We'll drive you around Ishigaki Island to wherever the birds are showing best that day. Observation is mostly from inside the vehicle, and we keep it to a maximum of 3 guests so everyone can take their time.
2日ほど前に見たカンムリワシ幼鳥の撮影ができました。 昨年に引き続き ことしも一番に姿を見せてくれました。^^
First juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle of the season. It was in much the same spot as last year's juvenile.
It was hunting in response to the sound of frogs calling.
台風後も秋の渡りは順調に続いており、大浜海岸にはチュウシャクシギが30羽以上の群れでいました。1羽はフラッグをつけていました。ニュージーランド北島で装着されたと思われる個体です。その他、ソリハシシギやムナグロ、メダイチドリなどシギチがたくさんいました。
8月13日に今季初だったツメナガセキレイもかなり増え、そこらじゅうの芝生や田んぼにいます。シマアカモズも一気に増えました。その代わり、アカショウビンは渡りが進んでいるようで今日は1羽の姿もみませんでした。

今季2羽目となるカンムリワシ幼鳥が川平にいました。キシノウエトカゲを2匹捕まえて満足げでした。^^
昨年は、ここのカンムリワシは 3羽目の確認 でした。毎年、同じような順番でどの幼鳥も同じような場所に出てきます。
It caught a large Kishinoue's giant skink twice, but both times it was too close and I couldn't get a clear shot past the obstacles. This photo shows the bird after failing a third attempt, looking around curiously.
An adult Crested Serpent Eagle perched several tens of metres from the juvenile above. Whether they are parent and child is unknown.
The usual Crested Serpent Eagle on the Dakada forest road. Today there were no Ruddy Kingfishers to be found along the road.
あすは白露です。きょうの夕方、浦田原を通るとバンナ岳の頂上付近から何やら大きめの鳥の群れがこちらへ向かってきます。双眼鏡で覗いてみるとアマサギ数百羽の大きな群れでした。コサギやチュウダイサギなども少し交ざっているようでした。
8月下旬から増えつつあるサギの仲間ですが、ここへきてどっと数を増やしたようです。
It had come down to rest in the rice fields, then flushed suddenly when startled by a passing walker.

After circling several times it came down at Uratabaru.
The large flocks merged into one, and the sight of several hundred birds wheeling together was breathtaking.

大里地区と裏田原の田んぼでシギチ観察。ツバメチドリやホウロクシギ、コチドリなどがいました。ジシギはチュウジシギだと思われます。
While watching shorebirds in the rice fields, an Oriental Pratincole came plunging down. It drank for a while, then took off again.
Three Far Eastern Curlews were resting in the rice fields. This seems to be a roost — they come in towards evening.
There were also snipe. Probably Swinhoe's Snipe, but I couldn't get conclusive evidence…
The Little Ringed Plovers were in a flock of a dozen or so.
川平のカンムリワシ幼鳥はきょうもお気に入りの御嶽の木に止まっていました。
It seems to be finding food — the crop is visibly bulging.
昨年の同じ頃にヤツガシラを見た場所に探しに行きましたが空振り…しましたが、帰り道に於茂登岳登山口の広場や嵩田林道、川平石崎、崎枝半島でそれぞれイワミセキレイを撮影、観察できました。1日で4羽も見たのは初めてです。^^
嵩田林道ではアカショウビンが2羽いました。

This Forest Wagtail was at Kabira Ishizaki. A confiding individual.

It caught a large caterpillar.
It caught a grasshopper or something similar. The Forest Wagtail was walking along the edge of the trail, swinging its body from side to side, picking up small insects one after another.
佐賀県にあるラムサール条約湿地の「東よか干潟」に行ってきました。鳥屋の間では、「大授搦(だいじゅがらみ)」と呼ぶそうです。シチメンソウの紅葉には少し早かったですが、午前の大潮満潮に当たり、狭くなった干潟に飛来、密集するヘラシギ、ホウロクシギ、ダイシャクシギ、ダイゼン、ハマシギ、メダイチドリなどシギチの姿が観察できました。
すばらしい干潟でしたので、春の渡りの時期にもう一度足を運んでみたいですね。^^
There was a single Spoon-billed Sandpiper among a large roosting flock of shorebirds. I had to scan for ages with binoculars before finally finding it. ^^ When I checked at home later, I found that this Spoon-billed Sandpiper had been first recorded three days earlier on September 12th. Good timing. ^^
It was very distant, so heavy cropping. ^^ ;
Only small flocks come to Ishigaki Island, but at Higashiyoka tidal flat there were thousands of Dunlins flocking together.
Whimbrels were also resting in a group of a dozen or so.
Eurasian Curlews were there too, in a group of a few birds. On the right is a Whimbrel.
There was just one Bar-tailed Godwit, standing there alone.
Dunlins were the most numerous.
It was an impressive sight — Great Knots, Dunlins, Grey Plovers and others all taking off at once with a thunderous rush of wings.

