
I finally thought I'd got a shot of a Ruddy Kingfisher, and it came out like this. Right after this it grabbed prey in its bill and disappeared into the brush. If only I were on Ishigaki-jima, I could shoot to my heart's content.
A Okinawa Robin hatched this year. It has grown up well.

This one is an adult male. Breeding is over and it's mid-moult — looking quite ragged.

On the way back I stopped by Kijoka. There were a few Wood Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers, and Little Ringed Plovers in.
エリグロアジサシのコロニーを2カ所見てきました。まだ、抱卵中のペアや孵化後3週間以上たったヒナなど十数ペアが繁殖しています。海岸から営巣する小島まで30メートルほどしか離れていないので肉眼でもヒナが見えるほどです。
今年は台風がまだ来ていないので多くのヒナが巣立っていきそうです。^^
This pair had not yet started incubating.
A Black-naped Tern carrying a small fish prey. A blue flag is visible near the rump. It was also wearing a silver ring, but I couldn't read the code.
Since incubation was still going on as well, this chick is probably about 2 days after hatching.
This chick, visible only from the face, has grown considerably. Black-naped Terns fledge about 28 days after hatching, so this one is already more than 3 weeks old.

沖縄本島へ異動になってから半年。会社の送別会で石垣島に戻ったついでに24、25日の2日間、久しぶりの石垣島バードウオッチングを楽しんできました。やっぱり石垣島は野鳥の宝庫です。^^
数が多いので、 この田んぼ、畑、牧草地編 と 林道、森林公園編 と 特別編カタグロトビ の三つに分けて掲載します。
今回は、リュウキュウヨシゴイやツバメチドリなど石垣島の田んぼや畑、牧草地などで観察できる野鳥です。
リュウキュウヨシゴイは、沖縄本島にも生息するのですが、数が少なく撮影するのはなかなか大変。石垣島では、平田原で4個体を観察、撮影できました。しかも沖縄本島と違って、八重山産は警戒心が薄く撮影も楽勝です。
秋の渡りも始まりつつあるようで、田んぼにはアカアシシギやジシギ、クサシギ、タカブシギ、アオアシシギなどが入っていました。
ツバメチドリは年中観察できます。今回は、ツバメチドリの餌場となっている牛種子牧場で撮影です。入れ替わり立ち代り常に数羽が牧草の上を素早く飛び回り、獲物となる昆虫を捕まえていました。すっかり冬羽に変わっていました。

The plumage of the Ryukyu Yellow Bittern is a beautiful brown.
Once it blends into the dry grass, it is quite hard to find.

There was also a Common Snipe with little wariness. An adult.
The Common Redshank is transitioning from breeding to non-breeding plumage.

石垣島でバードウオッチングの林道、森林公園編です。リュウキュウアカショウビンやカンムリワシ、リュウキュウツミ、チュウダイズアカアオバトなどです。
沖縄本島でアカショウビンを探すのはやんばるまで行かないといけない上に、密度も少なく空振りに終わることが多いです。それに比べて、八重山、特に石垣島はリュウキュウアカショウビンが撮り放題!! 今回は、初日に10羽、2日目に4羽の合計14羽を観察することが出来ました。多くの個体で撮影も出来ました。初日の午前中は全く姿も鳴き声も聞こえずでしたが、昼のスコールの後には活性が上がってたくさん出てきました。
カンムリワシも久しぶりの再開です。運がいいことに幼鳥の観察もできました。7月に幼鳥を見たのは初めてです。子育て中で観察が比較的難しい時期でしたが、合計4羽撮影出来ました。
リュウキュウツミは、ちょうど親離れしたぐらいの若鳥に会えました。行動は幼い部分も残っていましたが、鋭い目つきは猛禽そのもの。リュウキュウクマゼミを捕らえて食っていました。
石垣島シリーズ(7月24、25日)
A Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher at the forest park. It would not be an overstatement to say I came to Ishigaki Island specifically to photograph this. ^^

This one is on a forest road. There was also a Ruddy Kingfisher still incubating. While incubating, it seemed to be occasionally enlarging the inside of the nest. There is also a video below.
Many of the Ruddy Kingfishers living in the forest park are used to people.

Over the roughly 30 minutes I was watching, it caught three Cryptotympana facialis cicadas. The sparrowhawk is so small that the cicadas look huge by comparison. There is also a video further down the page.

2015年の10月から石垣島に住み着くカタグロトビ3羽。約10カ月たった今もまだ滞在しているとのことなので友人でもあり スポッター石垣島ネイチャーガイドサービス を今年からスタートさせた河野さんにカタグロトビ撮影にはもってこいのポイントを教えてもらいました。あまりにいい景色なので親の仇のようにカタグロトビを連写しまくって撮影してきました。^^ 動画も撮影してきましたので鳴き声も聞けます。
スポッターは写真にこだわっているので、野鳥撮影がメインの方は、石垣島で唯一無二のガイドですよ。お勧めです。
カタグロトビは、巣材を運んだり、交尾したりしていましたが、繁殖するのでしょうか。ペア以外の個体が来ると追い回していました。

Shot at 1200mm with a 2× extender on the 600mm. This is a male, but the eye colour looks rather orange. A young bird, perhaps?
This is the female. The eyes are red like rubies. With Black-winged Kites, is the difference in eye colour between male and female a question of sex, individual variation, or age?
