Oriental Pratincole, Common Redshank and Other Waders in the Paddies

An Oriental Pratincole was resting in a paddy. I looked for a flock, but it seemed to be just a single bird in the middle of migration.

I found flocks of Common Redshanks in wintering mode at two locations.

The Oriental Pratincole I found soared up high and then came back down with what looked like a Tuberous Bush Cricket in its bill. Adult winter plumage.

Dunlin — 25 birds in total across two sites. For Ishigaki-jima, such numbers staying this long is relatively uncommon. The bird in the foreground is in first-winter plumage, and the one behind is an adult moulting from summer to winter plumage.

Four Heron Species Gather as Rice Harvesting Begins on Ishigaki

Rice harvesting has started in the paddies. On Ishigaki, a variety of wild birds gather to go after the insects, rats and other animals flushed out by the harvest.

Today a big gathering of herons was at a paddy not far from the town centre. Purple Heron, Eastern Cattle Egret, Little Egret, Great Egret and others kept arriving one after another. Sometimes Eastern Yellow Wagtails gather too. I asked the farmer first and he let me photograph.

Purple Heron

Purple Heron, adult. Among the herons gathering for the rice harvest, the Purple Heron was the most reserved — keeping its distance and waiting for insects to emerge. If a turtle shows up, only the Purple Heron can handle it.

Eastern Cattle Egret
Eastern Cattle Egret

The boldest of all is the Eastern Cattle Egret. It follows right behind the tractor.

Little Egret

Little Egrets also follow the tractor much like the Eastern Cattle Egrets, but they're not quite as bold. ^^;

Great Egret

The Great Egret does not chase the tractor; instead it waits for prey to flush on its own.

Grey-streaked Flycatcher, Amur Stonechat, Red Collared Dove, Red-throated Pipit on Farmland

An Amur Stonechat had arrived in a paddy. There seem to be two, but they are very wary and I could only photograph one.

Some Grey-streaked Flycatchers are still around too. That day I saw two at the same spot.

Red Collared Doves began to increase around mid-October, and now about ten can be seen in several paddies on Ishigaki.

In Yaeyama, the Amur Stonechat is a rarer bird than the Red Collared Dove. ^^

A flock of Red-throated Pipits came into the same paddy. Judging by the calls, all of the dozen or so birds seem to be Red-throated Pipits.

Same individual as above. It perched on the grass along the bund and occasionally dropped to the ground to catch prey.

A male Pale-backed Pigeon. This is probably the same bird that has been here for the past few days. This time it was perched on a power line, but now that harvested paddies are appearing I expect it will be easier to photograph going forward.

Red-throated Pipits seem to be cycling through the paddies across the area, with fresh flocks coming and going one after another.

I spotted a shadow rustling about in the grass. I waited to see what it was, and out came a Scaly-breasted Munia. ^^;

A Second Black-headed Bunting, and a Rosy Starling Going to Roost

Following the Black-headed Bunting from the other day, I found another Black-headed Bunting. I was looking at Red Collared Doves through binoculars when I heard an unusual call. When I searched carefully, it was actually the second Black-headed Bunting of the season!!

It had been startled by something and perched on a wire, and it let me photograph it. I forgot to photograph the Red Collared Doves that were with it. ^^;

The Rosy Starling is the same as the bird from the other day. It was eating mulberries and the like, but it disappears from view, covered by leaves. It's dull, but I photographed it perched on a wire.

In the evening paddies I also met a Purple Heron swallowing a large turtle and a Crested Serpent Eagle going after crabs living on the paddy banks.

Another Pheasant-tailed Jacana Found!!

Maybe this is a good year for Pheasant-tailed Jacanas; this is the fourth bird. Counting those my friend has confirmed, seven were seen in October alone. All appear to be juveniles.

The shorebirds also seem to be turning over less, and the birds in wintering mode can be watched calmly. In the paddies there are scattered Common Redshanks, Marsh Sandpipers, Common Greenshanks, Wood Sandpipers, Black-winged Stilts, Common Snipes, Dunlins, Long-toed Stints and others.