Because it was high tide, small birds like Dunlins and Lesser Sand Plovers would touch down and then take off again, the water too deep for them.

Whimbrel landing. Large waders in flight are hard to photograph on Ishigaki Island, but with so many birds here it was easy. ^^
There were plenty of Eurasian Magpies within Saga city, but I had a hard time finding one that wasn't perched on a power line. ^^;
昨日17日まで九州へ行っていたので、本日からアカハラダカの渡りの観察開始です。仕事前や仕事の合間になるべく見に行こうと思います。^^
初日は、70羽ほどが飛びました。本番は20日過ぎです。きょうは天気もよく、北寄りの風が吹いて絶好のコンディションでしたがそれゆえに群れは遠く高く飛び写真は全て超トリミングです…。^^;
アカハラダカの観察後、川平石崎に行ったらアカショウビンがいました。この時期にしては比較的きれいな個体でした。

A juvenile crosses in front of me, keeping an eye on me as it goes.
This one was also a male.
A flock of about 30 birds was circling high overhead, but they were in the clouds.
This flock wasn't obscured by cloud, but it was a small group.
Barn Swallows were also gliding high in the sky.
There was a Ruddy Kingfisher at Kabira Ishizaki. It may be getting close to the time it heads off on migration.
明日、20日は彼岸の入りです。ここ石垣島でも朝晩は涼しくなっていますが、昼間は30度を超える夏日です。
昨日に引き続き、きょうもアカハラダカの渡りの観察にバンナスカイラインの渡り鳥観察所(通称カンムリワシの卵)に行きましたが、数十羽しか確認できませんでした。
また、エゾビタキやクロハラアジサシも増えてきました。

Grey-streaked Flycatchers have been increasing along the Takada forest road. I tried shooting handheld at 1200mm with a 2× extender on the 600mm. ^^
It's remarkable that the Grey-streaked Flycatcher migrates all the way from its breeding grounds in Siberia to the Philippines and New Guinea — in such a tiny body.
A White-winged Tern was bathing in a rice paddy.
While watching the Chinese Sparrowhawks, a juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle was also gliding at quite a high altitude. Some individuals are already independent from their parents this early.
天気は良かったのですが、アカハラダカは飛びませんでした。^^; 8時から9時15分の間にたったの4羽…。昨日あたりからチゴハヤブサが渡り鳥観測所の周りをうろついています。

