GUIDED BIRDWATCHING TOUR
We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
ツバメチドリが20羽ほどの群れで農耕地に入っていました。幼羽や第1回冬羽、成鳥冬羽などの羽衣がいました。
近くのサトウキビ畑を餌場にしているようでした。
8月11日追記： 沖縄本島の師匠に間違いを指摘してもらい訂正しました。2枚目のツバメチドリです。顔つきからして成鳥の冬羽へ換羽中個体ということです。

石垣島ではそれほど珍しくないベニバトですが、沖縄本島でも観察できるとは思ってもみませんでした。最初は、シラコバトと勘違い。^^;
ベニバトの渡りのコースになっているなら、これからの季節は気をつけて探さないといけませんね…。
ベニバトとしては珍しく非常に警戒心の強い個体で、数枚撮れた後、近くを通ったトラックに驚いて飛び去ってしまいました。もう少し見たかったな。
A female Red Turtle Dove. On Ishigaki-jima I often saw them in rice paddies picking up fallen grain after the harvest, but on the Okinawa mainland they appeared to be picking up grass seeds on rough open ground.
ツバメチドリは畑などに20羽ほどの群れがいくつかいました。ムナグロもぼちぼち見られるようになってきました。砂浜には、チュウシャクシギも渡った来ていました。秋の渡りが少しずつ始まりつつあります。
三角池にはリュウキュウヨシゴイがいましたが、足元にいたので気づいた時は飛ばれた時でした…。^^; 干潮で浅瀬に追い込まれたティラピアを狙っていたようです。
A small number of Pacific Golden Plovers were moving through, turning up in fields and on tidal flats.
Oriental Pratincoles could be observed in flocks of around 20 birds at several locations.
The occasional Blue Rock Thrush too. They turn up everywhere — from Kumoji to Shintoshin, from fields in the south to the north.
昨日、立秋を迎え、秋の渡り途中のシギチが増えてきました。
海岸や田んぼには、コチドリやメダイチドリ、シロチドリ、アオアシシギ、キアシシギ、タカブシギ、イソシギが増えてきました。また、ツバメやリュウキュウツバメ、クロハラアジサシも渡ってきています。

In the mangrove wetlands, Common Greenshanks were dashing through the shallows chasing small fish. They did not seem to be having much luck catching them.
Nearby there was also a Grey-tailed Tattler. I saw many Grey-tailed Tattlers today.

今日は山の日なので取材が帰りに林道に寄ってきました。その林道入り口にいきなりアカショウビンがいて慌てました…。心の準備ができていないので飛ばしてしまったのですが、幸いなんとか見える場所に止まってくれました。
沖縄本島のアカショウビンは、生息密度が少ないようでなかなか見つかりません。
先日、 半年ぶりに帰った石垣島ではアカショウビンを見放題 でした。アカショウビン見るなら石垣島ですね。^^
足を伸ばして、 先月見つけたエリグロアジサシのコロニー も観察してきましたが、ほとんどのヒナはすでに飛べるようになっているようでした。今年は、台風がまだ一つも来ていないのでアジサシ類の営巣は順調です。
写真を撮ろうとしたのですが、親鳥の警戒がきついので断念しました。前回、観察した時は全く反応がなかったのですがヒナが巣から出ると警戒範囲が広がるようです。
When I first spotted it, it was perched on a nice branch — but I flushed it and it ended up here… ^^;
I never expected to find one right at the entrance to the forest road!!
先日見つけたエリグロアジサシのコロニー はほとんど巣立って飛び回っていましたが、ヒナは親鳥に餌をもらっているようでした。
昨日、同コロニーを訪れた時は、親鳥の警戒が強く撮影がはばかられたのですが、なぜか今日はこちらを全く気にしません。もしかしたら、昨日は飛べるようになったヒナが陸側にいたのかも。

