稲刈りが始まると集合する石垣島のサギの仲間4種
田んぼで稲刈りが始まりました。稲刈りに驚いて出てくる虫やネズミなどを狙って石垣島ではさまざまな野鳥が集まります。
今日は、市街地から程近い田んぼでサギの仲間が大集合。ムラサキサギ、アマサギ、コサギ、チュウダイサギなどが次々と集まっていました。ツメナガセキレイたちが集まる場合もあります。農家に一声かけて撮影させてもらいました。
Purple Heron, adult. Among the herons gathering for the rice harvest, the Purple Heron was the most reserved — keeping its distance and waiting for insects to emerge. If a turtle shows up, only the Purple Heron can handle it.
The boldest of all is the Eastern Cattle Egret. It follows right behind the tractor.
Little Egrets also follow the tractor much like the Eastern Cattle Egrets, but they're not quite as bold. ^^;
The Great Egret does not chase the tractor; instead it waits for prey to flush on its own.