The Eurasian Hobby comes to the migratory bird observatory. It was chasing a banded hornet.
Also a juvenile. I'd love to get a close shot of a beautiful adult male Chinese Sparrowhawk.
野底岳林道にはチゴハヤブサ2羽とアカハラダカ1羽、カンムリワシ2羽がいました。23日の朝は野底岳の展望台でアカハラダカを観察してみます。だれも行かないので出るのか分かりませんが…。^^;
バンナスカイラインでは、サンショウクイが40羽ほどの群れでいました。毎年、アカハラダカの渡りが始まるとサンショウクイも多く見られます。
また、今朝の渡り鳥観察所のアカハラダカは7羽しか出なかったそうです…。^^;
The Ashy Minivet — the non-Ryukyu one — was moving through the trees in a medium-sized flock, foraging.
I confirmed the third Crested Serpent Eagle juvenile of the season. It was fairly wary.
There were also two Crested Serpent Eagles along the Nosoko forest road. Juveniles are usually seen there in a normal year, but not yet this season.
林道をまわりつつ、途中、大浜海岸や近くの田んぼなどを回りました。ヒバリシギはどこの田んぼにも大量にいます。次に多いのがタカブシギ、セイタカシギの順番でしょうか。海岸には圧倒的にキョウジョシギが多く、ついでキアシシギ、ソリハシシギです。ムナグロは田んぼにも海岸にも芝生にもいるのでトータルでは一番多いですね。シマアジと思われるカモもいましたが、パソコンで拡大してみるとコガモのようです。
There was one Marsh Sandpiper. It was a friendly bird that didn't flush even when people walked along the paddy bank.
A Common Greenshank. Compared to the Marsh Sandpiper above, the body is larger and the bill noticeably thicker.
Long-toed Stints are present in large numbers in every rice paddy.
There were two Whimbrels.
Ruddy Turnstones were the most numerous on the shore. Pacific Golden Plovers were also plentiful.
There are also good numbers of Greater Sand Plovers.
There was one Eurasian Teal at the reservoir.
今季4羽目のカンムリワシの幼鳥がいました。数十メートル離れて親鳥もいました。比較的警戒心の薄い幼鳥です。師匠に電話で連絡したのですが、その後しばらくして森の方へ飛び立ってしまいました。
アカハラダカの渡りは300羽ほど観察されたようです。私は、仕事で行けず…。今夜から、伊野田キャンプ場で1泊キャンプなので、明朝は野底林道の展望台から観察してみます。初なので出るか出ないかは不明。^^;
The fourth Crested Serpent Eagle juvenile of the season was calling, begging its parent for food.
昨年も野底林道で同じような時季に同じ場所で遅めのアカショウビンを観察しました。幼鳥も1羽いましたが、警戒心が強く撮影には至りませんでした。^^;
The Nosoko forest road has a reputation for Ruddy Kingfishers even in winter, but I haven't seen one there since October. Are they really around?
秋分の23日は雲ひとつなく晴れ上がりました。前日から伊野田キャンプ場でキャンプをしていたので、野底林道にある展望台からアカハラダカの渡りを観察してきました。
午前8時ごろから観察し始め、しばらくするとかなり高いところ(双眼鏡でやっと見えるぐらい)を数羽が南へ飛び去るのが見えました。バンナスカイラインの渡り鳥観察所でアカハラダカを見ている師匠に電話をしてみると野底と同じくかなりの高度を渡っていくとのこと。
午前10時前まで観察してアカハラダカ100羽、チゴハヤブサ2羽、ツミ2羽を確認しましたが、かなりの数のアカハラダカは見逃していると思われます。宮古島も同じような状況だったようです。天気が良すぎるのも考えものです。^^;

The only bird that flew close enough for me to make out its expression was the Japanese Sparrowhawk.
ジシギを平田原で撮影していると視界の端になにやらちょこまか動くのが。この動きはとファインダーから目を離すとアカエリヒレアシシギが目の前にいました。^^ 田んぼをちょこまか泳ぎながら採餌していましたが、知らないうちにどこかへ移動したようです。
ジシギも識別しようと尾羽が撮れるまで頑張ったのですが、いまいち消化不良。

Oh, it flew!! Those tail feathers — Great Snipe!!… but apparently it's a Swinhoe's Snipe. I was told on Twitter that there are Swinhoe's Snipe in Okinawa with tail feathers that look like Great Snipe.

アカハラダカの渡りも終わってしまったようです。ことしは天気が良すぎて、観察が難しい日が続きました。宮古野鳥の会のカウントも過去2番目の少なさだったようです。近くに来たのは幼鳥2羽だけでした。^^;
Finally, a juvenile Chinese Sparrowhawk passed overhead.
It circled right overhead once for me.

仕事の移動中に白水の田んぼに寄ってみると、チュウヒの幼鳥(メス?)がひらひらと飛んでいました。石垣島では3年ぶりのチュウヒの飛来です。^^
餌探しに一生懸命でこちらを向いてくれたのは一瞬だけ…。^^; 比較的警戒心が薄い個体のようなので、このまま越冬してくれればうれしいなー。
平田原の田んぼには、アカガシラサギ成鳥の冬羽が入っていました。
石垣市図書館など、市街地のあちこちのガジュマルやアコウの街路樹にコムクドリとギンムクドリの群れがたくさん入っていました。
Having only ever looked at Crested Serpent Eagles, the Eastern Marsh Harrier felt about a size bigger. As it soared leisurely over the paddies, the shorebirds and sparrows scattered in a panic. ^^;
The Eastern Marsh Harrier turned to face me for just a moment.
In the evening there was a Chinese Pond Heron.