There was also a Black-naped Tern with a flag.
A Black-naped Tern coming straight toward me. The autofocus on the 1D Mark II is quite impressive — it kept locking onto the Black-naped Tern even at high speed.
Occasionally one would pass directly overhead.
昨日の夕方、名護市内に水田地帯を発見したので、今日の昼過ぎに訪れてみましたところ、コアオアシシギやヒバリシギ、ムナグロ、タカブシギなどが入っていました。また、サギ類も数種類いました。
沖縄本島は田んぼが少ないので貴重なポイントになりそうです。^^ 冬場に水を張ってくれるといいなー。
8月19日追記： 沖縄本島の師匠の指摘により、コアオアシシギとヒバリシギの羽衣を訂正しました。なかなか羽衣を当てるのは難しいですが練習あるのみです。^^;

Adult Pacific Golden Plover in late summer plumage. There were several, but for some reason this flock was unusually wary.
名護市の取材帰りに、やんばるの林道を少し回ってきました。ノグチゲラとヤンバルクイナ、ホントウアカヒゲなどが確認できましたが、写真を撮らせてくれるのはホントウアカヒゲだけ…。^^;
ホントウアカヒゲは、換羽の真っ最中でこ汚い個体ばかりでした。
オオコノハズクの餌場の池に水が戻ってきていました。月末にでもパトロールに行ってきます。

Okinawa Robin, male. Probably hatched this year. The moult is well along and the plumage looks a bit rough.
Juvenile and immature Okinawa Robins seem curious about people — if you stay still, they will come within a metre of you.
高校時代の友人と昼飯を食った帰りにうるま市の田んぼと伊計島の畑を回ってきました。
田んぼには、ジシギが5羽ほどいました。水を張った田んぼには、セイタカシギやヒバリシギ、アオアシシギ、アカアシシギなどがポツポツといました。
伊計島の畑には、あちこちにツバメチドリがいました。全部で数十羽ほどでしょうか。
From the pattern of the tail feathers being preened, this looks like a Latham's Snipe, but apparently there are Common Snipe on Okinawa whose tail feathers resemble those of Latham's Snipe… ^^; And Latham's Snipe is said to be quite scarce on Okinawa Island, so perhaps it is a Common Snipe.

Oriental Pratincole. Rainfall has been low this year, so grasshoppers have erupted in large numbers in the sugarcane fields, and the pratincoles were catching them.
麦畑の落穂を拾いにミフウズラがやってきていました。スズメもたくさん集まり、中には白っぽいスズメが1羽交ざっていました。ミフウズラは最近よく見ますが、写真を撮ろうとすると草むらに隠れてしまいなかなか撮れせてくれません。^^;

This one goes straight into a dust bath after a water bath. It's going to end up covered in sand….
田んぼや三角池、佐敷の干潟などシギが少しずつ増えだしています。チュウシャクシギ、ジシギ、アオアシシギ、コアオアシシギ、ヒバリシギ、サルハマシギ、キアシシギなどなど。
チュウシャクシギはあちこちに現れだしています。サルハマシギは、個人的に今季初確認で、幼鳥は初見です。サルハマシギの幼鳥はとても珍しいようです。なんか見たことないなーと思って写真に残しておいてラッキーでした。^^
I thought it was a Dunlin, but it turned out to be a Buff-breasted Sandpiper in juvenile plumage. SHORE BIRDS IN JAPAN kindly pointed this out. I thought that distinctive buffy look was unusual and I'm glad I went ahead and photographed it. ^^

A Common Snipe probing along a paddy bund in search of food.
Black-crowned Night Herons have been showing up at Sankakuike in large numbers lately. Apparently there is a colony nearby, and some immatures are mixed in as well.
I don't see Cattle Egrets in large flocks here like I do on Ishigaki-jima.
今日は比較的涼しい一日でした。
うるま市の田んぼをシギチを求めて回ってきました。ジシギの識別を練習したかったのですが、1羽しかおらず。最初にジシギだと思ったやつはタマシギのオスだったり…。^^; タマシギは沖縄本島に来てから初見ですのでよかったかな。
ほかには、ヒバリシギ、タカブシギ、イソシギ、セイタカシギ、コチドリ、シロチドリなどがいました。
A male Greater Painted-snipe. So they really are on Okinawa Island too. ^^ It was alternating between hiding in the undergrowth and coming out onto the paddy berm to preen.
I thought it was a Common Snipe, but apparently it is more likely a Swinhoe's Snipe. The Snipe Master kindly pointed that out to me. It was pulling out earthworm after earthworm.
