6月22日に日本初記録として石垣島に現れたギンカモメ は元気に滞在中です。

アカショウビン子育て中(動画あり)
リュウキュウアカショウビンが腰の高さぐらいの位置に営巣しています。巣立ちは2〜3日後の予定です。
久しぶりにブラインドに入っての長時間観察。いい風が吹き抜けて気温は気になりませんでしたが、すごい量の蚊の襲撃に遭いました…。^^;
知り合いの田んぼでの営巣なのでブラインド張りっぱなしで帰ってきたけど、雨降らないよね? ^^;
今季のアカショウビンの営巣は9カ所を観察中。すでに巣立ったところもあれば、ヘビに全滅させられた巣など悲喜交交。

The male caught a Large Brown Cicada that had landed on the blind and carried it to the chick. The blind suddenly lurched with a loud thud and gave me a start… ^^; The blind is tough going, but it kills your presence, and it's fun when all sorts of creatures besides birds show up. ^^

Raising chicks in a Formosan subterranean termite mound that is practically at ground level. There appear to be about four chicks. When a parent brought food to the nest, sometimes three beaks were visible simultaneously.
This one is incubating in a spot with absolutely no cover — you can see the tip of the bill. I hope it escapes any crow attacks.

ツバメチドリ子育て中(動画あり)
沖縄本島では何度か見たことがありますが、石垣島でこの数の集団営巣は初めて見ました。ヒナだけで十数羽。まだ抱卵中のツバメチドリもいました。
ムラサキサギがコロニー上空を飛ぶとツバメチドリのスクランブルが発動し、ムラサギサギを慌てさせていました。カラスはコロニー上空を避けて飛んでおり、ツバメチドリが制空権をしっかり握って上空を統制していました。^^

Once they've grown to about this size, they can fly a little.
The skies were surprisingly clear for the rainy season, ground temperatures rose, and the Oriental Pratincoles looked like they were struggling with the heat.

アカショウビン巣立ち、順調なツミとズグロミゾゴイの子育て
先日巣立った近所のリュウキュウアカショウビンのヒナがあっという間に成長しています。すでに自由自在に飛び回る術を身に付けたようです。狩りはまだできないようで、親鳥からムカデやクマゼミ などの給餌を受けていました。
ズグロミゾゴイのヒナは大きく成長して、綿毛も少なくなってきています。孵化後18日程度でしょうか。綿毛がほとんどなくなったころに巣立ちます。
リュウキュウツミもヒナが大きく成長し、メス親は巣には全く入らなくなりました。ヒナが枝渡りしだすには、あと10日程度でしょう。

There are two Malayan Night Heron chicks. They should fledge in another two weeks or so.

オオメダイチドリ、ハシブトアジサシ、トウネンなど
オオメダイチドリ、トウネンが到着しました。これからパラパラと動き出しますね。
2羽いたハシブトアジサシは夏羽のほうがいなくなり、冬羽の個体が残っていました。
エリグロアジサシは抱卵中です。台風がくると全滅するので、1カ月ほどはこないことを祈ります。冬羽のコアジサシがいました。ずいぶん早い換羽です。
チュウシャクシギも数羽が滞在中。ほかにはキョウジョシギやキアシシギ、シロチドリなどがいました。

This individual appeared to have an injury to its right foot.

The Lesser Crested Terns were running to catch crabs, just like the Greater Sand Plovers.

It flew fairly close.
